Dengue is a viral infection transmitted by mosquitoes that causes fever, headache, joint pain, nausea, vomiting, and pain behind the eyes. In severe cases, it can progress to dengue hemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome, which can be life-threatening. Armenia has not reported a single case of dengue to date and is non-endemic for this disease. However, it has been found that the vector of the disease, Aedes albopictus, is present in Armenia since 2016. The aim of this report is to present the imported case of suspected dengue hemorrhagic fever. A 23-year-old female who was admitted to th…

BACKGROUND: Since the 90s' Echinococcus multilocularis infection has expanded the geographical area and central-eastern European countries had seen first alveolar echinococcosis (AE) human cases. AE is considered to be a very rare disease in Europe with average incidences of 0.03-0.2/100,000 inhabitants/year. Because of a suitable orography, this study aims to confirm whether there are human AE cases in Armenia, identify areas at risk, and also estimate AE annual incidence.
METHODS: Retrospective AE case finding was carried out at main multi-profile medical centers equipped with the modern di…

BackgroundIt is known that one of the reasons for the increased incidence of hematological malignancies is caused by the growth of multiple myeloma (MM). Worldwide, approximately 159,985 new cases of MM are diagnosed representing 0.9% of all cancer diagnoses and 106,105 patients will die from MM accounting for 1.1% of all cancer deaths per year. Despite significant advances in the MM treatment the mortality rates are still high. The presented study is the first accurate epidemiological study of ММ in Armenia for the period of 2006-2018.MethodsThe initial data for this retrospective cohort surv…

We assessed the risk for toxoplasmosis in 10 school restaurants in Armenia (Quindio, Colombia). We analyzed the presence of Toxoplasma gondii DNA in the food, water, and living and inert surfaces of school restaurants, and we correlated these findings with the results of food safety inspection scores and with the prevalence of specific anti-T. gondii antibodies in children who ate at these restaurants. Of the 213 samples, 6.1% were positive using PCR to test for T. gondii DNA. Positive samples were found in meat, water, cucumber, guava juice, inert surfaces, and living surfaces. In 60% (6/10) …

BACKGROUND: Neonatal thyrotropin (TSH) is influenced not only by the infant's own thyroid function, but also by maternal thyroid status, and can thus provide a general index of thyroid health in the community.
METHODS: In 2012, the Republic of Armenia implemented a program of universal neonatal hypothyroidism screening by means of measuring the serum TSH level. The Arabkir Medical Center in Yerevan, Armenia, has maintained records of neonatal TSH screening data comprising nearly 100% of all births in Armenia from 2012 through 2016. We analyzed these data to determine the frequency of neonatal…

Squeezed syndrome affecting various segments of limbs has been identified in 245 of 500 victims randomized for examination 6 months after the earthquake. In 119 cases associated with closed fractures of long tubular bones and in 59 cases with open ones. In 124 cases duration of squeezing was up to 12 h, and in 70 cases--1 day and more. Segmental limb amputation was performed in 113 cases. In 95 cases limbs functions were retained and in 81--lost. Perspectives of more successful outcomes depend on the maximal shortening of rescue period, on rational organization of the treatment process and pro

BACKGROUND: 18F-prostate-specific membrane antigen (18F-PSMA-1007) is a recognized positron emission tomography (PET) radiotracer commonly used for prostate tumor imaging due to its excellent tumor-to-background contrast and advantageous pharmacokinetics. Although 18F-PSMA-1007 has been extensively manufactured and used in many countries, it has not been available in Armenia until now. The aim of this work is to synthesize 18F-PSMA-1007 for the first time in Armenia for local clinical implementation and to demonstrate the reproducibility of the process.
OBJECTIVES: Based on this, the objectiv…

Armenia, an ex-Soviet Republic in transition since independence in 1991, has made remarkable strides in development. The crisis of prioritization that has plagued many post-Soviet republics in transition has meant differential growth in varied sectors in Armenia. Emergency systems is one of the sectors which is neglected in the current drive to modernize. The legacy of the Soviet Semashko system has left a void in specialized care including emergency care. This manuscript is a descriptive overview of the current state of emergency care in Armenia using in-depth key informant interviews and rev…

In 1994, the first indigenous case of malaria since the 1960s was reported in Armenia, and the number of cases quickly increased in the ensuing years. In 1998, a roll-back malaria program was developed to eliminate the recently established foci of malaria infection and to prevent the reestablishment of malaria in Armenia. As part of this program, we carried out entomological surveys to identify the potential malaria vectors in the Ararat Valley, the area where most of the indigenous malaria cases had been reported. In particular, we attempted to ascertain the presence of Anopheles sacharovi Fa…

The global dissemination of Klebsiella pneumoniae pathotypes with multidrug-resistant (MDR) and hypervirulent traits poses a threat to public health. The situation in Armenia is unclear, and we performed a comprehensive characterisation of 48 clinical isolates of K. pneumoniae, collected from 2018 to 2024. The majority of the isolates (64.58%) were extensively drug-resistant (XDR) and MDR. Genomic analysis of 21 isolates revealed the presence of international high-risk MDR clones (ST395, ST15, and ST307). The ST395 strains were isolated from children and resisted the first-line drugs such as b…

Tularemia, a life-threatening zoonotic infection caused by Francisella tularensis, is a significant public health concern. Diagnosis can be challenging due to nonspecific symptoms, including fever, tonsillitis, and lymphadenopathy. We present the case of a 48-year-old male from a rural area of the Tavush region admitted to our hospital, initially presenting with left-sided tonsillitis, followed by the development of enlarged lymph nodes in the neck and a mild fever. Despite initial treatment with amoxicillin, tularemia was confirmed through positive serological tests, including antibody titers
