Natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES)-Extracted Anthocyanins: Bioaccessibility in electrospun PEO microfibers.

Anthocyanins extracted with deep eutectic solvent (NADES) (chlorine-chloride: xylitol, 5:2) were used to produce polyethylene oxide (PEO) composites through electrospinning technique, analyzing their microscopic and physical characteristics. The coated anthocyanins were then subjected to in vitro gastrointestinal digestion to evaluate their bioaccessibility compared to lyophilized jussara pulp. The remaining total anthocyanin content (TAC) after intestinal in vitro digestion did not change significantly among the assessed samples, and both showed around 30% recovery. The TAC recovery after the…

Chemopreventive and therapeutic properties of anthocyanins in breast cancer: A comprehensive review.

Anthocyanins have received the attention of the scientific community because of their antioxidant, antimetastatic, and cancer-inhibitory properties. The aim of this review is to comprehensively summarize the possible mechanisms by which anthocyanins exhibit anticarcinogenic properties in breast cancer (BC) cell lines and animal models. Anthocyanins inhibit proinflammatory, signal transducer and activator of transcription 3, and nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cell pathways and increase the activities of detoxification enzymes. In addition, downregulation of metalloprot…

A novel niosome formulation for encapsulation of anthocyanins and modelling intestinal transport.

The bioavailability of drugs can be improved by regulating the structural properties, particularly lipoid systems, such as niosomes, can inc … west average particle size of 130 nm. In vitro release data showed the majority of the encapsulated anthocyanins were released at the end of 10 h. A mathematical model was developed to estimate the absorption of anthocyanins released from niosomes and cytotoxicity was assessed against neuroblastoma. Overall, these findings suggest that niosomal vesicles might …

Antioxidative activity of anthocyanins from purple sweet potato, Ipomoera batatas cultivar Ayamurasaki.

We evaluated the antioxidative activity of anthocyanins from an extract of the tuber of purple sweet potato (PSP) (Ipomoea batatas cultivar Ayamurasaki). Anthocyanins from PSP showed stronger 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical-scavenging activity than anthocyanins from red cabbage, grape skin, elderberry, or purple corn, and eight major components of the anthocyanins from PSP showed higher levels of activity than ascorbic acid. In PSP anthocyanin-injected rats and PSP beverage-administered volunteers, DPPH radical-scavenging activity in the urine increased. The elevation of plasma tr…

Mass spectrometric evidence for the existence of oligomeric anthocyanins in grape skins.

The fractionation of a grape skin extract by multilayer countercurrent chromatography coupled with step gradient elution allowed the preparation of a fraction almost devoid of free anthocyanins. This fraction appeared to be almost exclusively polymeric, as judged by liquid chromatographic-mass spectrometric (LC-MS) analysis, color-bleaching tests with sulfur dioxide, and thiolysis. Electrospray mass spectrometric analysis indicated that the pigmented material in this fraction was chiefly composed of direct condensation products of anthocyanin extending up to trimers. With regard to their linka…

Anthocyanins: Potential phytochemical candidates for the amelioration of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is described by too much hepatic fat deposition causing steatosis, which further develops into nona … ulation worldwide on natural sources owing to their ability to treat the root cause of the disease. Anthocyanins (ACNs) are naturally occurring polyphenolic pigments that exist in the form of glycosides, which are the glucosides of anthocyanidins and are produced from flavonoids via the phenyl propanoid pathway. To understand their mode of action in NAFLD and …

A coordinated network of MYB regulators orchestrates anthocyanin biosynthesis in banana.

Banana, a globally important staple fruit, is naturally deficient in anthocyanins; however, successful engineering of anthocyanin-enriched banana has not been reported to date. Herein, a regulatory network of five R2R3-MYBs (MusaUP1, MusaUP2, MbaMA2, MusaMA4, and MusaMA8) differentially synchronizing anthocyanin biosynthesis in banana bract is reported. RNA-seq data of red bract revealed a web of regulatory and structural genes fine-tuning anthocyanin accumulation through amalgamation of MYBs and bHLHs activities. Yeast one-hybrid (Y1H) demonstrated differential affinities of these MusaMYBs to…

Progress on gibberellin-mediated regulatory networks in apple anthocyanin biosynthesis.

Anthocyanins are crucial secondary metabolites in apple, which determine the commercial value of the fruit and confer essential protection against environmental stresses. Their biosynthesis is governed by a complex network of structural and regulatory genes, modulated by developmental cues, environmental factors, and phytohormone signaling. Emerging evidence highlights gibberellins (GAs) as pivotal regulators of anthocyanin accumulation in apple. Here, we review the current understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying gibberellin (GA)-mediated anthocyanin biosynthesis. We specifically …

Out of the blue: family-wide loss of anthocyanin biosynthesis in Cucurbitaceae.

Plant pigmentation secrets are among the oldest interests of plant scientists, with pigments such as chlorophyll, carotenoids, flavonoids and betalains contributing to the diversity of hues in higher plants. Anthocyanins, a class of flavonoids responsible for vibrant shades of pink, red and blue pigmentation, are almost ubiquitous in angiosperms but are replaced by betalains in some families in the order Caryophyllales. We investigated anthocyanin pigmentation in Cucurbitaceae, one of the largest fruit and vegetable families, characterised by white and yellow flowers and red, orange and green …

Extraction Solvents Affect Anthocyanin Yield, Color, and Profile of Strawberries.

Anthocyanins are a major group of plant pigments that have antioxidant activities. Pigments play a major role in human health and have attracted a lot of attention globally. Many factors affect anthocyanin yields, such as solvent type, incubation time, solvent-to-sample ratio, sample type, and temperature. The first parameter was tested, and the rest were considered constant in this experiment. A total of nine organic and water-based solvents (methanol and chloroform: methanol, acetone, ethanol, water) and their combinations were compared to extract anthocyanins from freshly-pureed strawberrie…

Anthocyanins and brain health in the context of obesity and Western-style diets.

Obesity, driven largely by the consumption of high-fat and high-carbohydrate diets, constitutes a major global public health concern. Emerging evidence frequently links obesity to comorbidities including neuroinflammation and altered brain function. Anthocyanins, a group of flavonoids abundant in fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes, have shown significant potential in modulating these effects. Indeed, preclinical and clinical studies support the capacity of anthocyanins and anthocyanin-rich extracts to mitigate the brain dysfunction associated with obesity and Western-style diets. This rev…

Dietary anthocyanins and the MAPK signaling pathway: from food sources to molecular mechanisms.

Anthocyanins (ACNs) are a sub-group of dietary polyphenols with well-studied safety, potency and efficacy against chronic inflammation and age-related diseases. However, the unified molecular mechanism remains not fully defined. This review integrates recent evidence on dietary ACNs, with emphasis on food sources, processing stability, and bioavailability, to elucidate how ACNs orchestrate health benefits via the MAPK signaling pathway. This review highlights an important, dualistic regulation: while suppressing stress-responsive p-p38 and p-JNK to prevent NF-κB-driven cytokine production and …

Anthocyanins as Key Phytochemicals Acting for the Prevention of Metabolic Diseases: An Overview.

Anthocyanins are water-soluble pigments present in fruits and vegetables, which render them an extensive range of colors. They have a wide distribution in the human diet, are innocuous, and, based on numerous studies, have supposed preventive and therapeutical benefits against chronic affections such as inflammatory, neurological, cardiovascular, digestive disorders, diabetes, and cancer, mostly due to their antioxidant action. Despite their great potential as pharmaceutical applications, they have a rather limited use because of their rather low stability to environmental variations. Their ab…
