Korsakoff syndrome (KS) is characterized by dense anterograde and retrograde amnesia. There is often a temporal gradient to the retrograde amnesia, with earlier memories more readily recalled than recent memories. Executive functioning has also been found to be impaired in KS. However, research comparing executive functioning between chronic alcoholics (AL) and patients with KS has been relatively sparse to date. Every day, more than 700,000 people in the United States receive treatment for alcoholism. In recent years, much progress has been made in understanding how both psychological approaches and medications can help these patients achieve sobriety, including evaluation of existing treatment approaches and development of new ones. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the Serenity Lodge alcohol rehabilitation program by comparing a group of 137 men who entered the program with the same number of similar men who did not enter the program after an admission to a detoxification hospital. The South Oaks Gambling Screen is a 20-item questionnaire based on DSM-III criteria for pathological gambling.
