Risk Factors for Secondary Immunodeficiency in the Aged.

Secondary immune deficiencies, in which the immune system is weakened or compromised by another factor, have become prevalent. Secondary immune deficiencies are particularly pertinent in aged people because numerous etiologies cause immune dysfunction in this population. Immunosenescence is characterized by inflammaging, cellular senescence, thymic involution, reduced naive T- and B-cell output, restricted antigen receptor diversity, and impaired innate immune cell function, leading to increased susceptibility to infection and diminished vaccine responsiveness. Malnutrition is common in aged p

Ageing as a risk factor for neurodegenerative disease.

Ageing is the primary risk factor for most neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer disease (AD) and Parkinson disease (PD). One in ten individuals aged ≥65 years has AD and its prevalence continues to increase with increasing age. Few or no effective treatments are available for ageing-related neurodegenerative diseases, which tend to progress in an irreversible manner and are associated with large socioeconomic and personal costs. This Review discusses the pathogenesis of AD, PD and other neurodegenerative diseases, and describes their associations with the nine biological hallmarks o

Age as compromising factor for implant insertion.

BACKGROUND: Over the past two decades, Snodgrass tubularized incised plate (TIP) urethroplasty has become one of the dominant surgical techniques with wide applications and excellent cosmetic results. However, TIP has many limitations. We performed a retrospective study at our department and assessed the outcome of the inlay internal preputial graft for extending the applications of TIP. METHODS: Between January 2009 and December 2013, we performed a retrospective study consisting of approximately 508 primary distal and moderate cases. Patients with primary distal hypospadias who had mild or

Maternal age as a risk factor for hypospadias.

PURPOSE: Hypospadias incidence rates have been widely reported to be increasing. During the last 20 years there has been a significant increase in the number of women who delay childbearing until their mid 30s. Therefore, it was of interest to determine if increasing maternal age is an independent risk factor for hypospadias. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data from the New York State Department of Health and California Birth Defects Monitoring Program were analyzed from 1983 to 1996 by maternal age groups of less than 20, 20 to 24, 25 to 29, 30 to 34, and 35 or greater years. A Poisson model was fit

[Is age a limiting factor for carotid surgery?].

To evaluate the role of carotid surgery in elderly patients 75 years and older, we reviewed 912 carotid endarterectomies performed on 806 patients between 1987 and 1990. There were 151 patients (19% of the whole series) aged 75 years and older (160 endarterectomies, group A), including 29 octogenarians, vs 655 patients under 75 years of age (group B). There were more women in the elderly age group (44%) than in the younger one (38%). Symptoms, risk factors, operative outcome and follow up data of the two groups were compared. The risk profile was similar for the two age groups, with exception

Social Factors, Age, and Health at Time of Dementia Diagnosis.

IMPORTANCE: A timely diagnosis is crucial in ensuring high-quality care for individuals with dementia. Comparing age and health status at the time of dementia diagnosis across population subgroups can provide insights into vulnerable groups that may experience delayed diagnosis and/or a poorer prognosis. OBJECTIVE: To examine how age and health at the time of dementia diagnosis vary across sociodemographic subgroups. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A nationwide cross-sectional study of individuals with an incident dementia diagnosis from either specialist care or who were dispensed antide

Sex- and age-associated factors drive the pathophysiology of MASLD.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is strongly associated with obesity. Sex and age affect MASLD prevalence and pathophysiology. The use of animal models fed Western-style diets is vital for investigating the molecular mechanisms contributing to metabolic dysregulation and for facilitating novel drug target identification. However, the sex-associated and age-associated mechanisms underlying the pathophysiology remain poorly understood. This knowledge gap limits the development of personalized sex-specific and age-specific drug treatments. METHODS: You

Risk Factors for Idiopathic Nephrotic Syndrome Relapse in Pediatric Age.

