In multicellular organisms, development is based in part on the integration of communication systems. Two neuroendocrine axes, the hypothala … teroids in post-embryonic developmental processes is their critical role in metamorphosis in anuran amphibians. Metamorphosis involves modifications to the morphological and biochemical characteristics of all larval tissues to enable the transition from one life stage to the next life stage that coincides with an ecological niche switch. This transition in a …

The search for new bioactive molecules that could be used in therapeutics is a major public health issue, particularly in the treatment of certain diseases such as cancer. In this context the exploration of the venom of animals (snakes, amphibians, cones, scorpions, insects...) that produce molecules of various structures and biological activities, is a very promising direction. Research in this area led to the discovery of neuropeptides, hormones, toxins, antimicrobial peptides and other extremely potent mediators. These are now used in many areas both in fundamental research and in translati…

The amphibian carotid labyrinth, which corresponds to the mammalian carotid body and carotid sinus, is innervated by nerve fibers containing substance P (SP), calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP), neuropeptide Y (NPY), FMRFamide (FMRF), and somatostatin (SOM). SP, CGRP, VIP, and NPY immunoreactive varicose fibers are more densely distributed in the peripheral portion of the carotid labyrinth than FMRF and SOM fibers. The time of appearance of SP, CGRP, and VIP is different for each. First CGRP fibers, then SP fibers appear at an early stage of larval

The simple architecture of the amphibian lung makes it possible to study the movement of substances across a barrier with permeability and bioelectric properties that are dominated by the alveolar epithelium. When mounted as a planar sheet between identical Ringer solutions the excised lung of the bullfrog exhibited a transmural electrical potential difference of nearly 20 mV (pleural surface positive) and a resistance of about 700 omega cm2. Unidirectional fluxes of 36Cl, Br-, I-, and SCN- across the short-circuited lung were asymmetrical. The net 36Cl- flow from pleura to lumen matched the s

Amphibian populations worldwide are declining in response to environmental threats, including contaminants, yet our ability to study sensitive populations in their exposure and response to environmental contaminants is limited by the reliability and accuracy of non-lethal sampling methods. Mercury (Hg)—a widespread contaminant—can be transformed in freshwater systems to methylmercury (MeHg), a more bioavailable and toxic form, threatening amphibians using these habitats. We refined methodology for non-lethal sampling and Hg determination across 13 amphibian species, where we demonstrate the ef…

Rapid warming in polar regions is causing large changes to ecosystems, including altering environmentally available mercury (Hg). Although subarctic freshwater systems have simple vertebrate communities, Hg in amphibians remains unexplored. We measured total Hg (THg) in wetland sediments and methylmercury (MeHg) in multiple life-stages (eggs to adults) of wood frogs (Rana sylvatica) and larval boreal chorus frogs (Pseudacris maculata) from up to 25 wetlands near Churchill, Manitoba (Canada), during the summers of 2018-2019. We used egg mass counts for wood frogs from 24 wetlands (2015-2019) an…

Reptiles and amphibians are popular in the exotic pet trade, where Australian species are valued for their rarity and uniqueness. Despite a near-complete ban on the export of Australian wildlife, smuggling and subsequent international trade frequently occur in an unregulated and unmonitored manner. In 2022, Australia listed over 100 squamates in Appendix III of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) to better monitor this trade. We investigated current trade and assessed the value of this Australian CITES listing using web-scraping methods t…

Melatonin is a hormone known as an endogenous temporal marker signaling the dark phase of the day. Although the eyes seem to be the main site of melatonin production in amphibians, little information is available about the natural variation in ocular melatonin levels and its modulation following immune stimulation. We investigated the daily variation of plasma and ocular melatonin levels in bullfrogs (Lithobates catesbeianus) and their modulation following an immune stimulation with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in yellow cururu toads (Rhinella icterica). For the daily variation, bullfrogs were ble…

Amphibians are known for their skin rich in glands containing toxins employed in passive chemical defense against predators, different from, for example, snakes that have active chemical defense, injecting their venom into the prey. Caecilians (Amphibia, Gymnophiona) are snake-shaped animals with fossorial habits, considered one of the least known vertebrate groups. We show here that amphibian caecilians, including species from the basal groups, besides having cutaneous poisonous glands as other amphibians do, possess specific glands at the base of the teeth that produce enzymes commonly found…

Chikungunya virus is an emerging arbovirus of significant human-health concern. Little is known about its sylvatic cycle, including whether ectothermic vertebrates are permissive to infection. In this study, individuals from ten species of reptiles and amphibians were inoculated with chikungunya virus and samples of blood were tested to characterize viremia and seroconversion. Viremia was not detected in cane toads, house geckos, or American alligators, but most of the green iguanas, red-eared sliders, ball and Burmese pythons, leopard frogs, Texas toads, and garter snakes developed viremia. P…

Amphibian and reptile microbiomes are important contributors to host health and ecosystem dynamics but understudied compared to microbiomes … ases and bioinformatics tools. We also discuss several avenues for future research that would bring amphibians and reptiles to the forefront of microbiome research. With the continued implementation of classic culture-based and sequencing approaches paired with cutting-edge tools in vivo, in vitro, and in silico, herpetofauna microbiome research is poised fo …

In the present study, the effect of nerve stimulation on the secretory activity of the ovary of adult females was analyzed for the first time in amphibians. Results revealed that in Rhinella arenarum the stimulation of nerves that supply the gonad induced an increase in estradiol and progesterone secretion, this response showing differences during the reproductive cycle of the species. During the postreproductive period, an increase in estradiol secretion was observed while, in the reproductive period, progesterone secretion increased. Our results suggest that the sympathetic division of the a…

In nature, multiple waves of exposure to the same parasite are likely, making it important to understand how initial exposure or infection affects subsequent host infections, including the underlying physiological pathways involved. We tested whether experimental exposure to trematodes (Echinostoma trivolvis or Ribeiroia ondatrae) affected the stress hormone corticosterone (known to influence immunocompetence) in larvae representing five anuran species. We also examined the leukocyte profiles of seven host species after single exposure to R. ondatrae (including four species at multiple time po

Eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV) is endemic throughout most of the eastern United States. Although it is transmitted year round in Florida, transmission elsewhere is seasonal. The mechanism that enables EEEV to overwinter in seasonal foci remains obscure. In previous field studies, early season EEEV activity was detected in mosquito species that feed primarily upon ectothermic hosts, suggesting that reptiles and amphibians might represent overwintering reservoir hosts for EEEV. To determine if this might be possible, two commonly fed upon amphibian and reptile species were evaluated as…

Amphibian population declines have been documented worldwide and environmental contaminants are believed to contribute to some declines. Mat … study is the first to confirm a correlation between Hg concentrations in female carcass and eggs in amphibians and among the first to describe co-transference of Se and Hg in an anamniotic vertebrate. The results suggest future work is needed to determine whether maternal transfer of Hg has transgenerational implications for amphibian progeny.

Vertebrate genomes are comprised of isochores that are relatively long (>100 kb) regions with a relatively homogenous (either GC-rich or AT-rich) base composition and with rather sharp boundaries with neighboring isochores. Mammals and living archosaurs (birds and crocodilians) have heterogeneous genomes that include very GC-rich isochores. In sharp contrast, the genomes of amphibians and fishes are more homogeneous and they have a lower overall GC content. Because DNA with higher GC content is more thermostable, the elevated GC content of mammalian and archosaurian DNA has been hypothesized t…
