[Transition of occurrence of anisakiasis and its paratenic host fishes in Japan, with pathogenesis of anisakiasis].

The number of anisakiasis according to a nation-wide statistical survey totaled 4682 cases until June 1987 in Japan. Of these 4296 cases are gastric anisakiasis (including 215 cases of gastric terranovasis), 375 intestinal anisakiasis and 11 extra-gastrointestinal anisakiasis. Pseudoterranova larva does not invade the intestine, and worms are vomited in most cases. Clinical diagnosis of intestinal anisakiasis is more difficult than that of gastric anisakiasis, and it also is hard to find the worm itself in histopathological examination. Therefore the number of actual intestinal anisakiasis is …

Proximal ileitis secondary to anisakiasis.

Intestinal anisakiasis is a disease caused by human infection by Anisakis larva that can be found in undercooked fish that is increasing worldwide. The symptoms, typically abdominal pain, develop within 5-7 days after the fish intake. The diagnosis may be suspected based on common anamnesis (unfrozen fish intake) with abdominal pain or bowel obstruction and confirmed by blood serology. Resective surgery is only used in severe cases.

Acute intestinal anisakiasis: CT findings.

Small bowel anisakiasis is a relatively uncommon disease that results from consumption of raw or insufficiently pickled, salted, smoked, or cooked wild marine fish infected with Anisakis larvae. We report a case of intestinal anisakiasis in a 63-year-old woman presenting with acute onset of abdominal complaints one day after ingestion of raw wild-caught herring from the Northsea. Computed tomography (CT) scanning demonstrated thickening of the distal small bowel wall, mucosa with hyperenhancement, mural stratification, fluid accumulation within dilated small-bowel loops and hyperemia of mesent…

Intestinal anisakiasis mimicking intestinal obstruction.

We report one case of acute abdomen after the ingestion of raw or undercooked fish containing nematode larvae of the genus Anisakis. Early diagnosis is very important as it could prevent unnecessary surgical procedures since the symptoms of intestinal anisakiasis may mimic other illnesses such as appendicitis, ileitis or peritonitis. We suggest that anisakiasis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of patients with acute abdomen.

[Gastric anisakiasis diagnosed by endoscopy].

Anisakiasis is a parasitic infestation of increasing incidence in Spain. The case of a 75-years-old male diagnosed with gastric anisakiasis by endoscopy is presented. This case presents some peculiarities such as the previous ingestion of undercooked microwaved fish and the posterior serologic study (determination of IgE specific for Anisakis simplex) which confirmed the diagnosis. The importance of the endoscopic techniques in the diagnosis and treatment of gastric anisakiasis is emphasized.

Anisakiasis: The risks of seafood consumption.

CONTEXT AND AIMS: Japanese cuisine is now popular worldwide, and consumption of raw fish has thus increased at sushi bars and Japanese restaurants outside Japan. Anisakiasis, also known as herring-worm disease, is caused by ingesting larval nematodes in raw seafood and is a common illness in Japan. However, due to the rising popularity of Japanese food, gastroenterologists outside Japan need to be familiar with this disease. SUBJECTS AND METHODS AND RESULTS: We treated 158 patients presenting with acute gastrointestinal manifestations caused by anisakiasis from April 1991 to April 2000. One o…

[Anisakiasis: an infestation to be known by surgeons].

BACKGROUND: Anisakis infestation is related to the consumption of raw or undercooked fish. It can cause allergic reactions, or abdominal pai … ative in two and unknown in one. All patients were discharged uneventfully. CONCLUSIONS: Digestive anisakiasis may present as acute abdomen.
