OBJECTIVE: We aimed to describe the feasibility of a prediction of adenoid hypertrophy by pediatricians for diagnostic accuracy of nasopharyngeal x-ray in a pediatric unit.
METHODS: Forty-six patients with a history of probable adenoid hypertrophy between January 2013 and August 2013 were included in the study. Participants were excluded from the study if they had previous adenoidectomy; anatomic anomaly in the nose, palate, or nasopharynx; and acute infection. Nasal endoscopy was performed and evaluated adenoid size (choanal obstruction ratio) in all patients by an otorhinolaryngologist who

Introduction Adenoid tissue is part of the first line of immunity of the upper aero-digestive tract. It is located in the postero-superior wall of the nasopharynx behind the choana. Adenoid hypertrophy, a common childhood disorder, significantly contributes to the pathogenesis of otitis media with effusion (OME), which is the leading cause of hearing impairment in young children. This condition can result in delayed speech, poor academic performance, and language development issues. Assessing the size of the adenoids and their correlation with OME is crucial, as undiagnosed cases can lead to c…

INTRODUCTION: Recurrent adenotonsillitis (AT) commonly affects children and may be associated with various complications. Infections are common etiology, and microbial profiles may vary widely in different cases. In this study, we evaluated the bacterial profile and antibiotic sensitivity of pathogens identified in tonsil and adenoid core cultures in children with recurrent AT.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional, observational study, culture and antibiotic sensitivity were performed from tonsil and adenoid core samples obtained after adenotonsillectomy of children (5 to 18 years) with recurrent

Adenoids and tonsils have gained interest as a new in vivo model to study local immune functions and virus reservoirs. Especially herpesviruses are interesting because their prevalence and persistence in local lymphoid tissue are incompletely known. Our aim was to study herpesvirus and common respiratory virus infections in nonacutely ill adenotonsillar surgery patients. Adenoid and/or palatine tonsil tissue and nasopharyngeal aspirate (NPA) samples were collected from elective adenoidectomy (n = 45) and adenotonsillectomy (n = 44) patients (median age: 5, range: 1-20). Real-time polymerase ch…

Foreign body in the nasal cavity is one of the most common paediatric otolaryngology emergencies and needs to be promptly addressed. The inc … should always be looked for as a site of impaction of hidden foreign objects. Presence of enlarged adenoids could be of help as it may prevent accidental lodgement of displaced foreign body in the airway, but might also result in difficulty in locating and retrieving the foreign body because it acts as an anchor-pad with its grooves and crevasses. This re …

CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study suggest that atypical bacteria may be involved not only in acute upper airway diseases but also in recurrent infections requiring adenoidectomy and/or tonsillectomy. Therefore, their identification, followed by an appropriate treatment, should be considered.
OBJECTIVE: Although viruses and group A beta-haemolytic streptococci (GABHS) represent the most frequent bacterial aetiological agents of paediatric upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs), chlamydia and Mycoplasma pneumoniae have also been found in acute tonsillopharyngitis. Nevertheless their re

The enlarged adenoid is a common disorder in children resulting in nasopharyngeal obstruction. Many authors suggest that increased nasal resistance to respiration may cause disturbances in the pulmonary ventilation and carry the risk of obstructive sleep apnoea and/or cardiopulmonary syndrome. This study comprised 30 children complaining of long-standing nasal obstruction due to enlarged adenoids. Adenoidectomy was performed and the arterial blood gases were measured before and one month after surgery. Twelve normal children were also included as controls. Statistical evaluation of the results…

INTRODUCTION: Adenoid hypertrophy is the main cause of obstructive sleep apnea in children. Previous studies have suggested that pathogenic infections and local immune system disorders in the adenoids are associated with adenoid hypertrophy. The abnormalities in the number and function of various lymphocyte subsets in the adenoids may play a role in this association. However, changes in the proportion of lymphocyte subsets in hypertrophic adenoids remain unclear.
METHODS: To identify patterns of lymphocyte subsets in hypertrophic adenoids, we used multicolor flow cytometry to analyze the lymp…

OBJECTIVE: We designed a method to compare the adenoid-choanae area ratio (A/C ratio) measured in children with symptoms of adenoid hypertrophy with those from children without any symptoms related to adenoid hypertrophy.
METHODS: A prospective analysis of A/C ratio of 42 patients undergoing adenoidectomy and tonsillectomy from January 2000 to September 2003 in a medical center was compared with 28 patients receiving treatment other than the above-mentioned procedures in the same period. We used 0 degrees telescope to take pictures of the nasopharynx under general anesthesia preoperatively. T

OBJECTIVES: To demonstrate the technique and efficacy of powered assisted adenoidectomy using nasal endoscopy.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between 2002 and 2003, forty children (age ranged from 3 to 17 years) with symptoms and signs suggestive of snoring and/or obstructive sleep apnea and choanal adenoids were randomly selected and distributed in two groups. Group A underwent transnasal endoscopic powered adenoidectomy (TEPA) and group B underwent curettage adenoidectomy (CA). Both groups underwent pre- and postoperative nasal endoscopy. Direct comparisons between the two groups were made with rega…

Tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy procedures are among the oldest surgical procedures still performed today. Tonsils and adenoids are part of Waldeyer's ring, the basic function of which is antibody formation. Because of their location at the portal of entry of many airborne and alimentary antigens, the tonsils and adenoids often have been considered as the first line of defense against respiratory infections. Indications for adenoidectomy or tonsillectomy are to date still controversial. The two main indications for tonsillectomy are upper airway obstruction due to tonsillar hypertrophy and rec…

The tonsils of 147 patients with chronic tonsillitis and the adenoids of 134 children with recurrent respiratory infections were cultured for fungal organisms and studied microscopically. A control group consisted of 68 healthy persons. Positive cultures were obtained in 64% of patients with chronic tonsillitis, in 21% of children treated with adenoidectomy, and in 69% of the control group. Candida albicans, Saccharomyces sp. and Aspergillus were the most common organisms. The histological investigations revealed no evidence of pathogenecity in these organisms. They were found in the tonsillar…

We investigated palatine tonsil and adenoid specimens excised from otorhinolaryngological patients in a leprosy-endemic region of Brazil. Fite-Faraco staining identified Mycobacterium spp. in 9 of 397 specimen blocks. Immunohistochemistry and molecular analysis confirmed the presence of Mycobacterium leprae, indicating that these organs can house M. leprae in persons inhabiting a leprosy-endemic region.
