Validation and operational application of a rapid method for rabies antigen detection.

The Veterinary Laboratory Europe (VLE) deployed a direct, rapid immunohistochemical test (DRIT), developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), to the US military veterinary units in Iraq and Afghanistan. The test detects rabies virus antigen in fresh and frozen brainstem samples from various animal species. The goal was to conduct surveillance in 2 countries without current rabies diagnostic capabilities and little historical data on rabies prevalence. During the deployment the DRIT was evaluated, and Veterinary Corps officers and technicians were trained to operate the te

Parenteral nutritional support in the small animal patient.

Malnutrition has a direct relationship to complications associated with ineffective wound and fracture healing, inadequate immune responses, decreased tolerance to cancer therapy, muscle weakness, and certain organ dysfunctions (heart and liver). Malnutrition combined with disease, injury, or stress increases the metabolic rate in patients above that of resting. These patients are undergoing an accelerated form of starvation, which is more common than presently recognized in veterinary medicine and may be responsible for the less than optimal responses to proper therapies. Diseased or injured

Assessing Zoonotic Disease Exposure and Occupational Health and Safety Practices Among Veterinary Services Fieldworkers in North West Province, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Veterinary fieldworkers play an important role in managing animal and public health risks, yet they face significant occupational hazards, particularly from zoonotic diseases. In South Africa's North West Province, the occupational health and safety (OHS) of this workforce remains understudied. This study aimed to describe and characterize the OHS practices, zoonotic disease risk exposures, and contributing factors affecting veterinary services fieldworkers in the North West Province. METHODS: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among 137 veterinary fieldworkers, inc

Equine rabies.

With the continued increase in the number of wildlife rabies cases reported across the United States and Canada, this disease will remain a threat to the horse as the potential for exposure to infected wildlife and other domestic animals is likely to also increase. Because there are no rapid, definitive antemortem diagnostic tests, the tentative diagnosis is based upon the variable and sometimes nonspecific clinical signs. Although the CSF analysis may be helpful in some cases, it may not be abnormal. Nor is collection of the specimen always practical in the field situation. The FAT on neural

Development and pilot application of a point-of-need molecular xenomonitoring protocol for tsetse (Glossina sp.) in a low-resource setting.

BACKGROUND: Tsetse flies (Glossina sp.) are the primary vectors of trypanosomes causing human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) and animal African trypanosomiasis (AAT). Disease surveillance can be carried out by detecting Trypanosoma DNA in tsetse, also known as molecular xenomonitoring. Whilst molecular methods can increase the efficiency and sensitivity of pathogen detection, trained staff and a well-equipped laboratory are required. In many cases, DNA extraction and screening is outsourced to a central laboratory in a major city either in-country or abroad, far removed from original tsetse col

Implementation of a One Health Surveillance System in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Active animal disease surveillance is essential for detecting zoonotic emerging infectious diseases. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), limited infrastructure, economic instability, and armed conflict constrain surveillance capability. This ongoing work to characterize the prevalence of zoonoses like Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus implements an in-country One Health approach to disease surveillance and capacity building in a limited-resource setting. Veterinarians and technicians from the DRC's Central Veterinary Laboratory with technical support from national and internatio

'SMASH' recommendations for standardised microscopic arthritis scoring of histological sections from inflammatory arthritis animal models.

Animal models for inflammatory arthritides such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and psoriatic arthritis are widely accepted and frequently used to identify pathological mechanisms and validate novel therapeutic strategies. Unfortunately, many publications reporting on these animal studies lack detailed description and appropriate assessment of the distinct histopathological features of arthritis: joint inflammation, cartilage damage and bone erosion. Therefore, the European consortium BeTheCure, consisting of 38 academic and industrial partners from 15 countries, set as goal to standardise the hi

Evaluation of vaginal discharge with the Metricheck device and the relationship to reproductive performance in postpartum dairy cows.

Vaginal mucus during estrus was examined with the Metricheck device and the relationship to the reproduction of high-yielding dairy cows was studied. The study was conducted in 99 dairy herds located in Western Germany and 1348 Holstein-Friesian heifers and cows showing spontaneous estrus were examined. Independent of the Metricheck result, the animals were inspected by professional insemination technicians and those suitable for insemination (n = 989) were bred by artificial insemination (AI). Reproductive performance was characterized by non-return rate at 90 days (NRR90). The discharge of t

Comparison of ovine faecal Strongyle egg counts from an accredited laboratory and a rapid, on-site parasite diagnostic system utilising a smartphone app and machine learning.

Traditional treatment for gastrointestinal helminths in grazing livestock often involves untargeted, metaphylactic blanket treatment of animals with anthelmintics. As a result, resistance to anthelmintic drugs has become a significant issue for farmers and veterinarians worldwide, impacting farm profitability and animal welfare. Faecal egg counts (FECs) are an important diagnostic test to combat further anthelmintic resistance as they enable practitioners to better distinguish between animals that require treatment and those that do not. FECs are labour-intensive, time-consuming and require tr

Considering Q fever when working with laboratory sheep.

The sheep (Ovis aries) is somewhat less common than smaller species in laboratory settings, but personnel who work with sheep or in a facility that houses sheep should be aware that certain zoonotic diseases are common in sheep. They should also know how to prevent transmission of zoonotic disease in facilities that house or work with small ruminants. Knowledge of diseases such as query fever (Q fever), which can cause severe human morbidity (and in some cases death), needs to be especially emphasized. In this paper, the author describes potential causes, transmission and manifestations of Q f

Rabies in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa--where are we going wrong?

Rabies is a growing problem in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. This study investigated dog ecology, vaccination coverage and rabies neutralising antibody levels in 203 randomly selected dogs within a local municipality in the former Transkei area. Responses to vaccination were also evaluated in 80 of these dogs. The population was remarkably uniform in size, breed and condition. Slightly over 1/5th of the population was between 6 weeks and 1 year of age, while very few dogs reached 10 years or older. According to owner responses, the Animal Health Technicians achieved a total vaccin

Implantation of Vascular Access Buttons™ for Prolonged Blood Collection in Venously-Catheterized Ferrets.

In vivo research studies requiring repeated blood sampling ideally involve a simple collection technique while also minimizing stress and discomfort to the animal. Implantation of an indwelling vascular catheter provides a simple, pain-free route for repeated blood collection over an extended period of time. Ferrets were implanted with indwelling jugular vein catheters (JVCs) for daily collection of blood samples over the course of a three week study period. To prevent damage to the catheters by other ferrets, JVCs were attached to Vascular Access Buttons™ (VABs) due to their secure and self-c

The effects of repeated oral gavage on the health of male CD-1 mice.

Oral gavage is a widely used method for administering substances to animals in pharmacological and toxicological studies. The authors evaluated whether oral gavage causes behavioral indicators of stress, increased mortality rate, alterations in food and water consumption and body weight or histological lesions in CD-1 mice. Gavage was carried out once per d for 5 d per week over 6 consecutive weeks. The mortality rate of mice in this study was 15%. Mice subjected to gavage did not undergo changes in food or water consumption during the study, and their mean body weights and relative organ weig

A review on the diagnosis of animal trypanosomoses.

This review focuses on the most reliable and up-to-date methods for diagnosing trypanosomoses, a group of diseases of wild and domestic mammals, caused by trypanosomes, parasitic zooflagellate protozoans mainly transmitted by insects. In Africa, the Americas and Asia, these diseases, which in some cases affect humans, result in significant illness in animals and cause major economic losses in livestock. A number of pathogens are described in this review, including several Salivarian trypanosomes, such as Trypanosoma brucei sspp. (among which are the agents of sleeping sickness, the human Afric
