UNLABELLED: Infantile pyknocytosis (IP) is a rare hematological entity of newborns. It is a form of hemolytic anemia with unusual red cell morphology: the red blood cells are distorted, irregular, and small with many projections. Spontaneous resolution usually occurs by 4-6months of age.
OBSERVATION: We describe the clinical features and biological parameters of 5 cases of IP. The first symptoms were always early jaundice, which required phototherapy. Anemia was severe in all babies and red blood cell transfusion was needed.
CONCLUSION: IP is a rare cause of neonatal anemia whose diagnosis i

BACKGROUND: Neonatal appendicitis (NA) is a rare condition with an estimated incidence of 0.04% to 0.2%. It is more prevalent in male preterm infants, with a mortality rate of 20% to 25%. It is usually misdiagnosed as neonatal necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) owing to its diverse diagnostic challenges. Poor perfusion, hypoxia, anemia, or any other condition that impairs intestinal blood supply is a risk factor for bowel injury, which could explain the physiopathology of NA.
CLINICAL FINDINGS: We describe an interesting case of a preterm infant with recurrent episodes of abdominal distension an

PURPOSE: Maternal anemia is a significant risk factor for maternal morbidity and mortality, increasing risk of preterm birth, intrauterine growth restriction, stillbirth, and death. Moderate and severe anemia in pregnancy is defined as hemoglobin (Hb) <10 g/dl and Hb < 7 g/dl, respectively. We aimed to characterize the association of maternal anemia with maternal, neonatal, and placental outcomes in a resource-limited setting.
METHODS: Data were collected from a prospective cohort of 352 pregnant women at a tertiary academic Ugandan hospital. One hundred and seventy-six (50%) of women were li

Congenital dyserythropoietic anemia (CDA) type I is an inherited disorder characterized by macrocytic anemia with pathognomonic morphologic ultrastructural features of the erythroid precursors. The authors recently cloned the CDAN1 gene and identified one founder missense mutation in all of their Bedouin patients. In a previous study, the authors found that the majority of their 31 Bedouin patients had anemia and jaundice during the first month of life and required blood transfusions; some had persistent pulmonary hypertension. In the present retrospective evaluation of 70 Bedouin patients wit

OBJECTIVE: To assess the value of the fetal nonstress test (NST) in predicting neonatal transfusion in pregnancies complicated by red cell isoimmunization.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the records of all patients evaluated for isoimmunization in pregnancy for the period January 1992 to December 1994. In addition to prenatal care, serial ultrasonography, and invasive testing when indicated, patients had NSTs two times per week. Nonstress tests were interpreted as either reactive or nonreactive using standard criteria. Results of the last NST before delivery were analyzed. Neonatal outc

The case of an infant born in association with a large chorioangioma of the placenta is presented. The maternal complications of polyhydramnios, preeclampsia, and premature labor are those described in the "syndrome" of a chorioangioma. The immediate neonatal course was unusually complicated by severe microangiopathic anemia with persistent thrombocytopenia and hemolysis which required three exchange blood transfusions. The relationship between the neonatal complications and the placental tumor is discussed in terms of possible pathophysiologic mechanisms.

BACKGROUND: Maternal anemia, particularly iron deficiency anemia (IDA), is a significant global health concern, affecting approximately 30% of women worldwide. Iron plays a crucial role in fetal brain development, influencing processes such as myelination, neurotransmitter synthesis, and oxygen transport. Despite theoretical links between prenatal iron deficiency (ID) and neurodevelopment, its actual effects on neonatal cognitive, motor, and socioemotional outcomes remain unclear. This study systematically evaluates the impact of maternal anemia on neonatal neurodevelopment.
METHODS: A system

