The clinical course of 59 patients who underwent valvotomy for aortic stenosis before 1968 was reviewed. All were older than 1 year at the time of operation. Mean follow-up period was 17.7 years. The authors report long-term results of a cohort of patients who underwent valve replacement with a Carbomedics bileaflet mechanical prosthesis. The influence of patient age on the results was examined. Three hundred and ninety patients were operated between 1988 and 2000. Complete follow-up was available in 98.5% of cases. BACKGROUND: The rarity of sinonasal tumors has precluded long-term follow-up of large series of craniofacial resections until now.
METHODS: A series of 209 patients suffering from a wide range of histologies who had undergone craniofacial resection for sinonasal neoplasia with up to 17 years' follow-up were analyzed.
RESULTS: An overall actuarial survival of 51% at 5 years and 41% at 10 years was found for the cohort as a whole. For malignant tumors, the 5-year actuarial survival was 44%, falling to 32% at 10 years. For benign pathology, the actuarial survival was 75% at both 5 and 10 years.

BACKGROUND: Partial plication annuloplasty is the main technique for congenital mitral insufficiency because this technique allows the mitral anulus to grow, in contrast to ring annuloplasty. However, this technique is not satisfactory for mitral insufficiency with some anomalies of the mitral valve apparatus.
METHODS: Forty-one patients underwent partial plication annuloplasty for mitral regurgitation from July 1979 to December 1998. Mitral regurgitation associated with an atrioventricular defect, an atrioventricular discordance, and a univentricular heart was excluded from this study.

During a ten-year period from 1965 through 1974, 164 patients with T2N0M0 glottic cancer were seen at the Princess Margaret Hospital. These patients were treated by radiotherapy reserving surgery for salvage of recurrent or persistent disease. From 1978 to 1988, we performed 110 laparotomies for hepatic metastases. With 41 resections for colorectal metastases, the survival was 34% at 3 years. The operative mortality was 7%. With 25 resections for non colorectal liver metastases, the survival was 42% at 1 year, 12% at 3 years. The results, compared with those of literature justify, in the absence of any other potential curative treatment, to remove colorectal liver metastases. For metastases from other tumours, results of resection for endocrine tumours and few sarcomas invite us to an aggressive approach.

Six hundred and seventy-one operations to insert or revise simple, linear cerebrospinal fluid shunts were performed in a single institution from 1976 through 1989.
