[Relationships between the value of combined PAH-inulin clearance, the kidney-cortex index as well as between additional radiographic findings in chronic pyelonephritis].

In 85 patients with ascertained chronic pyelonephritis the relations between the measured values of the combined PAH-inulin-clearance, the index of the adrenal cortex and other radiological findings were investigated. Here the determination of the cortex of the adrenal cortex resulted in a better correlation with the sizes clarification values than the calculation of the size of the kidney. By variance analysis (F-test) significant differences between the individual function groups became clear.

[Indications for study of adrenal function by measurement of the cortisol secretion rate].

Results of routine methods for measurements of plasma cortisol and his urinary metabolites have been comparated with those of cortisol secretion rate (CSR) measured by simple isotopic dilution; the latter appears for his specify and precision, to be the most suitable for an exact evaluation of cortisol production by the adrenals. In normal subjects CSR resulted slightly lower than those reported in the literature; in obese subjects CSR was slightly higher than in normals, also when it was related to the urinary creatinine. In the patients with Cushing's syndrome, CSR was considerably higher, w

Further analysis of the disturbed adrenocortical function in the cerebro-hepato-renal syndrome of Zellweger.

Plasma aldosterone, corticosterone, 11-deoxycorticosterone, progesterone, 17-hydroxyprogesterone, 11-desoxycortisol, cortisol and cortisone were determined simultaneously in small plasma samples obtained during an i.v. ACTH (Synacthen) stimulation test in five patients (age 4-7 years) with Zellweger syndrome. The response of all ACTH-dependent steroids to Synacthen was severely impaired in all patients, despite normal basal levels. It can be concluded that the biochemical defect in adrenal steroidogenesis causing the inadequate response to ACTH injection is located proximal to progesterone. We

A variant of adrenomyeloneuropathy with hypothalamic-pituitary dysfunction and neurologic remission after glucocorticoid replacement therapy.

Adrenomyeloneuropathy is a syndrome comprising spastic paraparesis, polyneuropathy, primary adrenocortical insufficiency and variable hypogonadism. We describe a 32 year old man who presented with contractures, peripheral neuropathy, primary adrenocortical insufficiency adn secondary hypogonadism. Abnormal responses of growth hormone, gonadotropins, prolactin and thyrotropin to provocative stimuli were found, without radiographic evidence of a pituitary or hypothalamic lesion. Almost complete recovery from the neurologic abnormalities occurred with glucocorticoid replacement therapy. The clini

Canine hyperadrenocorticism.

Hyperadrenocorticism is a common endocrinopathy which results from the excessive production of cortisol by the adrenal cortex. In the majority of cases, this increased secretion of cortisol results from stimulation of the adrenal cortex by adrenocorticotrophic hormone secreted from the pituitary gland. In a smaller number of cases adrenal tumours are present. Clinical signs are variable but commonly include polydipsia and polyuria, polyphagia, obesity, a pendulous abdomen, hepatomegaly, alopecia, lethargy, weakness and anoestrus. Haematology, serum chemistry analysis and urinalysis should be p

Adrenocortical insufficiency in smear positive pulmonary tuberculosis.

We studied 40 patients with pulmonary tuberculosis. All were positive for acid-fast bacilli (AFB) in the sputum. Their mean age was 30 yrs (range 10-50 yrs) and the duration of illness was 26.3 +/- 2.3 months. Radiologically minimal, moderately advanced and far advanced lesions were present in 7 (17.5%), 9 (22.5%) and 23 (57.5%) patients respectively. One patient with endobronchial lesion had no radiological evidence of pulmonary tuberculosis. Clinically, 14 patients (35%) had one or the other features of adrenocortical insufficiency. Postural hypotension was the commonest feature and was pres

Adrenal disorders in cats.

Although adrenal disorders are uncommon in cats, they are being recognized with increasing frequency. The low incidence and unique characteristics of adrenal disease in cats often make the diagnosis and treatment of these disorders challenging. This article summarizes information on the diagnosis and treatment of feline adrenal disorders, including hyperadrenocorticism, hypoadrenocorticism, pheochromocytoma, and hyperaldosteronism.

Adrenal gland function in a dog following unilateral complete adrenalectomy and contralateral partial adrenalectomy.

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 40.3-kg (88.7-lb) 6-year-old spayed female Labrador Retriever was evaluated because of acute unilateral epistaxis. CLINICAL FINDINGS: During the initial evaluation of the dog, systemic hypertension and a left adrenal gland mass were detected. The left adrenal gland mass was surgically removed; results of histologic examination of the mass indicated it was a pheochromocytoma. Ten months later, the dog was evaluated because of persistent systemic hypertension and development of polyuria, polydipsia, and excessive panting. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed a mass in the cran
