[Chronic rhinitis--effect of topical administration of corticosteroids on eosinophilic leukocytes].

Clinical manifestation of chronic rhinitis is due to local release of mediators from inflammatory cells. Eosinophil leukocytes are important in pathogenesis of nasal hypersensitivity as well as nasal hyperreactivity [1, 2]. The aim of the study was to follow-up the effect of local corticosteroid treatment on a number of eosinophils in nasal secretion of patients with chronic rhinitis. The study was prospective and controlled. A total number of 88 subjects was included in the study. Patients with chronic rhinitis who were treated with local corticosteroids (63) constituted the experimental grou

[Change in corneal sensitivity after topical dorzolamide administration. A comparative study].

BACKGROUND: The new antiglaucoma drug, dorzolamide, mainly evokes local side effects like eye burning, pruritus, blurred sight and a foreign-body sensation. A clinical study was conducted to determine it dorzolamide has any influence on corneal sensitivity. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We examined three different groups of substances. We used sodium chloride solution 0.9% and the local anesthetic oxybuprocaine 0.4% as control groups, each in two subgroups aged 23-40 years or 60-86 years. Corneal sensitivity was measured in the corneal center with Draeger's electronic optic aesthesiometer. We took th

Experience with topical administration of 4-aminosalicylic acid in ulcerative colitis.

4-Aminosalicylic acid was applied topically in a daily dose of 1.4 gm for two weeks in ten patients with ulcerative colitis. After favorable results, the therapeutic effects of 4-aminosalicylic acid and salazopyrin enemas were compared in a two-week cross-over open trial, in 20 patients suffering from recurrent ulcerative colitis involving the rectum and rectosigmoid. No significant difference was found in the changes of the endoscopic picture of the mucosa. The results did not show a significant difference between 4-aminosalicylic acid and salazopyrin enemas, either in the clinical activity o

[New approaches in topical drug administration and treatment of the dry eye].

The collagen shield is a contact lens-shaped collagen matrix that can be impregnated with a drug during hydration or manufacture and then, when placed on the cornea, acts as a reservoir, dissolving slowly and releasing the drug over time. This new ocular drug delivery system has proven useful in the treatment of corneal infections and the prevention of graft rejection. The lubricating effect of the dissolving shield matrix may palliate dry eye symptoms, but the shields are not useful as a treatment for keratoconjunctivitis sicca because they must be applied in the physician's office and they a

Pharmacokinetics of Topical Administration of Altrenogest in Mares and Implications for Human Health.

Altrenogest is a synthetic progestogen widely used in equine reproductive management. Adverse effects to altrenogest have been reported in people with cutaneous exposure reported as the highest exposure pathway. Despite these reports, there has been no quantitative research to determine the capacity for altrenogest to be absorbed through skin. This study aimed to determine if cutaneous application of oral altrenogest results in systemic absorption in mares and to evaluate the influence of application site. A randomized, two-period, two-treatment crossover study was undertaken in eight mares. M

Associating chitosan and microemulsion as a topical vehicle for the administration of herbal medicines.

A viscous solution of low molecular weight chitosan (CH) at 5% w/v (10.2 kDa, 75 % deacetylated, 1451 cP at 25 °C) was associated with a microemulsion (ME) that undergoes a phase transition after water absorption in situ (≈28 % w/w), forming a more viscous liquid crystal, which was potentially evaluated as a topical vehicle. The ME was selected from a phase diagram, selecting a composition based on Tween® 80 (52 %), myristate isopropyl (28 %), and the aqueous phase (water and polyethylene glycol 400, 60:40 w/w) (20 %), which was after replaced by CH and herbal medicines (HM). Topical administration of orbital fat-derived stem cells promotes corneal tissue regeneration.

INTRODUCTION: Topical administration of eye drops is the major route for drug delivery to the cornea. Orbital fat-derived stem cells (OFSCs) possess an in vitro corneal epithelial differentiation capacity. Both the safety and immunomodulatory ability of systemic OFSC transplantation were demonstrated in our previous work. In this study, we investigated the safety, therapeutic effect, and mechanism(s) of topical OFSC administration in an extensive alkali-induced corneal wound. METHODS: Corneal injury was created by contact of a piece of 0.5 N NaOH-containing filter paper on the corneal surface

Topical mechlorethamine. Cutaneous changes in patients with mycosis fungoides after its administration.

Six patients with mycosis fungoides were treated with topical mechlorethamine hydrochloride for periods of two to four years. Clinical and histological studies for radiomimetic and radiodermatitis-like effects failed to demonstrate any abnormalities. The only observed changes were generalized hyperpigmentation of the skin and melanin-containing melanophages in the papillary dermis. We consider that the long-term use of topical mechlorethamine may be a safe form of therapy, but that a continuous indefinite follow-up of patients on this medication should be mandatory.

Symptomatic bradycardia associated with topical brimonidine gel (Mirvaso) administration: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Bradycardia can have a number of different aetiologies, including as a side effect of medications. Brimonidine is a rare, but recognized, cause of bradycardia. Brimonidine is indicated in the treatment of facial erythema in rosacea when given as topical brimonidine gel (Mirvaso). It may also be administered as eye drops for raised intraocular pressure in open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension. Brimonidine is an alpha-2 agonist, which if systemically absorbed can present with bradycardia, hypotension, and dizziness. The authors are unaware of any other case reports regarding to

Tuning lipid structure by bile salts: Hexosomes for topical administration of catechin.

The delivery of bio-active molecules through the skin is challenging given the complex structure of its outer layer, the stratum corneum. Here we explore the possibility to encapsulate natural compounds into nanocarriers containing permeation enhancers that can affect the fluidity of the stratum corneum lipids. This approach is expected to facilitate dermal or transdermal release. For this purpose, the application of bile salts, which are natural surfactants involved in vivo in lipid digestion, was exploited. Bile salts were added to lipid liquid crystalline nanoparticles (NPs) made of monoole

Topical administration of DPP-IV inhibitors prevents retinal neurodegeneration in experimental diabetes.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: The main aims of the present study were: (1) to assess the expression and content of dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP-IV) in human and db/db mouse retinas, and in human vitreous fluid; and (2) to determine whether the topical administration of the DPP-IV inhibitors (DPP-IVi) would prevent retinal neurodegeneration and vascular leakage in db/db mice by reducing endogenous glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) degradation. METHODS: To assess the expression and content of DPP-IV, human samples of vitreous fluid and retinas were obtained from participants with type 2 diabetes (n = 8) and a
