Multi-type childhood abuse, strategies of coping, and psychological adaptations in young adults.

AIM: To retrospectively analyze the rate of multi-type abuse in childhood and the effects of childhood abuse and type of coping strategies on the psychological adaptation of young adults in a sample form the student population of the University of Mostar. METHODS: The study was conducted on a convenience sample of 233 students from the University of Mostar (196 female and 37 male), with a median age of 20 (interquartile range, 2). Exposure to abuse was determined using the Child Maltreatment Scales for Adults, which assesses emotional, physical, and sexual abuse, neglect, and witnessing famil

Cultural adaptation of a brief psychological intervention for PTSD in severe mental illness: a Botswana context.

High rates of trauma exposure among patients with severe mental illness (SMI) in Botswana highlight the need for appropriate interventions. Culturally adapted interventions have been reported to be more acceptable, effective and feasible. This study aimed to culturally adapt the Brief Relaxation, Education and Trauma Healing (BREATHE), a brief psychological intervention to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among people with SMI in Botswana. The cultural adaptation process followed the steps outlined by previous research. They included a community assessment to identify needs, selecti

Adaptation to Preceding Acute Psychological Stress is Associated With Subsequent Stress Coping Levels via Corticoid Receptors.

OBJECTIVE: Hypothalamic‒pituitary‒adrenal axis response is essential for coping with acute stressors, while maladaptive stress coping may increase the risk of major depressive disorder. We previously demonstrated that behavioral patterns induced by prior psychological stress predict coping levels in response to future stressors. This study investigated whether activating corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) and corticosteroid receptors mediates psychological stress-induced coping behavior. METHODS: Behavioral responses in mice exhibiting a fear response elicited by exposure to 2,5-dihydro-2,

Meaning-making while staying connected matters in psychological adaptation during pandemic: a longitudinal moderated mediation study.

Adversity may bring about both negative and positive changes in psychological adaptation. Although there is mounting evidence regarding the psychological distress during the pandemic, the other side of posttraumatic change, posttraumatic growth (PTG) and its predictors are relatively underexamined. Moreover, there is a paucity of longitudinal investigations that examined intra- and interpersonal predictors responsible for both sides of psychological adaptation. Therefore, this study comprehensively examined the longitudinal relationship among cognitive processing, social support, and adaptatio

Does a community-based stress management intervention affect psychological adaptation among underserved black breast cancer survivors?

BACKGROUND: In this randomized trial, Project CARE, we examined whether participation in a cognitive-behavioral stress management and breast cancer wellness and education program improved psychological outcomes among a sample of underserved black breast cancer survivors. METHODS: Both complementary medicine interventions were 10-sessions, manualized, group-based, and were culturally adapted for black women in the community from evidence-based interventions. Participants were 114 black women (mean age = 51.1, 27-77 years) who had completed breast cancer treatment 0-12 months before enrollment

Adaptive signal theory: an integrative evolutionary, ecological, and intergenerational framework for psychological distress.

Despite substantial increases in pharmacological and psychotherapeutic treatment availability, global rates of psychological distress continue to rise, a pattern existing frameworks, taken individually, cannot fully explain. Current dominant models frequently conceptualize distress primarily as neurochemical dysfunction, emphasizing symptom reduction while leaving broader neurobiological signaling processes insufficiently addressed. For a clinically significant subset of individuals, this contributes to recurring symptom patterns, escalating treatment requirements, and eventual treatment resis

Expatriate Nurses' Experiences of Psychological Safety and Cultural Adaptation in Saudi Arabian Hospitals: A Qualitative Interview Study.

AIM: To explore how organisational support systems shape psychological safety and cultural adaptation among expatriate nurses working in Saudi Arabian hospitals. BACKGROUND: Expatriate nurses make up a substantial share of the nursing workforce in Gulf health systems, and their integration is a recurring nurse management concern. Psychological safety, the shared belief that a team is safe for interpersonal risk-taking, is a plausible but underexamined organisational mechanism linking management practice to expatriate nurse adaptation, voice and retention. METHODS: Qualitative interview study

Nurses' experiences of change fatigue during healthcare reforms: a qualitative study of psychological distress, impacts, and adaptation.

BACKGROUND: Global healthcare systems are undergoing continuous and rapid transformations aimed at improving service quality and efficiency. As frontline care providers, clinical nurses are directly exposed to frequent organizational changes. Change fatigue has emerged as a significant concern. However, most existing studies have employed quantitative approaches, offering limited insight into nurses' subjective experiences of this phenomenon. This qualitative study, therefore, seeks to explore clinical nurses' lived experiences of change fatigue and the coping strategies they adopt in response

Content validation and cultural adaptation are necessary to interpret evidence from psychological assessment instruments imported across cultures.

