Father absence and adolescent development: a review of the literature.

Rapid social change has seen increasing numbers of woman-headed single-parent families, meaning that more and more children are growing up without a father resident in the home. Father absence is a term that is not well defined and much of the literature does not discriminate between father absence due to death, parental relationship discord or other causes. This article presents a critical review of the extant literature on father absence, particularly as it relates to adolescent well-being and development. Findings from the literature point to the importance of father presence in children's

Adolescent development and energy expenditure in females with cystic fibrosis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Poor nutrition and growth status are common in people with cystic fibrosis (CF), and females often have a worse clinical course. Relationships between sexual maturity, nutrition, resting energy expenditure (REE), and pulmonary status in females with CF and pancreatic insufficiency (PI) were evaluated. METHODS: Pre- and post-menarcheal females with CF and PI (8-29 yr) were compared to healthy females. Z-scores for growth and body composition, anthropometry and DEXA were assessed. REE was measured in all subjects and pulmonary function in CF. RESULTS: Compared to healthy f

[The adolescent breast--normal and abnormal development, diseases and tumors].

BACKGROUND: The possible problems of an adolescent breast include a large spectrum of phenomena such as changes which may cause aesthetic problems, infectious diseases and in rare cases, malignant tumors. Young adolescents and their mothers tend to consult with a gynecologist usually due to developmental abnormalities of the growing breast such as asymmetry of the breast, agenesis or hypoplasia of one breast. Cysts and tumors are usually worrisome and warrant attention and precise diagnosis. PURPOSE: The aim of this paper is to review the recent studies and data concerning breast diseases in

Adolescent development and the onset of drinking. A longitudinal study.

Junior and senior high-school students were studied over a 4-year period. The likelihood of drinking was directly related to the degree of transition- or problem-proneness, and a developmental relationship between onset of drinking and other socipsychological attributes was found. It is concluded that becoming a drinker is an integral aspect of the process of adolscent development.

Adolescents and youth in developing countries: Health and development issues in context.

Adolescence is a period of transition, marked by physical, psychological, and cognitive changes underpin by biological factors. Today's generation of young people - the largest in history - is approaching adulthood in a world vastly different from previous generations; AIDS, globalisation, urbanisation, electronic communication, migration, and economic challenges have radically transformed the landscape. Transition to productive and healthy adults is further shaped by societal context, including gender and socialisation process. With the evidence that young people are not as healthy as they se

The Diagnostic Accuracy of Delayed Development in Adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: The early identification of developmental delay in adolescents by health professionals is relevant for a good prognosis. However, the clinical indicators of development delay are unclear in nursing science. PURPOSE: To analyze the clinical indicators of delayed development in school adolescents. METHODS: A diagnostic accuracy study that investigated delayed development among 385 adolescents in public schools between July and September of 2017. The accuracy measures were analyzed using a latent class analysis based on sensitivity and specificity values. FINDINGS: The delayed de

Brain development in heavy-drinking adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: Heavy alcohol use during adolescence may alter the trajectory of normal brain development. The authors measured within-subject changes in regional brain morphometry over longer intervals and in larger samples of adolescents than previously reported and assessed differences between adolescents who remained nondrinkers and those who drank heavily during adolescence as well as differences between the sexes. METHOD: The authors examined gray and white matter volume trajectories in 134 adolescents, of whom 75 transitioned to heavy drinking and 59 remained light drinkers or nondrinkers o

Psychosexual development of children and adolescents with hypospadias.

INTRODUCTION: Hypospadias is the most common malformation of the penis. Despite the common assumption that hypospadias may affect children's psychosexual development, only a few studies report on the patients' psychosexual adjustment during childhood and adolescence. AIM: A comprehensive, cross-sectional investigation of the psychosexual development of boys operated on for hypospadias in comparison to a healthy control group. METHODS: Sixty-eight children and adolescents (7-17 years) operated on for hypospadias were examined by means of a standardized interview assessing penile self-percepti

Trajectories of Response Inhibition Development in Adolescence.

Adolescence is a pivotal developmental period during which cognitive control and the ability to suppress maladaptive impulses undergo profound refinement. Despite extensive behavioral and imaging studies in humans, the neural circuit mechanisms that drive the maturation of inhibitory control remain poorly understood. To address this gap, we performed a longitudinal multimodal study in macaque monkeys spanning the transition from puberty to adulthood, combining behavioral measurements, prefrontal neurophysiology, and structural neuroimaging within the same individuals. Behavioral performance in

Personality development of adolescents with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism.