Introduction. Eighty percent of children with primitive nephrotic syndrome (NS) will have at least one relapse in their life. Specific risk factors could be associated with a higher incidence of relapses and a worse prognosis. This study aims to deepen the demographic and onset-related risk factors in children with known diagnosis of primitive NS attending the Pediatric Nephrology Unit of the University Hospital of Padua. Methods. Observational, descriptive study of all children (1-11 years old) with a known diagnosis of Primitive NS who attended our Pediatric Nephrology Unit between 1 January

Sex differences in associated factors for age-related hearing loss.

The prevalence and age of onset of hearing loss differ according to sex. This study aimed to identify associated factors for age-related hearing loss (ARHL) and determine whether there are differences between males and females regarding associated factors for ARHL. This cross-sectional study used data from adults who underwent medical examinations including hearing tests from 2011 to 2021. A total of 2,349 individuals were included. The study conducted sex-specific analyses using both univariate and multiple regression. Univariate analysis employed logistic regression, while multiple regressio

Age-Related Factors Associated With The Risk of Hip Fracture.

OBJECTIVE: Advancing age is a powerful risk factor for hip fractures. The biological mechanisms through which aging impacts the risk of hip fractures have not been well studied. METHODS: Biological factors associated with "advancing age" that help to explain how aging is associated with the risk of hip fractures are reviewed. The findings are based on analyses of the Cardiovascular Health Study, an ongoing observational study of adults aged ≥65 years with 25 years of follow-up. RESULTS: The following 5 age-related factors were found to be significantly associated with the risk of hip fractur

Age at menarche in Korean adolescents: trends and influencing factors.

BACKGROUND: An increased incidence of central precocious puberty has been recently reported in South Korea, which suggests an ongoing downward trend in pubertal development in the Korean population. We aimed to verify the trend in age at menarche in young Korean women during the last decade and associated factors. METHODS: We analyzed a population-based sample of 3409 Korean girls, aged 10-18 years, using data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (KNHANES) II (2001), III (2005), IV (2007-2009), and V (2010 and 2011). Average age at menarche was studied using the K

Overview of Risk Factors for Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD).

Age related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of blindness in individuals older than 65 years of age. It is a multifactorial disorder and identification of risk factors enables individuals to make life style choices that may reduce the risk of disease. This review discusses the role of genetics, sunlight, diet, cardiovascular factors, smoking, and alcohol as possible risk factors for AMD. Genetics plays a more significant role in AMD than previously thought, especially in younger patients, histocompatibility locus antigen (HLA) and complement system genes being the most significa

Cardiovascular risk factors at age 30 following pre-term birth.

BACKGROUND: Recent epidemiological evidence has shown increased rates of cardiovascular mortality and associated risk factors in those born small. However, scarce information exists concerning cardiovascular risk factors in adulthood following pre-term birth, or distinguishing the relative contributions of length of gestation and fetal growth to small size at birth. METHODS: Prospective follow-up of 458 30-year-olds whose mothers took part in a randomized controlled trial of antenatal betamethasone for the prevention of neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (147 born at term, 311 born pre-te

[Risk factors of urogenital chlamydiosis in women of reproductive age].

The aim of this study is to assess the risk factors of urogenital chlamydiosis in women of reproductive age. 489 women in the ages of 18-49 years have been questioned and investigated. 268 (55.4%) of them had urogenital chlamydiosis. The control group was formed with 214 women without chlamydial infection. For the assessment of risk factors the odds ratio was calculated. 85.7% of patients were urban citizens with the following education levels: 55.6% of them held high school diplomas and 28.2% had university degrees. The results show that the risk factors of urogenital chlamydiosis are: age <3

Risk factors and age-incidence relationships for contralateral breast cancer.

The nation-wide Swedish Family-Cancer Database was used to analyze the risk of contralateral breast cancer among 72,092 women with unilateral breast cancer. Contralateral breast cancer, defined as being diagnosed 6 months or more after the first breast cancer, affected 2,529 women (3.5%). In a young age group the incidence of contralateral breast cancer was 50 times higher than the incidence of first breast cancer; for all contralateral breast cancer the difference was 5-fold. Because only 1 breast was at risk for contralateral breast cancer, the true differences to unilateral cancer were 2 ti
