Myocarditis in Humans and in Experimental Animal Models.

Myocarditis is defined as an inflammation of the cardiac muscle. In humans, various infectious and non-infectious triggers induce myocarditis with a broad spectrum of histological presentations and clinical symptoms of the disease. Myocarditis often resolves spontaneously, but some patients develop heart failure and require organ transplantation. The need to understand cellular and molecular mechanisms of inflammatory heart diseases led to the development of mouse models for experimental myocarditis. It has been shown that pathogenic agents inducing myocarditis in humans can often trigger the

Experimental animal models of bullous pemphigoid.

Bullous pemphigoid (BP) is a cutaneous autoimmune blistering disease characterized immunohistologically by dermal-epidermal junction separation, an inflammatory cell infiltrate in the upper dermis, and autoantibodies directed against the hemidesmosomal proteins BP230 and BP180. A passive transfer mouse model of BP that uses rabbit antibodies targeted against murine BP180 reproduces the key clinical and histological features of human BP. Using this model, it has been demonstrated that subepidermal blistering is initiated by anti-BP180 antibodies and mediated by complement activation, mast cell

[The experimental models of Parkinson's disease in animals].

The current review describes the modem Parkinson's disease models in animals, their advantages, limitations and disadvantages. It was noted that the most widespread up-to-date models based on etiology of the Parkinson's disease. Although toxins mostly produce the Parkinson's disease, a study of involved genes allows investigating not only inherited but also sporadic (not inherited) forms of disease since the same genes are involved in both cases. Mutations of genes lead to formation of "mutant" toxic proteins, which produce a death of the specialized neurons of the nigrostriatal dopaminergic s

Studies of cryptorchidism in experimental animal models.

UNLABELLED: Undescended testes are the most common inborn anomaly in boys but our understanding of the causes is still sparse. Experimental models of cryptorchidism in various species of animals have been used by many investigators in order to gain a better understanding of the aetiology, pathophysiology and potential treatment of the disorder. This review presents what has been gained so far by studies using experimental animal models of cryptorchidism. CONCLUSIONS: Early orchidopexy in experimentally cryptorchid animals of different species prevents, at least partially, against testicular d

Experimental models of epilepsy in young animals.

Seizures occur more frequently early in life. Some of these early seizures may eventually become epilepsy. Others are reactive seizures due to excessive environmental stimuli that, in any other age group, might not have elicited a similar response. To understand the developmental aspects of seizures and epilepsy in humans, it is important to study these processes in animals of equivalent ages. In this paper, we describe several animal models of developmental seizures, including their electroclinical manifestations and their validity in respect to human epileptic syndromes. There are several fa

Experimental studies of osteopetrosis in laboratory animals.

Osteopetrosis is a metabolic bone disease characterized by a systemic increase in skeletal mass. It results from a defect in the production or function of osteoclasts and is inherited in nine genetically distinct osteopetrotic animal mutations and man. Studies of these mutations have revealed that osteopetrosis is a complex, heterogeneous disorder in its expression, etiology, and response to treatment by bone marrow transplantation or by hormone/growth factor therapy. These animal mutations have been valuable tools for probing the pathogenesis and treatment of osteopetrosis, and information ob

Anesthetic and analgesic considerations in the experimental animal.

Many new compounds and combinations of many of the more traditional drugs have been used in a wide range of species. This, plus the rapid development in equipment for inhalational anesthesia, has simplified the restraint, anesthetic, post-surgical, and analgesic management of experimental animals.

Antibiotic combinations in experimental infections in animals.

The study of experimental infections has afforded the opportunity to examine the response to antimicrobial therapy in the complex milieu of living animals. This review summarizes the information gained from studies of combination antibiotic therapy for experimental endocarditis, meningitis, and other infections in which host defenses are unable to participate in effecting cure. The studies cited suggest that antibiotic combinations that yield rapid microbial killing are more effective in the treatment of these selected infections than are those combinations that do not give enhanced killing. I

Experimental animal models of adriamycin cardiotoxicity.

Since patients exhibit both acute and chronic cardiac toxic effects from Adriamycin, the salient characteristics of the reported animal models for both acute and chronic cardiotoxicity are reviewed. This review reveals that while the pathology of these models is often well-characterized, the physiologic, biochemical, and nutritional variables are, in general, poorly defined.