Hypogonadotropic hypogonadism is a disorder of puberty characterized by absence of spontaneous sexual maturation. 8 male adolescents with this disorder, who were treated with pulsatile GnRH administration, were examined psychologically by means of standardized interviews. Problems were found in the development of independence (specifically relating to own body image and social functioning) and in identity development (particularly on personal characteristics).

Contextualizing the adolescent social brain: Links to social health using data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study.

Social health, defined as adequate quantity and quality of social relationships (Doyle & Link, 2024), is essential for human well-being. The social brain, a network of regions involved in social cognition, ostensibly facilitates social health; however, few studies assess how social brain function relates to different profiles of social health. We tested this association during early adolescence when close relationships with peers gain increased importance. We used baseline (8- to 11-years old) brain data and year 2 (10- to 13-years old) social health data from 5832 adolescents in the Adolescen

Assessment of adolescent body perception: development and characterization of a novel tool for morphing images of adolescent bodies.

We developed a computer-based method of distorting adolescent body images, which incorporates the covariation between body parts found during growth and sexual maturation. An adolescent body-shape database (AdoBSD) and adolescent body morphing tool (AdoBMT) are described; the AdoBSD comprises real (n=320) and morphed (n approximately 41,000) images (front and side view) of 160 adolescents (9-17 years). We used a point distribution model, based upon principal components analysis, to characterize the covariation between predefined body tag-points manually positioned on the body images and to mor

Use of aromatase inhibitors in children and adolescents with disorders of growth and adolescent development.

Although treatment of children and adolescents who have disorders of growth and adolescent development with aromatase inhibitors is increasingly common, data for or against their use are extremely limited. Precocious puberty, short stature, and gynecomastia are conditions for which inhibition of the enzyme aromatase might prove beneficial to reduce clinical signs of estrogenization and/or estrogen-mediated skeletal maturation. In this report, we summarize the published data regarding the use of aromatase inhibitors in these conditions, and review known and potential benefits, safety concerns, …

Characterizing delinquent behavior in early adolescence: Results from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development- Social Development study.

We examined associations among early delinquent behaviors and key personality traits, psychopathology, and environmental factors among youth enrolled in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development - Social Development (ABCD-SD) study, a substudy of the national ABCD study. Establishing these associations at baseline is an important step for identifying early risk factors for delinquent behavior. The ABCD-SD study includes annual assessments of delinquency, victimization, and personality features for participants from five sites (N = 2,426). We used all data from the ABCD-SD baseline assessment

Prenatal exposure to hypertensive disorders and adolescent brain white matter development.

BACKGROUND: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) are associated with altered in utero neurodevelopment, yet long-term impact on adolescent white matter architecture remains unclear, particularly by HDP subtype and sex. While preeclampsia/eclampsia (P/E) is clinically more severe, pregnancy-related hypertension (PR-HTN) may involve longer in-utero exposure to hemodynamic stress. This study examined how distinct HDP exposures influence longitudinal white matter measures in adolescents. METHODS: Using a longitudinal cohort with two MRI timepoints (baseline ages 9-11 years; 2-year follow-up

The Adolescent Microbiome-Gut-Brain Axis: Development, Mechanisms, and Translational Perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence represents a pivotal, yet understudied, developmental window in which maturation of the gut microbiome, neural circuits, endocrine systems, and behavioral processes converge. Although early-life microbiota-gut-brain interactions are well established, emerging evidence demonstrates that adolescence constitutes a "second sensitive period" during which microbial composition, metabolic output, and immune function undergo substantial restructuring. These microbial transitions parallel key neurodevelopmental events, including synaptic pruning, dopaminergic refinement, and hei

Aligning social media design with adolescent brain development: rationale and recommendations.

The human brain and its associated faculties develop in a non-linear, asynchronous way across childhood and adolescence. Current digital technology policies, especially those involving social media, have failed to adequately account for this in their design. To maximise efficacy and societal benefit, such policies must be biologically informed. Synthesising across existing neuroscientific evidence, we propose a developmentally staged framework for biologically informed social media design and regulation. If implemented, the resulting recommendations may help to safeguard young people during pa
