First molecular evidence of equine granulocytic anaplasmosis in Pakistan.

Anaplasma phagocytophilum (A. phagocytophilum) is an obligate intracellular bacterium that causes equine granulocytic anaplasmosis (EGA) disease in equines. This pathogen has zoonotic potential, which makes it very important to be detected and controlled as early as possible. This study was aimed to assess the molecular prevalence, associated risk factors of EGA along with its effects on various hematological parameters. This study revealed an overall 10.67% prevalence in equine. Horses showed highest prevalence followed by mules and donkeys presenting 11.86, 10.53 and 9.43% prevalence, respec…

Death from Transfusion-Transmitted Anaplasmosis, New York, USA, 2017.

We report a death from transfusion-transmitted anaplasmosis in a 78-year-old man. The patient died of septic shock 2 weeks after a perioperative transfusion with erythrocytes harboring Anaplasma phagocytophilum. The patient's blood specimens were positive for A. phagocytophilum DNA beginning 7 days after transfusion; serologic testing remained negative until death.

Human anaplasmosis: the first Spanish case confirmed by PCR.

We report a case of human anaplasmosis (HA) fulfilling the confirmation criteria: epidemiologic data and clinical picture compatible with HA; presence of a morulae within polymorphonuclear leukocyte; and positive PCR assay for Anaplasma phagocytophilum: This case report shows the presence of HA in Spain.

Molecular basis for vaccine development against anaplasmosis and babesiosis.

Immunization of livestock against the erythroparasitic pathogens Anaplasma marginale, Babesia bigemina, and Babesia bovis with safe and effe … of immune mechanisms, provides the basis for development of effective recombinant vaccines against anaplasmosis and babesiosis.

Human granulocytic anaplasmosis with rash and rhabdomyolysis: A case report.

Human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA) is a tick-borne infection caused by Anaplasma phagocytophilum. Only seven cases of HGA have been reported in Japan to date. We report the case of a 61-year-old female farmer who developed HGA with rash and rhabdomyolysis. The patient had fever and erythema covering the entire body, including the palms. An induration with an eschar was observed on the right leg, indicating that the patient had been bitten by a tick. Elevated serum creatinine and creatinine kinase levels and hematuria indicated rhabdomyolysis. We suspected Japanese spotted fever, a tick-born…

Trigeminal Neuralgia As the Principal Manifestation of Anaplasmosis: A Case Report.

Unlike the tick-borne diseases ehrlichiosis and Lyme disease, human granulocytic anaplasmosis is rarely associated with neurological complications. In this case report, we present a patient who developed a severe, lancinating headache shortly after known tick exposure. A tick-borne PCR panel was positive for Anaplasmosis phagocytophilum and neurology evaluation yielded a concomitant diagnosis of new-onset trigeminal neuralgia. Our case explores the relationship between anaplasmosis infection and trigeminal neuralgia.

Clinical Presentation and Outcomes of Children With Human Granulocytic Anaplasmosis.

BACKGROUND: Adults with the tick-borne disease human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA) have a spectrum of acute febrile illnesses that, if untreated, might be severe. Clinical presentation and outcomes of children with HGA have been poorly described. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted to determine the frequency, presentation, and outcomes of pediatric patients with HGA between 1994 and 2015 in a region of Wisconsin in which HGA is highly endemic. Patients with related International Classification of Diseases Ninth and Tenth Revision (ICD-9 and ICD-10, respectively) codes or positiv…

Epidemiology of bovine anaplasmosis and babesiosis in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The various parameters which interact in the epizootiology of babesiosis and anaplasmosis and which it is necessary to obtain in a survey are analysed and the two diseases compared. Where no data are available from Latin America and the Caribbean, the references from Australia and the United States of America are discussed. The two principal objectives of a study on the epidemiology of babesiosis and anaplasmosis are: to determine the risk of occurrence to understand the relevant factors leading to outbreaks. The first objective is relatively simple to achieve for both diseases by calculating …

Infection related membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis secondary to anaplasmosis: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Anaplasmosis is a tick-borne disease with a range of clinical manifestations, from a flu-like illness with fever and myalgias to a severe systemic disease with multisystem organ failure. Although renal involvement is not a common presentation, there have been few cases reporting acute kidney injury from Anaplasmosis. CASE SUMMARY: We present a 55-year-old female with anaplasmosis who developed acute kidney injury due to membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (MPGN). The patient originally presented with cough and shortness of breath. She was admitted to the hospital with a diagn…

Retrospective Multicenter Study of Human Granulocytic Anaplasmosis, France, 2012-2024.

Human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA), caused by Anaplasma phagocytophilum transmitted through tick bites, remains poorly documented in France. We conducted a retrospective, multicenter study of cases in Alsace during 2012-2024, including 39 HGA episodes in 38 patients PCR positive for A. phagocytophilum. Most (63.2%) patients were men, median age was 60.5 years, and 76.3% lived in rural areas. A tick bite was reported in 61.6% of cases. Frequent symptoms included fever (97.4%), fatigue (61.5%), and headache (61.5%). Laboratory findings showed elevated C-reactive protein (100%), thrombocytopen…

Anaplasmosis encephalitis and infection of non-myeloid bone marrow precursors.

Due to climate change, infections from tickborne pathogens are becoming more prevalent in the Northern Hemisphere. Human granulocytic anaplasmosis, caused by the obligate intracellular gram-negative bacteria Anaplasma phagocytophilum and carried by Ixodes ticks, can lead to morbidity and mortality in select populations. Anaplasmosis is commonly accompanied by significant cytopaenia, the pathophysiology of which remains unknown. Our case report describes an uncommon meningoencephalitic presentation of anaplasmosis with substantial anaemia and thrombocytopaenia. Additionally, we propose a mechan…
