We examined the case report written by Ke et al, describing a rare clinical case. In this editorial, we would like to emphasize the differential diagnosis of rectal masses through a rare case. We describe a case of ameboma, which manifested itself as a mass in the rectum in terms of imaging and rectoscopic features, in an immunocompetent patient who had complaints of constipation and rectal bleeding for weeks. The initial diagnosis suggested malignancy due to imaging and rectoscopic features, but the pathology report reported it as amoebiasis. After ten days of metronidazole and oral amebicide

Salmonella typhi is a rare cause of liver abscess. We describe a 47-year-old African male with multiple liver abscesses due to S. typhi in an area where hepatic amebiasis is endemic. The patient did not respond appropriately to amebicidal therapy and culture of the liver aspirate on two occasions yielded S. typhi. The Widal test, initially negative, became positive on repeat testing 10 days later. Percutaneous aspiration combined with appropriate antibiotic therapy resulted in a complete recovery. No predisposing cause could be found. We report the clinical, radiological, and microbiological f

In a retrospective study 453 cases of amebiasis were analyzed with regard to duration, purpose, and location of the patients' stay abroad. Diarrhea and abdominal complaints were the predominating features of the history, but occasionally constipation was the only symptom. The patients usually had chronic intestinal amebiasis which was intermittently slightly dysenteric, rather than non-dysenteric as defined by the WHO. There were two cases each of ameboma and colonic stricture and three liver abscesses, one of which proved fatal after complicating peritonitis. Therapy with a tissue and a lumen

Over the past 20 years, gastrointestinal infections in developing countries have been a serious health problem and are the second leading cause of morbidity among all age groups. Among pathogenic protozoans that cause diarrheal disease, the parasite Entamoeba histolytica produces amebic colitis as well as the most frequent extra-intestinal lesion, an amebic liver abscess (ALA). Usually, intestinal amebiasis and ALA are treated with synthetic chemical compounds (iodoquinol, paromomycin, diloxanide furoate, and nitroimidazoles). Metronidazole is the most common treatment for amebiasis. Although

In order to investigate the effects of the overlapping of cinchophene and phenothiazine structures, connected with antiinflammatory and analgesic activities, several derivatives of 2-phenothiazin-2'-yl-cinchoninic acid were prepared through the condensation of isatin or 5-substituted isatins with 2-acetylphenothiazine or its 10-ter-aminoalkyl derivatives. Most of these compounds exhibit analgesic activity, but only a few, of those so far tested, show antiinflammatory activity. Compound (G) with R' = H, R" = C2H5 and R"' = dimethylaminoethyl shows analgesic activity corresponding to 88% of that

Miltefosine is an alkylphosphocholine compound that is used primarily for treatment of leishmaniasis and demonstrates in vitro and in vivo antiamebic activity against Acanthamoeba species. Recommendations for treatment of amebic encephalitis generally include miltefosine therapy. Data indicate that treatment with an amebicidal concentration of at least 16 μg/ml of miltefosine is required for most Acanthamoeba species. Although there is a high level of mortality associated with amebic encephalitis, a paucity of data regarding miltefosine levels in plasma and cerebrospinal fluid in vivo exists i

In its invasive form, the trophozoite is responsible for clinical syndromes, ranging from classical dysentery to extraintestinal disease with emphasis on hepatic amebiasis. Abdominal pain, tenderness and diarrhea of watery stool, sometimes with blood, are the predominant symptoms of amebic colitis. Besides the microscopic identification of Entamoeba histolytica, diagnosis should be based on the detection of specific antigens in the stool or PCR associated with the occult blood in the stool. Amebic dysentery is treated with metronidazole, followed by a luminal amebicide. The trophozoite reaches

Pleuropulmonary manifestations of hepatic amebiasis occurred in 30 patients; 18 (60%) presented with at least 1 pulmonary complaint and 10 (33%) had multiple pulmonary symptoms. In 14 patients (47%), abnormalities were found on examination of the chest. In 16 chest roentgenograms (53%), there was at least 1 abnormality: right-sided pleural effusion (9 patients) and elevated right hemidiaphragm (8 patients) were the most common. All patients were treated with metronidazole (Flagyl) and had resolution of the amebic liver abscess and pulmonary disease. Pleuropulmonary disease is a common complica

Chlorocresol has antibacterial and antifungal properties, yet its effectiveness in eradicating Acanthamoeba spp. remains unexplored. Acanthamoeba species trophozoites are usually sensitive to biocides, whereas cysts tend to be more resistant. This study aimed to evaluate the cysticidal activity of chlorocresol against Acanthamoeba polyphaga. Chlorocresol concentrations of 0.02, 0.04, and 0.08% were prepared and A. polyphaga cysts were incubated at room temperature (28-37 C) for 1, 24, 48, and 72 hr at each concentration. Cyst viability was evaluated using trypan blue staining and the percentag
