The association between implicit and explicit affective inhibitory control, rumination and depressive symptoms.

Inhibitory control underlies one's ability to maintain goal-directed behavior by inhibiting prepotent responses or ignoring irrelevant information. Recent models suggest that impaired inhibition of negative information may contribute to depressive symptoms, and that this association is mediated by rumination. However, the exact nature of this association, particularly in non-clinical samples, is unclear. The current study assessed the relationship between inhibitory control over emotional vs. non-emotional information, rumination and depressive symptoms. A non-clinical sample of 119 participan

Trauma-related symptoms in neglected preschoolers and affective quality of mother-child communication.

This study (a) assessed whether child neglect is associated with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and dissociative symptoms in the preschool period and (b) examined the role of quality of mother-child affective communication in the development of trauma-related symptoms among neglected children. Participants were 33 neglected and 72 non-neglected preschoolers (mean age = 60 months). Neglected children were recruited from the Child Protection Agencies. Neglected and non-neglected children victims of other form of abuse were excluded from the study. Trauma symptoms were evaluated through mot

Well-being therapy. A novel psychotherapeutic approach for residual symptoms of affective disorders.

BACKGROUND: There is increasing awareness of the prognostic value of residual symptomatology in affective disorders and of the need for specific therapeutic strategies in this phase of illness. The aims of the study were to apply a novel, short-term psychotherapeutic approach for increasing well-being, based on Ryff's conceptual model, to remitted patients with affective disorders and to compare the results with those obtained with symptom-oriented cognitive behavioural strategies. METHODS: Twenty patients with affective disorders (major depression, panic disorder with agoraphobia, social pho

Affective symptoms in focal epilepsy: A scoping review of localization and lateralizing findings.

Emotional experiences during focal seizures are often misinterpreted as psychiatric disorders. We aimed to evaluate symptoms involving affective symptoms at seizure onset. We aimed to identify the most prevalent affective symptoms at seizure onset and characterize their localizing and lateralizing value. We performed a scoping review based on Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses-extension for Scoping Reviews guidelines. A systematic search identified records from 4 databases: PubMed, Embase, CINAHL (via EBSCOhost), and Web of Science. Two reviewers independently s…

Hippocampal subfields volumes and affective symptoms of patients with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy.

BACKGROUND: Hippocampal sclerosis (HS) is the most frequent neuropathological finding in mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE-HS), leading to hippocampal atrophy due to neuronal loss and gliosis. Anxiety and depression are highly prevalent in drug-resistant MTLE-HS patients, but their neuroanatomical correlates remain unclear. This study investigates the independent association between affective symptoms and hippocampal subfield volumes in unilateral MTLE-HS. METHODS: We analyzed 46 consecutive patients with unilateral drug-resistant MTLE-HS using MRI-based volumetry of hippocampal subfields o…

Blood immuno-metabolic biomarker signatures of depression and affective symptoms in young adults.

BACKGROUND: Depression is associated with alterations in immuno-metabolic biomarkers, but it remains unclear whether these alterations are l … ression well before the typical age of onset of cardiometabolic diseases. The relationships between affective symptoms and blood immuno-metabolic biomarkers indicate two biotypes of depressive symptoms (somatic-inflamed vs anxious-non-inflamed). These patterns are relevant for prognosis and prediction, highlighting the potential usefulness of immuno-metabolic biomar …

Maternal affective symptoms and sleep quality have sex-specific associations with placental topography.

BACKGROUND: The impacts of prenatal maternal affective symptoms on the placental structure are not well-established. Employing Geographic Information System (GIS) spatial autocorrelation, Moran's I, can help characterize placental thickness uniformity/variability and evaluate the impacts of maternal distress on placental topography. METHODS: This study (N = 126) utilized cohort data on prenatal maternal affective symptoms and placental 2D and 3D morphology. Prenatal maternal depression, stress, anxiety and sleep quality were scored for each trimester using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression S…

Depressive Symptoms during Pregnancy: Prevalence and Correlates with Affective Temperaments and Psychosocial Factors.

Pregnancy is a unique experience in women's life, requiring a great ability of adaptation and self-reorganization; vulnerable women may be at increased risk of developing depressive symptoms. This study aimed to examine the incidence of depressive symptomatology during pregnancy and to evaluate the role of affective temperament traits and psychosocial risk factors in predicting them. We recruited 193 pregnant women, collected data regarding sociodemographic, family and personal clinical variables, social support and stressful life events and administered the Mood Disorder Questionnaire (MDQ),

Acute suicidal affective disturbance and borderline personality disorder symptoms: Distinct yet correlated constructs.

OBJECTIVE: Acute Suicidal Affective Disturbance (ASAD) has been proposed to address the need for a suicide-specific diagnostic entity that better accounts for the psychological symptoms that may emerge during an acute suicidal crisis and that may precede imminent suicidal behaviors. However, additional research is needed to establish ASAD's delimitation from preexisting psychological disorders, especially disorders that include suicidal thoughts and behaviors in their diagnostic criteria such as borderline personality disorder (BPD). METHODS: We estimated two Gaussian graphical models (GGMs),

Perfectionism affects change in psychological symptoms.

The primary goal of this study was to examine how perfectionism affects psychological symptoms during the course of treatment. We examined session-by-session symptom changes in a sample of 105 adult clients who presented for counseling at a psychology training clinic housed at a large Midwestern university in the United States. Using a recently developed measure of perfectionism (Short Almost Perfect Scale [SAPS]) that possesses good psychometric features, we were able to investigate effects of both maladaptive (high self-criticism) and adaptive (high standards with low self-criticism) perfect

Self-ambivalence and affective symptoms: reciprocal associations and indirect effects via self-focused attention.

Previous research has shown that individuals can simultaneously hold positive and negative self-evaluations, a phenomenon known as self-ambivalence (Bhar & Kyrios, 2007). Elevated self-ambivalence has been consistently associated with greater affective symptoms, including depressive symptoms and negative affect. However, the longitudinal associations between self-ambivalence and affective symptoms, as well as the role of self-focused attention in these associations, remain unclear. This two-wave longitudinal study examined reciprocal associations between three dimensions of self-ambivalence, n…

Circadian rhythm disruption and multiple sclerosis: The role of affective symptoms and temperamental traits.

Sleep and circadian rhythm disturbances are common clinical features in people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) and related demyelinating conditions. Affective symptoms may shape vulnerability to circadian dysregulation. This pilot cross-sectional study examined how affective symptoms and underlying temperamental dispositions relate to circadian rhythm instability in a population of newly diagnosed PwMS and related demyelinating conditions, defined as patients evaluated within 30 days after discharge from the index hospitalization during which the diagnosis was established. Measures included Bec…

Exploring Symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder in People With Affective Disorders: A Network Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) frequently co-occurs with affective disorders, such as major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD), yet the structure of BPD symptoms within these populations remains insufficiently characterized. This study utilizes network analysis to investigate the network structure of BPD symptoms in individuals with affective disorders. METHODS: This study included 1323 participants: 783 individuals with affective disorders (MDD [n = 245], BD I [n = 120], BD II [n = 418]) and 540 controls without a history of psychiatric disorders.
