Nanoparticle Reinforcement of Poly(diol citrate)-Based Coacervate Adhesives.

Tannic acid (TA)-based coacervate adhesives rely primarily on hydrogen-bonding interactions to maintain cohesion. However, these relatively weak hydrogen-bonds easily trigger cohesive failure in practical bonding applications, particularly under wet conditions. To address this limitation, a nanoparticle reinforcement strategy was employed in this study. A poly(diol citrate)-based coacervate adhesive (PN) was first synthesized via one-pot melt polycondensation of citric acid (CA), 1,8-octanediol (OD), and polyethylene glycol (PEG), followed by coupling with N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS). Subsequen…

Modular Design of Hydrogel Adhesives for Enhanced Tissue Healing.

Hydrogel adhesives exhibit significant potential in various biomedical fields such as wound hemostasis and healing. However, there is a lack of general strategies for preparing hydrogel adhesives that can be adapted to a variety of complex human environments, thus severely impeding their application. Herein, a modular design of hydrogel adhesive systems incorporating genetically engineered polypeptides is developed. In this system, hydrogel networks and protein coacervates are endowed with distinct functions. Each component plays a specific role, while they work synergistically to achieve a ba…

Adhesion Mechanism, Applications, and Challenges of Ocular Tissue Adhesives.

Corneal injury is prevalent in ophthalmology, with mild cases impacting vision and severe cases potentially resulting in permanent blindness. In clinical practice, standard treatments for corneal injury involve transplantation surgery combined with pharmacological therapy. However, surgical sutures exhibit several limitations, which can be overcome using tissue adhesives. With recent advances in biomedical materials, the use of ophthalmic tissue adhesives has expanded beyond wound closure, including tissue filling and drug delivery. Furthermore, the use of tissue adhesives has demonstrated pro…

Allergic contact dermatitis from ("hypoallergenic") adhesives containing D-limonene.

BACKGROUND: Besides being a potential component of (some species of) colophonium, D-limonene is also used as a tackifier in the production of adhesives. Hydroperoxides of limonene are well-known skin sensitizers. OBJECTIVES: To show that D-limonene may be present in colophonium-containing but also colophonium-free ("hypoallergenic") adhesives, and that patients suffering from allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) from both types of adhesives might display positive patch test reactions to limonene hydroperoxides in this regard. METHODS: Five patients with suspected ACD from adhesives were patch t…

[Evaluation of the Cytotoxicity of Commercially Available Nail Adhesives].

Nail tips are nail art materials that can be attached to the nail with adhesives. Recently, nail/finger injuries related to nail tips have been reported and one of the causes is considered to be the adhesives used for attaching nail tips. The components of nail adhesives are mostly cyanoacrylate, which is also used as an industrial instant adhesive. During curing, cyanoacrylate adhesives release formaldehyde through hydrolysis. When it is marketed as a nail adhesive, there is no regulation regarding its formaldehyde amount nor obligation to indicate its ingredients in Japan. Additionally, a bi…

Photocrosslinkable Gelatin/Tropoelastin Hydrogel Adhesives for Peripheral Nerve Repair.

Suturing peripheral nerve transections is the predominant therapeutic strategy for nerve repair. However, the use of sutures leads to scar tissue formation, hinders nerve regeneration, and prevents functional recovery. Fibrin-based adhesives have been widely used for nerve reconstruction, but their limited adhesive and mechanical strength and inability to promote nerve regeneration hamper their utility as a stand-alone intervention. To overcome these challenges, we engineered composite hydrogels that are neurosupportive and possess strong tissue adhesion. These composites were synthesized by p…

[Adjuvants in operative laryngology: corticosteroids, fibrin adhesives, Mitomycin C].

Medicinal adjuvants are often used in operative laryngology but their value is judged very differently. The scientific evidence is unsatisfactory for most of these substances. For corticosteroids it is proven that in pediatric intensive care they reduce stridor following extubation. Routine prophylactic use for intubation does not seem to be justified and methylprednisolone and dexamethasone are the preferred preparations. Fibrin adhesives are well tolerated and low in side-effects. The indications for their use should be primarily limited due to the cost factor. Their use in laryngology remai…

Tissue adhesives for traumatic lacerations in children and adults.

