OBJECTIVES: Argon laser stapedotomy is a new modality for the treatment of otosclerosis. The first results obtained in Denmark are reported.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective follow-up study was undertaken to evaluate the results of argon laser stapedotomy which was introduced in 1991 at the department of Otolaryngology, Rigshospitalet, Copenhagen. The results are based on 85 consecutive primary stapedotomy operations with argon laser in 76 patients during the period January 1, 1991 to June 30, 1996. Mean follow-up was 16.6 months (6-60).

Three patients with granuloma faciale were successfully treated by argon laser therapy. The intense blue-green laser light is readily absorbed by these inflammatory lesions, resulting in resolution of the clinical and microscopic abnormalities. There were no recurrences during follow-up periods of 23, 21, and 5 months, respectively. Argon laser therapy appears to be an important addition to the treatment armamentarium for this uncommon, but difficult to treat, entity.

Chronic radiation proctitis is a relatively common late complication of pelvic irradiation. The main symptoms are diarrhea, urgency, tenesmus, and rectal bleeding. Argon laser peripheral iridoplasty is a useful procedure to eliminate appositional angle closure resulting from mechanisms other than pupillary block. PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy of an argon laser in the ablation of benign conjunctival pigmented nevi.
DESIGN: Interventional case series.
METHODS: We conducted argon laser ablations for conjunctival pigmented nevus in 30 eyes of 28 patients. Laser ablation was applied directly to the conjunctival pigmented nevus in all patients. All patients were followed up over a period of 12 months.

A 26-year-old woman with a congenital port-wine stain on the forehead was treated three times at 2-month intervals with an argon laser. Argon laser photocoagulation was performed on 30 patients with ocular histoplasmosis syndrome involving the macula. Selection of patients for photocoagulation was dependent upon locating the sub-retinal neovascularization (SRNV) at least one vein-width removed from the capillary-free zone of the fovea on fluorescein angiography. Of the 30 treated patients, 27 maintained or improved visual acuity an average of 1 1/2 years following photocoagulation.

Rubeosis iridis developed in the right eye of a 10-year-old boy with Marfan's syndrome.