Anemia and thrombocytopenia occur frequently in preterm neonates. Anemia can be physiologic, but is mostly caused by iatrogenic blood sampling. Thrombocytopenia may be present at birth due to intrauterine disorders, but is most commonly detected after birth following bacterial infection. There is no consensus regarding optimal hemoglobin and platelet thresholds for transfusion. An increasing number of studies suggest that restrictive transfusion guidelines may be preferable to liberal guidelines. Better markers to assess the need of transfusions are needed as well as the implementation of effe

OBJECTIVES: To determine the rate of fetal and neonatal brain lesions and define risk factors for such lesions in pregnancies complicated by Twin Anemia Polycythemia Sequence (TAPS).
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of monochorionic twin pregnancies which were diagnosed with TAPS in a single tertiary medical center between 2013 and 2021. Pregnancies were followed with fetal brain neurosonogram every 2 weeks and fetal brain MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) was performed when indicated at 28-32 weeks of gestation; post-natal brain imaging included neonatal brain ultrasound. OBJECTIVE: The incidence of fetomaternal hemorrhage that is severe enough to cause neonatal anemia is not known. Owing to its relative rarity, much of the literature describing this condition is in the form of case reports and small case series. We performed a large, muiticentered, sequential, case series to determine the incidence, antecedents and outcomes.
STUDY DESIGN: From the multicentered databases of Intermountain Healthcare, we obtained records of all neonates with hematocrit (Hct) <30% or hemoglobin (Hgb) <10 g dl(-1) on the day of birth, who had Kleihauer-Betke staining or flow cyto

Fetomaternal hemorrhage (FMH) is a rare perinatal condition characterized by the transplacental transfer of fetal erythrocytes into the maternal circulation. It poses significant risks, including fetal anemia, hydrops fetalis, and maternal alloimmunization, and often remains underdiagnosed due to non-specific clinical presentations and limited diagnostic accessibility. We present a case of a term neonate delivered via cesarean section at 38 weeks' gestation who exhibited severe anemia and hyperbilirubinemia. Blood group analysis revealed maternal-neonatal Rh incompatibility, while flow cytomet

Gallstones are rarely seen in preterm neonates with most cases reported in term singletons without any identifiable risk factors. Although most cases are self-resolving, neonatal gallstones can be associated with significant complications. We report a case of 34-week gestation monochorionic diamniotic twins with twin anemia-polycythemia sequence (TAPS) where the recipient twin presented with gallstones on the first day of life. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of gallstones in preterm twins following TAPS.

OBJECTIVES: Massive fetomaternal hemorrhage (FMH) is a rare but sometimes life-threatening event, and surviving neonates may suffer major neurological complications. Severe neonatal anemia (SNA) affected by massive FMH is less reported in the literature. This study aims to explore the clinical characteristics, laboratory diagnoses, treatments and outcomes of SNA affected by massive FMH.
METHODS: Data were collected retrospectively from the hospital's electronic medical record system. All neonates born in the hospital and admitted to the neonatal unit diagnosed as SNA affected by massive FMH f

BACKGROUND: Congenital dyserythropoietic anemia type 1 (CDA1) is an autosomal recessive disorder of ineffective erythropoiesis, resulting in increased iron storage. CDA1 is usually diagnosed in children and adolescents but can rarely present in the neonatal period with severe anemia at birth. There are no prior reports of neonatal liver histologic findings of CDA1. We report a case of CDA1 in a newborn presenting with severe anemia, cholestasis and liver failure, where liver biopsy helped confirm the diagnosis.
CASE SUMMARY: A term infant, born via emergency Cesarean section, presented with c

BACKGROUND NFE2 encodes p45/NF-E2, a transcriptional regulator of megakaryocyte maturation and platelet production. However, germline NFE2-associated cytopenias are rare; consequently, the clinical spectrum is incompletely defined. CASE REPORT We report the case of a preterm neonate born to consanguineous parents who developed day-1-onset bicytopenia with transfusion-dependent thrombocytopenia and intermittent normocytic anemia. Initial evaluation did not support immune-mediated or consumptive causes; moreover, counts were refractory to intravenous immunoglobulin and romiplostim (a thrombopoie