BACKGROUND: Tissue adhesives have been used for many years to close simple lacerations as an alternative to standard wound closure (sutures, staples, adhesive strips). They offer many potential advantages over standard wound closure, including ease of use, decrease in pain and time to apply, as well as not requiring a follow-up visit for removal. Many studies have compared tissue adhesives and standard wound closure to determine the cosmetic outcome as well as these other secondary outcomes in their respective study populations. However, due to the wide variation in study parameters, there are…

Hydrogel Adhesives for Gastrointestinal Perforation: Design Principles and Applications.

Gastrointestinal (GI) perforation, as an acute digestive condition, is difficult to heal spontaneously and requires prompt surgical intervention or bioactive adhesives to promote wound closure. Among various types of tissue adhesives, hydrogel adhesives have attracted tremendous attention and have been used in the clinic due to their atraumatic nature, good biocompatibility, and tunable physicochemical properties. Despite their promise, the bioadhesive applications with engineered hydrogels still face challenges in the wet and acidic gastric environment. This review outlines the mainstream des…

Stimuli-responsive piezoelectric orthodontic adhesives for smart biofilm control.

Biofilm accumulation on orthodontic appliances hinders oral hygiene, increasing risks of white spot lesions and other oral health issues. Here, we developed a piezoelectric adhesive containing silver-loaded barium titanate (BTO@Ag) nanoparticles that leveraged stimulus responsiveness to achieve controllable and sustained antimicrobial properties. The composite adhesive was synthesized, characterized, and evaluated for safety. An oscillatory device simulating oral movements and an ultrasonic generator mimicking ultrasonic toothbrushes were used to activate the piezoelectric properties of the mo

Bond Strength and Adhesion Mechanisms of Novel Bone Adhesives.

Bone adhesives offer distinct advantages over the use of screws to attached internal fixation plates (IFPs). As the chemical composition of bone is similar to dentine, it is possible that the types of monomers used to make dentine adhesives could be utilised to affix IFPs to bone. The ability to attach a bio-resorbable IFP to porcine bone was assessed for the monomer 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (MDP), used either as a homopolymer or a copolymer with urethane dimethacrylate (MDP + U). Additionally, the addition of a priming step (MDP + U + P) was evaluated. The chemical interac…

High-value utilization of hydroxymethylated lignin in polyurethane adhesives.

Lignin is a good candidate for the polymerization and chemical modification to prepare sustainable chemicals and materials, but a relatively low hydroxyl content becomes an obstacle for the preparation of lignin-based polyurethane (PU) adhesives. In order to improve its reactivity, the acetic acid lignin (AAL) was hydroxymethylated before copolymerized with isocyanate during the preparation of PU adhesives. The hydroxymethylation was carried out in an alkaline formaldehyde solution and it was found that 85 °C is the optimal temperature. On that condition, the free formaldehyde content of the c…

Hydroxymethylfurfural and its Derivatives: Potential Key Reactants in Adhesives.

5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a promising bio-derived platform chemical with a broad scope of application, for example, in the production of solvents, fuels, polymers, or adhesives. The wood and foundry industries are among the largest adhesive users and currently both rely to a large extent on the use of fossil-based binders, such as by using formaldehyde as a crosslinker in many commercial adhesive systems. The industry is thus looking for suitable alternatives to replace fossil-based chemicals. HMF and its derivatives are considered to be key renewable reactants in adhesive systems. The …

Bacterial Anti-adhesives: Inhibition of Staphylococcus aureus Nasal Colonization.

Bacterial adhesion to the skin and mucosa is often a fundamental and early step in host colonization, the establishment of bacterial infections, and pathology. This process is facilitated by adhesins on the surface of the bacterial cell that recognize host cell molecules. Interfering with bacterial host cell adhesion, so-called anti-adhesive therapeutics, offers promise for the development of novel approaches to control bacterial infections. In this review, we focus on the discovery of anti-adhesives targeting the high priority pathogen Staphylococcus aureus. This organism remains a major clin…
