Q fever in Alberta-infection in humans and animals.

The presence of Q fever antibodies in the milk of cattle in Alberta is described. The incidence of positive milk samples rose from 0.8% of herds tested in 1959 to 7.7% in 1964. The largest number of infected animals is in the southern part of the province.A case of Q fever in an infant is reported. This occurred on the Duffield Indian Reserve near Edmonton in November 1963. Two of 44 blood samples collected at random from asymptomatic individuals on the Reserve in February 1965 contained complement-fixing antibodies to Q fever antigen.Studies on milk from dairy cattle in the area were negative…

Determining rubella immunity in pregnant Alberta women 2009-2012.

Rubella IgG levels for 157,763 pregnant women residing in Alberta between 2009 and 2012 were analyzed. As there have been no reported cases of indigenous rubella infection in Canada since 2005, there has been a lack of naturally acquired immunity, and the current prenatal population depends almost entirely on vaccine induced immunity for protection. Rubella antibody levels are significantly lower in younger maternal cohorts with 16.8% of those born prior to universal vaccination programs (1971-1980), and 33.8% of those born after (1981-1990) having IgG levels that are not considered protective…

Retrospective review of rectal cancer surgery in northern Alberta.

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies, including research published more than 10 years ago in Northern Alberta, have demonstrated improved outcomes with increased surgical volume and subspecialisation in the treatment of rectal cancer. We sought to examine contemporary rectal cancer care in the same region to determine whether practice patterns have changed and whether outcomes have improved. METHODS: We reviewed the charts of all patients with rectal adenocarcinoma diagnosed between 1998 and 2003 who had a potentially curative resection. The main outcomes examined were 5-year local recurrence (LR) …

Retrospective review of all-terrain vehicle accidents in Alberta.

BACKGROUND: All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) are frequently associated with injuries and deaths. In spite of this, very few guidelines, let alone legal restrictions, exist to guide users of these machines. METHODS: We conducted a standardized review of prospectively collected data from the Alberta Trauma Registry. All patients who were involved in ATV-related traumas from 2003 to 2008 with an Injury Severity Score (ISS) greater than 12 were included. The variables studied were age, sex, type of vehicle, purpose of use, person injured (driver or passenger), ISS, distribution of injuries, length of …

Group A streptococcal infections in Alberta, Canada 2018-2023.

Group A streptococcal or Streptococcus pyogenes infections have been increasing post-COVID-19 pandemic. We describe the epidemiology of S. pyogenes pharyngitis and invasive disease in Alberta, Canada 2018-2023. Positive pharyngitis specimens were identified from throat swabs collected from pharyngitis patients. Invasive S. pyogenes was defined as the isolation of S. pyogenes from a normally sterile site or severe skin infection. S. pyogenes isolates were emm typed. Pharyngitis and invasive disease displayed seasonal trends preceding the COVID-19 pandemic followed by a sharp decrease during COV…

Septicemic pasteurellosis in farmed elk (Cervus canadensis) in Alberta.

Septicemic pasteurellosis is a bacterial disease of domestic and wild animals including bison, elk, and pronghorn antelope caused by Pasteurella multocida. Here we report 2 cases of septicemic pasteurellosis in farmed elk. Pasteurella multocida serogroup B was isolated from multiple tissues in both animals. Gene sequencing (16S ribosomal RNA) and BLAST query confirmed that the sequence is 99% to 100% homologous to the P. multocida sequences in the database.

Costs of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder in Alberta, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Although many programs targeting fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) are implemented, the province of Alberta is still lacking information on costs of FASD. OBJECTIVES: To estimate the costs of FASD in Alberta based on available US and Canadian research on costs of FASD, and Alberta data. METHODS: Two types of costs were estimated. The annual long-term economic cost of FASD, which referred to a projected amount of money incurred by lives of the cohort of children born with FASD each year, was estimated by multiplying the lifetime cost of caring for each child born with FASD wi…

Carotid body tumours: the University of Alberta Hospital experience.

At the University of Alberta Hospital between 1950 and 1988, 17 patients who had a diagnosis of carotid body tumour were seen; 15 of them were followed up for an average of 8 years (range from 1 to 38 years). In 14 patients the tumour was removed surgically. There were no operative deaths and no strokes occurred. The most frequent complication was cranial nerve deficit. Of the 15 patients followed up, 10 (67%) manifested a deficit of the facial, vagus or hypoglossal nerve. The primary tumour was diagnosed histologically as a benign neoplasm in all 14 patients operated on, but in 3 distant meta…

Diseases of wapiti utilizing cattle range in southwestern Alberta.

Specimens from 28 wapiti (Cervus elaphus canadensis) were collected by hunters in southwestern Alberta in 1984. Various tests were performed to detect infections and conditions that could affect cattle sharing the range or cause disease in wapiti. Serum antibodies were present against leptospiral serovars autumnalis (25%), bratislava (4%), and icterohaemorrhagiae (8%), and the viruses of bovine virus diarrhea (52%), infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (45%), and parainfluenza type 3 (13%). No serological evidence of bovine respiratory syncytial virus, Brucella, Anaplasma, bluetongue virus, or ep…

Blastomycosis: report of the first case from Alberta Canada.

The first known case of laboratory confirmed blastomycosis in Alberta occurred in 1970. The patient, who is believed never to have left Alberta, presented with of headaches, sore neck and impaired intellect. Initially, tuberculous or cryptococcal meningitis was suspected, but laboratory findings did not support the diagnosis. A fungus resembling Blastomyces dermatitidis was isolated from the venticular cerebrospinal fluid and lung at autopsy. A few yeast cells suggestive of B. dermatitidis were seen in lung and brain tissue sections. Initial attempts at in vitro conversion of the mycelial form…

Avian reovirus infection in turkeys with neurological disease in Alberta.

Avian reoviruses (ARVs) are ubiquitous and play a role in diseases affecting various organs in chickens and turkeys. In recent years, tenosynovitis and lameness emerged as the most frequently reported clinical conditions. In this report, we describe a case of neurological disease associated with ARV infection in 4-week-old turkeys in Alberta. A flock of 7650 commercial turkey toms exhibited neurological signs such as torticollis and ataxia that affected ~3 to 4% of birds in the flock. Histologic examination of brain samples collected at 6 wk revealed nonsuppurative encephalitis. A pooled brain…

Histoplasmosis acquired in Alberta, Canada: an epidemiological and genomic study.

BACKGROUND: The classic geographical range of histoplasmosis in North America primarily includes the states and provinces adjacent to the Ohio, Mississippi, and St Lawrence riverways. Although Alberta, Canada is not typically considered a region of risk for histoplasmosis, cases with suspected local acquisition have been reported. We aimed to investigate the epidemiology and geographical distribution of cases of histoplasmosis in Alberta to assess evidence for local acquisition of infections, using genomic analysis for corroboration. METHODS: We did an epidemiological and genomic investigatio…

Developmental Coordination Disorder in Alberta: A Journey into Knowledge Translation.

Aim: Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) is a motor disorder affecting coordination and performance in daily tasks. Studies regarding design and implementation of knowledge translation strategies effecting DCD practice changes in pediatric rehabilitation settings is limited and DCD remains under-recognized and under-diagnosed with an under-utilization of evidence-based practice. This knowledge-to-practice gap was identified in central Alberta, Canada when a lower caseload of clients with DCD and a lower rate of DCD referrals to a neurodevelopmental assessment clinic was observed, given i…