The cross-cultural use of psychological assessment instruments-especially those developed in one cultural context and applied in another-raises critical concerns about content validity and the potential for misleading interpretations drawn from measures derived from those instruments. This article argues that without rigorous cultural adaptation and content validation, psychometric indices and interpretations derived from imported instruments used in cross-cultural assessment may be biased and thus misleading. We first clarify the multidimensional and continuous nature of culture and review ps

Analysis of psychological and social factors affecting climate change adaptation and mitigation behaviors among Iranian rice farmers.

Rice is a vital staple crop, feeding billions globally. However, conventional rice farming practices, especially traditional irrigation techniques, are significant contributors to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Flooded irrigation, in particular, creates anaerobic conditions that facilitate methane production-a GHG significantly more potent in terms of global warming potential compared to carbon dioxide. As a result, rice cultivation is a key driver of climate change (CC). Addressing these environmental challenges while maintaining sustainable productivity requires the adoption of climate-smar

Understanding the relationship between interpersonal trauma and disordered eating: An extension of the model of psychological adaptation.

OBJECTIVE: Interpersonal trauma is a nonspecific risk factor for disordered eating (DE). Studies have begun to examine mechanisms that explain the relationship; however, few have tested comprehensive theoretical models. The Model of Psychological Adaptation (McCann, Sakheim, & Abrahamson, 1988) posits that trauma exposure results in core schema disruptions that are associated with varying psychological response patterns, or psychological adaptations, that are also established predictors of DE, such as interpersonal and affective problems. The model has been successfully applied to symptoms of

A Latent Profile Analysis of Psychological Adaptation Among Caregivers of Children with Strabismus: A Cross-Sectional Study.

PURPOSE: The psychological well-being of caregivers profoundly influences the treatment efficacy, long-term visual rehabilitation, and overall family well-being of children with strabismus. However, the heterogeneity within this caregiver population has not been explored. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 409 caregivers. Latent profile analysis was performed based on levels of depression symptoms, resilience, and social support to classify caregivers. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to identify the factors of profile membership. RESULTS: Three

Reframing Rehabilitation Retention in Long-Term Conditions: A Theory-Informed Mini-Review of Psychological Adaptation and Engagement.

Rehabilitation in long-term conditions requires not only clinical capacity but also sustained patient engagement, yet retention is commonly reduced to crude completion metrics. This theory-informed conceptual mini-review used a purposive, non-systematic synthesis of literature identified from the authors' existing knowledge base, targeted PubMed/MEDLINE searches last updated on 9 August 2026, and backward reference checking; the final article cites 76 sources. Retention is reframed as six related phases comprising referral and eligibility, uptake or initiation, early attendance, ongoing attend

Psychological resilience and psychosocial adaptation in type 2 diabetes mellitus: Associations with executive functioning and clinical indicators.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has been associated with executive-function vulnerability, yet the role of psychological resilience in neuropsychological and psychosocial functioning remains unclear. This study examined whether resilience was associated with executive-function performance, clinical indicators, and psychosocial adaptation in adults with T2DM and healthy controls. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 206 adults (102 with T2DM and 104 healthy controls) after excluding individuals with low global cognitive screening scores. Resilience was assessed using the Co

Adaptive regulation over adversity: Noradrenergic scaling and psychological resources differentiate attentional performance.

BACKGROUND: Childhood adversity has been consistently associated with cognitive difficulties; however, marked heterogeneity in outcomes challenges deterministic models of risk. Emerging evidence suggests that current adaptive regulation may better explain cognitive and physiological functioning than adversity exposure alone. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether psychological risk-characterized by perceived stress, resilience, and protective factors-better predicts attentional performance and noradrenergic responsivity than childhood adversity exposure in individuals with high cumulative adversity.

Adaptation of an intervention for psychological distress in children and adolescents living in urban areas of Sweden - UNITE.

BACKGROUND: Sweden has faced an increase in community violence over the past few years. The integration of potentially scalable psychological interventions into mental health responses in affected communites can contribute to addressing the psychological consequences. The World Health Organization's Early Adolescence Skills for Emotions (EASE) was originally developed as a task-sharing, group-based intervention for low- and middle-income countries. To address urgent needs in a high-income context, EASE was pragmatically adapted into a shorter, low-intensity intervention named UNITE, suitable f

Adapting psychological interventions for people with severe and profound intellectual disabilities: A behavioural activation exemplar.

BACKGROUND: People with severe to profound intellectual disabilities experience similar or higher levels of depression than those with more mild intellectual disabilities. Yet, there is an absence of evidence about how to adapt existing psychological therapies for this population. METHOD: A behavioural activation intervention (BeatIt) for people with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities was adapted for people with severe to profound intellectual disabilities and depression. Key considerations include: (i) beginning with a more in-depth assessment process; (ii) including the person in se
