The scintigraphic localization of mineralocorticoid-producing adrenocortical carcinoma.

I-131-6 beta-iodomethylnorcholesterol (NP-59) was used to localize mineralocorticoid-secreting adrenocortical carcinomas in two patients and functioning metastases in a third patient studied after the removal of the primary tumor. The presence of sufficient NP-59 activity within these lesions for discernable imaging is unusual and would not have been expected based on previous experience with other functioning and nonfunctioning carcinomas of the adrenal cortex. These cases serve to illustrate the variable spectrum of iodocholesterol uptake into adrenocortical malignancies and suggest that sci

Sequence analysis, tissue distribution and regulation by cell depolarization, and second messengers of bovine secretogranin II (chromogranin C) mRNA.

Secretogranin II is a very acidic, tyrosine-sulfated protein found in secretory granules of cells belonging to the diffuse neuroendocrine system. It gained more general importance recently as a universal immunohistochemical marker for endocrine neoplasms. Sequence information was obtained from secretogranin II isolated from bovine anterior pituitaries, allowing the isolation of cDNA clones and deduction of its primary structure. Bovine secretogranin II is a 586-amino acid protein of 67,455 Da which is preceded by a signal peptide of 27 residues and contains 9 pairs of basic amino acids in its

Recurrent oncocytic adrenocortical carcinoma: implementing diagnostic criteria in a case report with the longest survival.

INTRODUCTION: Oncocytic adrenocortical tumors represent a subtype of the adrenal cortex neoplasms. These tumors can be divided into oncocytomas, oncocytic neoplasms of uncertain malignancy and carcinomas (OACs). To date, only 34 cases of OAC have been reported. CASE EXPERIENCE: We reported a case of a 54-year-old male patient with a history of laparoscopic right adrenalectomy for an OAC and subsequent chemotherapy for a recurrence. He was referred to our emergency room for diffuse abdominal pain, vomit, change in bowel habits, fever, asthenia. He underwent a laparotomy and a complete excision…

Insights Obtained from the Nontumorous Glandular Tissue in Patients with Endocrine Tumors.

The pathology of neoplasia tends to focus on the tumor that requires characterization, grading, and staging. However, nontumorous tissue surrounding the lesion can also provide information, particularly about pathogenetic mechanisms. In endocrine tissues, this takes the form of precursor lesions that characterize several genetic predisposition syndromes. In addition, because of the unique functional aspects of endocrine neoplasia, the nontumorous tissue provides evidence of hormone excess, with hyperplasia and/or atrophy and other involutional changes allowing the pathologist to confirm both h

Hydroxylamine effects on cryptogenic neoplasm development in C3H mice.

The effect of administration of hydroxylamine (HA) to male and female mice was studied because of reports suggesting an anticarcinogenic effect and an enhancement of lifespan. In this study, two C3H sublines were used: the C3H/HeN which carries a germinal provirus of the mouse mammary tumor virus and the C3H/HeJ(+) which also carries the milk-transmitted exogenous virus. Lifetime administration of 10 mM HA in the drinking water resulted in a decrease in mammary neoplasm incidence in female C3H/HeN mice, but not in female C3H/HeJ(+) mice. Ovarian neoplasms and cysts were common in all groups, i

Carcinoid tumors of the thymus and Cushing's syndrome: Clinicopathologic features and current best evidence regarding the cell of origin of these unusual neoplasms.

It is uncertain whether thymic neuroendocrine tumors (NET) associated with Cushing's syndrome (CS) produce corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) and adrenocorticotropin hormone (ACTH) and whether the thymus contains ACTH and/or CRH cells that could originate NET. The clinicopathologic features of 5 typical (TC) and 6 atypical carcinoids (ATC), 10 additional non-neoplastic thymi, 6 adrenal glands with bilateral nodular hyperplasia and 8 adrenal cortical adenomas were reviewed. Representative slides were immunostained for ACTH and CRH. Four (36.4%) of the 11 patients had CS. The incidence of Mas

From the radiologic pathology archives: precocious puberty: radiologic-pathologic correlation.

Precocious puberty represents a unique diagnostic problem in which imaging plays an important role. Development of secondary sex characteristics may result from inappropriate activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary axis with release of gonadotropin, or from gonadotropin-independent secretion of sex steroids by the adrenal glands or gonads. A variety of lesions can manifest with precocious puberty, including various central nervous system (CNS) lesions, adrenal lesions, and sex cord-stromal tumors of the testis or ovary. CNS lesions causing precocious puberty are much more common in boys than

Molecular tools for diagnosing diseases of the adrenal cortex.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The adrenal glands produce some of the most essential for life hormones, including cortisol and other steroids, and catecholamines. The former is produced from the adrenal cortex, whereas the latter is from the medulla. The two parts are anatomically and functionally distinct and it would be impossible in the context of one short article to cover all molecular updates on both the cortex and the medulla. Thus, in this review, we focus on the molecular tools available for diagnosing adrenocortical diseases, such as adrenal insufficiency, Cushing and Conn syndromes, and their p

Incidental Adrenal Masses: A Case Report of an Adrenal Oncocytoma.

A 59-year-old woman underwent an abdominal and pelvic computed tomography (CT) scan to rule out non-obstructive urolithiasis. The patient was asymptomatic, with the exception of occasional bilateral low back pain. A physical examination did not reveal any notable findings. The CT scan revealed the presence of an incidental solid left adrenal lesion, which displaced the body of the pancreas and the left kidney. The lesion measured 7 cm × 6.5 cm and exhibited a rounded morphology with well-defined margins. It showed progressive and heterogeneous contrast uptake. Additionally, magnetic resonance

The new histological system for the diagnosis of adrenocortical cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Adrenocortical cancer (ACC) is a rare malignant tumor that originates in the adrenal cortex. Despite extensive molecular-genetic, pathomorphological, and clinical research, assessing the malignant potential of adrenal neoplasms in clinical practice remains a daunting task in histological diagnosis. Although the Weiss score is the most prevalent method for diagnosing ACC, its limitations necessitate additional algorithms for specific histological variants. Unequal diagnostic value, subjectivity in evaluation, and interpretation challenges contribute to a gray zone where the reliab

[Multifactorial assessment of prognostic features of adrenocortical cancer].

OBJECTIVE: To determine the predictors of the aggressive course of adrenocortical cancer (ACC). ACC is a rare malignant neoplasm of the adrenal cortex with a variable prognosis. At present, predicting the course of the disease and clinical outcome in patients presents significant difficulties, since many aspects of the treatment of ACC have not been studied or require clarification. In particular, the prognostic value of markers that are used in clinical practice has not been fully determined. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Histological and immunohistochemical studies of the surgical material of adren

Current insight into the transient X-zone in the adrenal gland cortex.

Mouse models have been widely used in the study of adrenal gland development and diseases. The X-zone is a unique structure of the mouse adrenal gland and lineage-tracing studies show that the X-zone is a remnant of the fetal adrenal cortex. Although the X-zone is considered analogous to the fetal zone in the human adrenal cortex, the functional significance of the X-zone has remained comparatively more obscure. The X-zone forms during the early postnatal stages of adrenal development and regresses later in a remarkable sexually dimorphic fashion. The formation and regression of the X-zone can
