Elected officials' online anti-vaccination statements respond to online engagement.

State legislators play a central role in U.S. vaccination policymaking, yet little is known about how social media engagement dynamics structure elected officials' online anti-vaccine messaging. We examine whether public engagement with lawmakers' anti-vaccine posts functions as a behavioral feedback loop, characterized by subsequent production of anti-vaccine content from those same legislators. Using a large-scale digital trace dataset of tweets from 2,619 state legislators in 2021, we identify 83,130 vaccine-related tweets and 3,314 anti-vaccine tweets via transformer-based text classificat

Perceptions of childhood immunization in São Paulo: quantitative-qualitative cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Vaccination hesitation spans from historical diseases such as smallpox to the current challenges with the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). In Brazil, vaccination faces obstacles related to trust and convenience. Despite the National Immunization Program, fear of adverse effects as well as misinformation challenge confidence in vaccines, and anti-vaccine movements have gained momentum. OBJECTIVES: This study investigated childhood vaccine refusal, including COVID-19 vaccines, by comparing the reasons for and sociodemographic differences between vaccinated individuals and those who h

When Deepfakes Meet Herd Immunity: Artificial Intelligence, Vaccine Avoidance, and the Next Infodemic Threat.

Vaccination remains among the most effective public health interventions, but its impact increasingly depends on public trust and a reliable … to the preparedness and resilience of public health systems during future pandemics. We discuss how anti-vaccination movements may change in the AI era and propose responses centered on trust-building, digital health literacy, information surveillance, and community engagement to support vaccine confidence and pandemic preparedness.

On Antiscience and Antisemitism.

Recent surges in antivaccine activism and other antiscience trends now converge with rising antisemitism. During the COVID-19 pandemic, authoritarian elements from the far right in North America and Europe often invoked Nazi imagery to describe vaccinations or at times even blame the Jewish people for COVID-19 origins and vaccine profiteering. Such tropes represent throwbacks to the 14th century, when European Jews were persecuted during the time of the bubonic plague. This article provides both historical and recent perspectives on the links between antiscience and antisemitism, together with

Rethinking the antivaccine movement concept: A case study of public criticism of the swine flu vaccine's safety in France.

In this article I discuss the definition of "the Antivaccine Movement" using the case of the French controversy over the safety of the 2009 pandemic flu vaccine. I show that the group of main actors who criticized the vaccine's safety is heterogeneous. This heterogeneity can be found in the type of arguments mobilized to question the vaccine's safety and in these actors' likelihood of being involved in any vaccine-related controversies. I show that only a minority of these actors rejected vaccination in general and mobilized against all vaccination campaigns. Most of these actors only occasion

Examining the independent and interactive roles of intolerance of uncertainty in vaccination intent.

Vaccine hesitancy remains common and sociopolitical anti-vaccine movements continue to gain ground in the United States and beyond. To inform more effective public health campaigns and increase vaccination intent, research is needed on how cognitive and emotional variables interact to influence vaccination intent. Intolerance of uncertainty (IU), defined as experiencing distress or discomfort in response to uncertain situations, is known to influence both approach and avoidance behaviors. IU may interact with other decision-making factors that impact vaccination intent, including people's actu

Trends in Selective Childhood Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) Vaccine Nonreceipt Surrounding the MMR-Autism Controversy: National Immunization Survey Analyses, 1996-2019.

While vaccination has been hailed as one of the most significant, life-saving public health achievements, vaccine hesitancy and resistance has consistently come from those concerned about risks associated with vaccinating children. The Wakefield et al. paper published in The Lancet in 1998 claiming that the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine caused autism was a pivotal moment in the modern anti-vaccine movement despite its retraction from the journal in 2010. The public-use files of the National Immunization Survey (NIS-Child) were used to evaluate temporal trends surrounding the public

The protective power of dissent? A longitudinal study on cognitive and socio-emotional determinants of COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy among young people in Canada.

COVID-19 has elicited polarized reactions to public health measures, fueling anti-vaccination movements worldwide which indicate that vaccine hesitancy represents a common expression of dissent. We investigate changes in cognitive (i.e., trust in government, conspiracy beliefs, vaccine attitudes, and other COVID-19-related factors) and socio-emotional factors (i.e., psychological distress and social support) over time, and examine if these factors are associated with COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy. A sample of Canadian young adults (N = 2,695; 18 to 40 years old) responded to an online survey in M…

Vaccine hesitancy: Not a new phenomenon, but a new threat.

