BACKGROUND: Serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) ≤40 IU/L is normal. This cutoff, although determined in adults, is widely used for newborns. We studied the reference ranges for ALT and AST in newborns in India.

The level of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) in blood donors has been related to the frequency of posttransfusion hepatitis in recipients. Sixty-seven donors with elevated ALT levels were evaluated to define the duration and significance of the elevation.
