The present study designed to investigate the quantitative distributions in the secondary metabolites and biological activity of sub-fractions obtained successively from water and methanol: dichloromethane (rate 1:1; v:v) solvent decoction of Diplotenia bingolensis aerial parts. The crude extracts were obtained from the aerial parts of the endemic D. bingolensis species refluxing with water and organic solvents. Sub-fractions of water extract were obtained by successive fractionation of the water extract with hexane (WH), dichloromethane (WD), ethyl acetate (WE) and n-butanol (WB), respectivel

Ancient physicians frequently used the resin of Ferula species to treat cancer. Today, some folkloric recipes used for cancer treatment also contain the resin of Ferula species. The dichloromethane extract of the roots of Ferula huber-morathii exhibited cytotoxic activities against COLO 205 (colon), K-562 (lymphoblast), and MCF-7 (breast) cancer cell lines (IC50 = 52 µg/mL, 72 µg/mL, and 20 µg/mL, respectively). Fifteen sesquiterpene coumarin ethers with cytotoxic activity were isolated from the dichloromethane extract of the roots of F. huber-morathii using bioactivity-directed isolation stud

Infectious diseases, including vector-borne and antibiotic-resistant infections, present significant global health challenges, necessitating the exploration of natural alternatives for disease control. In this study, we investigated the essential oil (EO) profile as well as larvicidal and antibacterial properties of two wild Apiaceae species used in Algeria: Daucus carota L. (DCEO) and Foeniculum vulgare Mill. (FVEO). EO was extracted from the aerial parts by steam distillation and analyzed using Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS). Major constituents identified in DCEO were geranyl a…

In order to highlight a possible chemical variability, this research was designed to contrast, for the first time, the chemical profile, antifungal, and insecticidal effects of the oils of three Eryngium species (E. pusillum [E.p.], E. maritimum [E.m.], and E. campestre [E.c.]) found in the wild natively in Tunisia. Hydrodistillation was employed to extract the volatile oils, which were subsequently characterized using gas chromatography (GC) and GC mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Additionally, the assessment of antifungal efficacy of three specimens toward Candida albicans, Candida glabrata, and T

The in vitro and in vivo antioxidant activity of different extracts of leaves and root of parsley (Petroselinum crispum (Mill.) Nym. ex A.W. Hill, Apiaceae) were studied. Free radical scavenging capacity (RSC) was evaluated measuring the scavenging activity on the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazil (DPPH) and OH radicals. Also, the effects on lipid peroxidation (LP) were evaluated. The results obtained showed that all examined extracts act as good scavengers of DPPH and OH radicals and reduce the intensity of LP. The in vivo effects were evaluated on some antioxidant systems (activities of LPx, GSH…

PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to assess the safety and efficacy of Centella asiatica (L.) Urb. [Apiaceae] (CA) as a complementary dietary supplement for glycemic and lipid control in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted at Walailak University Hospital, Thailand. Participants were assigned 1:1 to receive C. asiatica (CA) extract 1,200 mg/day or matched placebo for 6 months. The primary outcome was glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c). Secondary outcomes were fasting plasma glucose, low-density lipopro…

Water celery (Helosciadium nodiflorum, Apiaceae) is a common and invasive hydrophyte occurring in rivers and slow waters of Europe. In the past, it was consumed as a vegetable and spices, but currently it has mostly been abandoned. As a result, this plant produces an unexploited biomass occluding rivers and slow waters. With the aim to valorise water celery as an important biomass source for the development of botanical insecticides, in this work, we investigated the inhibitory effects of the essential oil hydrodistilled from its aerial parts against larvae of the filariasis vector Culex quinq…

Lead is a common environmental pollutant. It can affect several body systems including the central nervous system (CNS). Lead can disrupt the nervous system by different mechanisms including oxidative stress, inflammation, disruption of neurotransmission, and aberrant autophagy. Apiaceous species have been used traditionally as food flavoring and medicine, representing a rich source of bioactive compounds. In the current study, the antioxidant power of four Apiaceous extracts (Foeniculum vulgare L., Pimpinella anisum L., Coriandrum sativum L., and Cuminum cyminum L.) was evaluated. Additionall

Artemisinin is currently used for treating drug-resistant malaria. It is found in Artemisia annua and also in A. apiacea and A. lancea. Artemisia annua and A. apiacea were known to the Chinese in antiquity and, since they were easily confused with each other, both provided plant material for the herbal drug qing hao (blue-green hao). This article shows, however, that since at least the eleventh century Chinese scholars recognized the difference between the two species, and advocated the use of A. apiacea, rather than A. annua for 'treating lingering heat in joints and bones' and 'exhaustion du

Osteosarcoma, which has poor prognosis after metastasis, is the most common type of bone cancer in children and adolescents. Therefore, plant-derived bioactive compounds are being actively developed for cancer therapy. Artemisia apiacea Hance ex Walp. is a traditional medicinal plant native to Eastern Asia, including China, Japan, and Korea. Vitexicarpin (Vitex), derived from A. apiacea, has demonstrated analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antitumour, and immunoregulatory properties; however, there are no published studies on Vitex isolated from the aerial parts of A. apiacea. 'Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum' (Lso) is a phloem-limited bacterium that severely affects important Solanaceae and Apiaceae crops, including potato, tomato, pepper, tobacco, carrot and celery. This bacterium is transmitted to solanaceous species by potato psyllid, Bactericera cockerelli, and to Apiaceae by carrot psyllids, including Trioza apicalis and Bactericera trigonica. Five haplotypes of Lso have so far been described, two are associated with solanaceous species and potato psyllids, whereas the other three are associated with carrot and celery crops and carrot psyllids. Little is …

Cimifugin (11.25% yield, 96.5% purity) was isolated for the first time from P. schottii and characterized by NMR spectroscopy. Cimifugin and the crude DCM extract were evaluated using ELISA microtiter assays…

The most well-known cause of phytophotodermatitis in Denmark is accidental contact with plants belonging to the Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), such as hodgweed (Heracleum spondylium). However, many other plants with furocoumarins (psoralens) may induce the same kind of reaction. We describe a case of phytophotodermatitis caused by Dictamnus alba, gas plant or burning bush also known from the Bible as the "burning bush of Moses".