Vaccines have been recognized as one of the top 10 public health achievements of the 20th century. In 1998, a study on the connection between measles, mumps, rubella vaccine and autism was published by the now discredited Andrew Wakefield. That study was retracted in 2010, but the damage was already done. The purpose of this article is to review the history of vaccine hesitancy and discuss a successful paradigm for speaking with vaccine-hesitant parents. Discussion of immunizations related to public health law and religious exemptions will also be reviewed.

A Case of Atypical Unilateral Optic Neuritis Following BNT162b2 mRNA COVID-19 Vaccination.

BACKGROUND: We report a case of atypical unilateral optic neuritis after receiving the BNT162b2 mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccine. CASE PRESENTATION: An 86-year-old man complained of blurred vision and decreased visual acuity in his right eye 8 days after receiving the second BNT162b2 mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccine and was referred to our hospital. He also had pain with eye movement. Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) in the right eye was 20/200 and critical flicker frequency dropped to 16 Hz. Relative afferent pupillary defect was positive and central scotomas were observed on visual field analysis.

The attitude of Polish women planning pregnancy and/or having children towards vaccinations: a cross-sectional survey study.

OBJECTIVES: Infectious diseases in pregnant women can cause birth defects. Implementing appropriate prevention methods while planning pregnancy can help avoid some of them. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A cross-sectional survey study was performed. The questionnaire investigated attitudes towards vaccinations, as well as opinions on anti-vaccine movements and the so-called "chickenpox parties". The questionnaire was developed for the purpose of this study and the survey was conducted using the google form, which was posted on social media groups for women planning pregnancy, being pregnant or for mot

Threat of COVID-19 Vaccine Hesitancy in Pakistan: The Need for Measures to Neutralize Misleading Narratives.

Immediately after declaring COVID-19 as a pandemic, numerous wild conspiracy theories sprouted through social media. Pakistan is quite vulnerable to such conspiracy narratives and has experienced failures of polio vaccination programs because of such claims. Recently, two well-known political figures raised conspiracy theories against COVID-19 vaccines in Pakistan, stating that COVID-19 is a grand illusion and a conspiracy against Muslim countries. This theory is much discussed in the local community, supporting COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy. We urge healthcare authorities in Pakistan to take nec

SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccinations fail to elicit humoral and cellular immune responses in patients with multiple sclerosis receiving fingolimod.

BACKGROUND: SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccination of healthy individuals is highly immunogenic and protective against severe COVID-19. However, there are limited data on how disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) alter SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccine immunogenicity in patients with autoimmune diseases. METHODS: As part of a prospective cohort study, we investigated the induction, stability and boosting of vaccine-specific antibodies, B cells and T cells in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) on different DMTs after homologous primary, secondary and booster SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccinations. Of 126 patients with MS an

The prevalence and nature of anti-vaccination legislation in ten midwestern states: Implications for public health and policy.

Legislative proposals that could lower vaccination rates pose a threat to public health in the United States. We tracked and analyzed anti-vaccination bills proposed in the legislatures of ten Midwestern states from 2013 to 2024. We used the LegiScan database to search for bills, and three researchers independently classified each identified bill. We classified 374 bills as anti-vaccination bills. The legislative sessions during 2021-2022 saw 222 anti-vaccination bills proposed, mostly concerning COVID-19 vaccination. During 2023-2024, 101 bills were proposed; however, these bills were broader

Overestimation of racial ingroup worry about the COVID-19 vaccine and medical racism.

We investigate whether there is pluralistic ignorance-a group-level shared misperception of what other group members are doing, thinking, or feeling-around COVID-19 vaccination and medical racism. We focus on two distinct anti-vaccination movements grounded in distinct racial groups: Black Americans and White Americans. Black American vaccine hesitancy is uniquely grounded in the history and continued reality of medical racism. White American vaccine hesitancy is influenced by factors including social media use, institutional mistrust, and psychological reactance. A Qualtrics panel sample (N =…

Missed vaccinations and critical care admission: all you may wish to know or rediscover-a narrative review.

Most vaccines are so effective that they could lead to the control/elimination of the diseases they target and directly impact on intensive care admissions or complications. This is best illustrated by the use of vaccines against Haemophilus influenzae type b, Streptococcus pneumoniae, zoster, yellow fever, Ebola virus, influenza or measles-but also by third party strategies such as maternal, toddler and care-giver immunization. However, each of these vaccine-induced protection is threatened by insufficient vaccine uptake. Here, we briefly discuss how vaccine hesitancy has led to the resurgenc
