Endothelial activation is associated with albuminuria in multibacillary leprosy.

Leprosy may present kidney and endothelial abnormalities, being a risk factor for complications. However, the involvement of renal and vascu … 04), and the number of skin lesions (rho = 0.468, p <0.001). Moreover, in MB patients who presented albuminuria >15 mg/g of creatinine, VCAM-1 showed a significant correlation with increased albuminuria and improved the correlation with the number of skin lesions (rho= 0.563, p=0.010). In conclusion, higher systemic VCAM-1 levels were associated with the mult …

[Frequency of albuminuria in patients with bronchial obstructive diseases.].

The aim of the study was to study the frequency and features of albuminuria in patients with chronic bronchoobstructive lung diseases. The prospective study involved 219 patients with COPD (GOLD 1-4) and 201 patients with persistent bronchial asthma (BA) of varying severity, who were examined in 2018-2019. The control group consisted of 48 volunteers, comparable in age and gender. In addition to General clinical studies, all patients were calculated BMI and visceral obesity detection based on the waist-hip ratio (WHR), and the Smoking index (HCI) was calculated. Albuminuria was determined base…

A molecular mechanism explaining albuminuria in kidney disease.

Mammalian kidneys constantly filter large amounts of liquid, with almost complete retention of albumin and other macromolecules in the plasma. Breakdown of the three-layered renal filtration barrier results in loss of albumin into urine (albuminuria) across the wall of small renal capillaries, and is a leading cause of chronic kidney disease. However, exactly how the renal filter works and why its permeability is altered in kidney diseases is poorly understood. Here we show that the permeability of the renal filter is modulated through compression of the capillary wall. We collect morphometric…

Measurement of micro-albuminuria in patients with diabetes mellitus.

Persistent micro-albuminuria (MA) in patients with diabetes mellitus identifies a high-risk group for the development of vascular complications. Since the methodology involved in measuring MA has not been standardised, MA in 40 diabetic patients was measured in order to compare nephelometry with radio-immunoassay (RIA). The effect of storage (7 days), the influence of freezing and thawing on MA levels, and possible differences between glass and plastic containers were also assessed. An excellent correlation (r = 0.971) was found between RIA and nephelometry. Urine could be safely stored at 4 d…

Albuminuria in Heart Failure: From Marker to Modifiable Target.

Albuminuria, once viewed solely as a renal biomarker, has emerged as an integrative indicator of endothelial dysfunction, vascular injury, and systemic congestion in heart failure (HF). Evidence now suggests it not only reflects disease severity but also contributes to the cardiorenal mechanisms that drive progression. Hemodynamic stress, glomerular glycocalyx disruption, and renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system activation promote albumin leakage through oxidative and inflammatory injury. Large studies such as BIOlogy Study to TAilored Treatment in Chronic Heart Failure and FINerenone trial to…

Immunoglobulin locus associates with serum IgG levels and albuminuria.

The interaction between IgG and Fc-γ receptors in glomeruli contributes to the development of several types of proteinuric glomerular diseas … ned the effect of SHR-A3 and SHR-B2 alleles at this block on albumin excretion in an F2 intercross. Albuminuria doubled with inheritance of SHR-A3 alleles. In summary, allelic variation in IgH or nearby genes may modulate the susceptibility to hypertensive renal injury in SHR-A3 rats.

Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome promotes reversal albuminuria during sleep.

INTRODUCTION: Sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) may induce albuminuria during sleep which could reflect one of the possible pathogenetic mechanisms regarding cardiovascular risk. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We studied 224 patients with newly diagnosed OSAS, free of any chronic disease, and any regular drug therapy. The levels of urine albumin/creatinine ratio (ACR) before (ACR-bsleep) and immediately after (ACR-asleep) a sleep study were determined. The same procedure was repeated during the first night on CPAP treatment (n = 121) and in 46 reevaluated patients, after 3 months, on CPAP therapy. Ambulat…

Albuminuria in heart failure: what do we really know?

PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: To describe the role of albuminuria as a risk marker for heart failure and a predictor for treatment effect on heart failure prognosis. RECENT FINDINGS: The level of albumin in the urine is a predictor of heart failure in the general population and in patients with cardiovascular risk, such as those with diabetes. Mild elevations of albuminuria, in the microalbuminuria range, appear to be associated with impaired systemic endothelial function. This increases the chance of developing hypertension, diabetes and cardiovascular disease, ultimately leading to heart failure. …

Albuminuria in chronic heart failure: prevalence and prognostic importance.

BACKGROUND: Increased excretion of albumin in urine might be a marker of the various pathophysiological changes that arise in patients with heart failure. Therefore our aim was to assess the prevalence and prognostic value of a spot urinary albumin to creatinine ratio (UACR) in patients with heart failure. METHODS: UACR was measured at baseline and during follow-up of 2310 patients in the Candesartan in Heart failure: Assessment of Reduction in Mortality and morbidity (CHARM) Programme. The prevalence of microalbuminuria and macroalbuminuria, and the predictive value of UACR for the primary c…

Reduction in albuminuria predicts diminished progression in diabetic nephropathy.

We have evaluated putative predictors of the progression in diabetic nephropathy during long-term antihypertensive treatment. Twenty hypertensive insulin-dependent diabetic patients with nephropathy were followed for three (2 to 5) years before, and for three years during antihypertensive treatment with metoprolol and furosemide. Fall rate in glomerular filtration rate (GFR) was 9.5 +/- 3.8 ml/min/year (mean +/- SD) before and 3.6 +/- 3.6 during antihypertensive treatment. Albuminuria was 1442 (150 to 7564) micrograms/min (median range) in the last year before and 880 (96 to 3310) micrograms/m…

Albuminuria in Lupus Nephritis: the hidden threat to cardiovascular health.

OBJECTIVE: Systemic lupus erythematosus often leads to cardiovascular and renal complications, particularly in patients with lupus nephritis. In clinical practice, renal treatment response is commonly assessed using the Complete Renal Response criteria defined by the Consensus document of the Spanish Group for the Study of the Glomerular Diseases. These criteria, however, rely predominantly on proteinuria while albuminuria is often overlooked. The primary objective of our study was to assess the prevalence of pathological albuminuria in patients who met Complete Renal Response criteria. Second…

A meta-analysis of albuminuria as a surrogate endpoint for kidney failure.

Albuminuria is a central biomarker in chronic kidney disease (CKD), used for the detection and prognosis of the disease. In clinical trials assessing CKD progression, change in the level of albuminuria is a candidate surrogate endpoint for kidney failure. Evaluation of the validity of this surrogate endpoint across a diverse range of interventions and populations is required to support its further acceptance. Here, in an individual participant data analysis of 48 randomized controlled trials (studies) involving 85,681 participants, we assessed the association between treatment effects on 6-mon…

Epicardial and liver fat implications in albuminuria: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Albuminuria is considered an early and sensitive marker of kidney dysfunction, but also an independent cardiovascular risk factor. Considering the possible relationship among metabolic liver disease, cardiovascular disease and chronic kidney disease, we aimed to evaluate the risk of developing albuminuria regarding the presence of epicardial adipose tissue and the steatotic liver disease status. METHODS: A retrospective long-term longitudinal study including 181 patients was carried out. Epicardial adipose tissue and steatotic liver disease were assessed by computed tomography. Th…
