[Transient global amnesia syndrome].

Nine patients with the syndrome of transitory global amnesia (TGA) have been examined. The authors present the clinical characteristics of the syndrome, describe the differential diagnosis, forms and course of the syndrome, as well as methods of its treatment and prognosis. It has been demonstrated that the syndrome of TGA may develop in the presence of both primary cerebral pathology (insufficient circulation in the vertebrobasilar system) and general pathogenic impacts leading to impairment of the systemic and cerebral hemodynamics. It has been established that transient recurrent mnemonic d

Transient global amnesia--a review.

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is an isolated amnesic syndrome with normal neurological examination where patients remain alert and communicative with no loss of personal identity; however, they experience striking loss of memory for recent events and an impaired ability to retain new information. TGA could be triggered by venous congestion and there is evidence of association between younger patients and history of migraine. Most episodes last 2-12 h and the recurrence rate of future amnesic events is very low.

Marijuana-induced transient global amnesia.

A 6-year-old boy accidentally became intoxicated with marijuana secondary to ingesting cookies laced with marijuana. He presented with retentive memory deficit of sudden onset that was later diagnosed as transient global amnesia. Transient global amnesia as a result of marijuana intoxication is an extremely rare event.

Aetiology of transient global amnesia.

The pathophysiology of transient global amnesia (TGA) has been obscure since the definition of this syndrome more than 30 years ago. Current hypotheses include migraine, seizure, or transient cerebral arterial ischaemia. However, none of these potential mechanisms explain both the absence of other neurological signs or symptoms during TGA, and its frequent precipitating activities: many of which would be expected to result in marked increases in venous return from the arms to the superior vena cava. Patients with TGA also commonly have a Valsalva manoeuvre at the onset of attacks. I suggest th

Transient global amnesia and stroke.

Four patients who experienced isolated transient global amnesia had computed tomographic evidence for a cerebral infarct (3 cases) or hemorrhage (1 case). The medial part of the temporal lobe was involved in 2 patients (left in 1, right in 1), the left lentiform nucleus in 1 patient, and the left thalamus in 1 left-handed patient. These findings suggest that transient global amnesia may be associated with stroke in some cases, but it has no localizing value within the temporodiencephalic structures. No cerebrovascular events occurred over a 1-to 5-year follow-up, suggesting that transient glob

Transient global amnesia and meningioma.

A patient with episodes of transient global amnesia and transient partial amnesia was found to have a meningioma impinging on the right medial temporal lobe. Multiple partial complex seizures and EEG abnormalities suggested an epileptogenic disorder.

Transient global amnesia and migraine.

Twelve patients with transient global amnesia (TGA) had prior migraines (six classical and six common). In three patients, classic migrainous phenomena accompanied TGA, and in nine patients severe headache accompanied the amnestic attack. Migrainous vascular dysfunction in the dominant posterior cerebral artery territory could explain TGA: (1) The pathophysiology and transient nature of TGA have led many to postulate posterior circulation vascular disease; migraine is a vascular disorder with a posterior circulation bias. (2) TGA and migraine share common precipitants. (3) Migraine differs fro
