BACKGROUND: Metal poisonings through a mucocutaneous route are reported rarely in the literature.
METHODS: We report 2 cases of heavy metal intoxication from inappropriate use of Chinese mineral medicines confirmed by toxicologic investigations.
RESULTS: A 51-year-old man developed perianal gangrene and a high fever after a 2-week anal use of hong-dan herbal mixtures for anal fistula. He presented gastrointestinal and constitutional symptoms, followed by skin rash, anemia, hair loss, peripheral neuropathy, and muscle atrophy. Elevated urine arsenic and mercury confirmed the heavy metal poiso

A 30-year-old man and a 39-year-old woman, who was 28 weeks pregnant, were simultaneously poisoned by eating chocolate containing arsenic trioxide. They developed a picture of multiple organ failure peaking around the 8th to 10th day after ingestion, with the development of life-threatening adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in both patients. This rarely reported complication of arsenic poisoning was managed successfully by intubation and mechanical ventilation with positive end expiratory pressure in both patients. Hemodynamic and laboratory data are presented supporting the clinical …

Arsenic poisoning from groundwater has caused serious health hazards to the exposed population globally. The human body is contaminated by arsenic through drinking water and food, causing skin manifestations, neurological disorders, gastrointestinal disorders, cancer, etc. In the present study, a total of n = 286 household handpump water samples and food consumed (wheat and rice) by the studied subjects and each household member's biological samples (hair and nail) were collected for arsenic quantification. The hazard quotient (HQ) and cancer risk (CR) study was evaluated in the exposed studie…

Since 1990, a large number of people have been experiencing various health problems from drinking arsenic contaminated water (50-1860 microg/L) in 13 counties of Inner Mongolia, China, most of which are located in the Hetao Plain area. It is calculated that 411,243 people are currently at risk from arsenic poisoning. Clinical and epidemiological investigations were carried out on 13,021 people to ascertain the nature and degree of morbidity that occurred due to chronic arsenic toxicity. In all of the studied patients, 22% had typical hyperkeratosis on the palms or soles and some had raindrop-l…

A 39-year-old woman was hospitalized for nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and weakness of unknown etiology. Her condition progressively deteriorated and she developed multiple organ failure and tetraplegia. The diagnosis of inorganic arsenic poisoning was established by measurements of arsenic in urine and serum, showing 2,000 microg/L (normal < 10 microg/L) and 290 mug/Kg (normal < 2 microg/Kg), respectively. Hair arsenic was 57 mg/kg (normal < 0.2 mg/kg). Chelating therapy with 2.3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) 600 mg three times daily was given for a period of 45 days with three abruption perio…

Arsenic poisoning was diagnosed in a 26-year-old man who had been criminally intoxicated over the last two weeks preceding admission by the surreptitious oral administration of probably 10 g of arsenic trioxide (As2O3). The patient developed severe manifestations of toxic hepatitis and pancreatitis, and thereafter neurological disorders, respiratory distress, acute renal failure, and cardiovascular disturbances. In addition to supportive therapy, extrarenal elimination techniques and chelating agents were used. Dimercaprol (BAL) and dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA or succimer) were used simultan…

WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE: Massive acute arsenic poisoning is rare yet potentially life-threatening. 2,3-dimercaptopropane-1-sulphonate (DMPS) appears to have the appropriate chelating property. However, clinical experience on the use of DMPS in massive arsenic poisoning is limited.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 37-year-old woman attempted suicide by ingesting 37.5 g of arsenic trioxide. DMPS was promptly initiated based on history and clinical symptoms. The patient recovered completely, with no complications or side effects of the therapy.
WHAT IS NEW AND CONCLUSION: TDMPS is useful for the treatme…

BACKGROUND: Heavy metal poisoning can cause debilitating illness if left untreated, and its management in anuric patients poses challenges. Literature with which to guide clinical practice in this area is rather scattered.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of symptomatic lead and arsenic poisoning from use of Ayurvedic medicine in a 28-year-old man with end-stage kidney disease on chronic hemodialysis. We describe his treatment course with chelating agents and extracorporeal blood purification, and review the relevant literature to provide general guidance.
CONCLUSION: Cumulative clinical…

Arsenic and its compounds cause adverse health effects in humans. Current treatment employs administration of thiol chelators, such as meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) and sodium 2,3-dimercaptopropane 1-sulfonate (DMPS), which facilitate its excretion from the body. However, these chelating agents are compromised by number of limitations due to their lipophobic nature, particularly in case of chronic poisoning. Combination therapy is a new approach to ensure enhanced removal of metal from the body, reduced doses of potentially toxic chelators, and no redistribution of metal from one org

Arsenic is a prevalent and significant cause of poisoning worldwide, leading to both acute and chronic toxicity. The life-threatening nature of arsenic toxicity is evident in its link to fatal health conditions in different parts and systems of the body. We aimed to conduct a systematic review of the existing literature on long-term health outcomes following arsenic poisoning during infancy. Following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines, we systematically searched the PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Cochrane, and Web of Science databases from their inception up to May 2025. The final selection included seven s…

Without intervention, the natural wound healing process can often result in scarring, which can have detrimental effects on both the physical and mental well-being of patients. Therefore, it is crucial to develop biomaterials that can promote healing without scarring. Regulating the Yes-associated protein-1/PDZ-binding motif (YAP/TAZ) signaling pathway is possible to reduce excessive fibrosis of fibroblasts and proliferation of vascular endothelial cells, ultimately impacting scar formation. Arsenic trioxide (ATO), an ancient drug with medicinal and toxic properties, has shown promise in regul

BACKGROUND: Arsenic poisoning interferes with bone metabolism in laboratory animal studies, and human studies suggest lowered bone mass density at elevated exposures. As the long-term consequences of developmental arsenic toxicity are poorly known, we carried out a clinical pilot study of survivors of the mass arsenic poisoning of bottle-fed infants in Japan in 1955.
OBJECTIVES: The purpose was to evaluate the association between developmental arsenic exposure and physical stature and routine blood chemistry reflecting major organ functions more than 50 years later.
METHODS: The study sample…
