Listeriosis in Austria--report of an outbreak in 1986.

In 1986 Listeria monocytogenes was isolated from various specimens of 28 patients in Austria: 24 were newborn infants, 4 patients were adults (25-73 years). All four adult patients and five of 20 mothers had consumed unpasteurized milk. Nine of 20 mothers and two of four adult patients had received vegetables from biologic agriculture. The consumption of raw milk and biologically grown vegetables as possible source of infection cannot be dismissed. The fatality rate (5 of 28) was remarkably low; in our experience there was no difference in the therapeutic outcome between the use of a combinati…

[The 1984/85 rubella epidemic in Austria].

As a consequence of the rubella epidemic in Austria in 1979, prophylaxis against this disease was intensified. In spite of this measure, however, there was an increase in cases of rubella in 1984/85. The peak incidence in both years occurred in May. In 1984, most cases were found in Vienna, Lower and Upper Austria, and Salzburg, whereas in 1985, Styria and Vienna were most affected. The clinical diagnosis of rubella was confirmed serologically in 685 patients. Of these, 151 were pregnant women and 104 were women of childbearing age who gave no information as to pregnancy. Due to the virtually …

Autochthonous Human Dirofilaria repens Infection in Austria.

PURPOSE: This report describes a rare autochthonous case of human D. repens infection in Austria. Dirofilariosis is a mosquito-borne parasitic infection that predominantly affects dogs. Human D. repens infections have primarily been reported in Mediterranean countries, but are emerging throughout Central and Northern Europe. METHODS: The worm was removed surgically and identified using PCR and DNA sequencing. The consensus sequences were compared against reference sequences of Dirofilaria repens from GenBank. RESULTS: The 56-year-old woman acquired the infection, which presented as a subcuta…

Ongoing rubella outbreak in Austria, 2008-2009.

Since October 2008, a total of 143 cases of rubella have affected the two Austrian provinces Styria and Burgenland. The index case occurred in mid-October 2008, but was not notified to the public health authorities until February 2009, when the Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety was asked to investigate a cluster of 32 rubella cases (24 laboratory-confirmed and eight clinically suspected cases). No case of rubella had been reported in the two affected provinces between February 2007 - when statutory notification for rubella was implemented - and mid-October 2008. 113 of the 143 cases (…

[Ambulatory rehabilitation after myocardial infarct in Austria].

Cardiac rehabilitation after myocardial infarction has a positive effect on the patient's quality of life and on the prognosis of the disease as well. The cost-saving effect is of importance from the socioeconomical viewpoint. A measurable benefit of such rehabilitation programs can only be achieved by long-term comprehensive care, however. Therefore a hospital rehabilitation program should be followed by regular participation in a long-term community rehabilitation program. The network of cardiac rehabilitation centres in Austria is highly developed and consequently it is possible for every i…

Unexpected increase of alveolar echincoccosis, Austria, 2011.

In Central Europe, classical alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is endemic. Annual incidences in Austria were 2.4 and 2.8 cases/100,000 population during 1991-2000 and 2001-2010, respectively. Hence, the registration of 13 new AE patients in 2011 was unexpected. Increasing fox populations and past AE underreporting might have caused this increase.

Usutu virus activity in Austria, 2001-2002.

Usutu virus (USUV), a member of the mosquito-borne clade within the Flaviviridae family, was responsible for avian mortality in Austria in 2001. In 2002, the virus continued to kill birds, predominantly blackbirds. High numbers of avian deaths were recorded within the city of Vienna and in surrounding districts of the federal state of Lower Austria, while single die-offs were noticed in the federal states of Styria and Burgenland. A total of 72 birds were submitted for laboratory examination, 30 of which tested positive for USUV by immunohistochemistry and/or polymerase chain reaction. Laborat…

Assisted suicide in Austria: implications for media reporting.

Assisted suicide is an emerging phenomenon in many western countries including Austria, with important implications for public mental health. From a suicide prevention and public health standpoint, it is essential that assisted suicide should neither be stigmatized nor romanticized or presented as the only option to address existential suffering. Balanced reporting is key to educate the public about available options at the end of life including palliative care.

Occupational injuries in orthopedic and trauma surgeons in Austria.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency and type of injuries during the career of orthopedic and trauma surgeons in Austria. The hypothesis was that the percentage of occupational injuries among orthopedic and trauma surgeons aligns with the incidence reported in the United States, thus indicating the need for a workplace prevention program. METHODS: A web-based survey was created to collect all necessary data and was sent to all orthopedic and trauma surgeons in Austria via e-mail. Relevant parameters included the surgeons' age, work experience, severity of pain, t…

The Environmental Spread of Aspergillus terreus in Tyrol, Austria.

Fungal infections due to Aspergillus species have become a major cause of morbidity and mortality among immunocompromised patients. At the Medical University of Innsbruck, A. terreus and related species are the second most common causative agents of aspergillosis. In this one-year study we collected environmental samples to investigate (i) the environmental distribution, (ii) the ecological niche of A. terreus in Tyrol, (iii) the genetic relatedness of environmental and clinical isolates and the correlation between those two groups of isolates, and (iv) the antifungal susceptibility patterns.

Human dirofilariosis in Austria: the past, the present, the future.

BACKGROUND: Dirofilariosis is a vector-borne parasitosis caused by filarial nematodes of the genus Dirofilaria. In humans, who represent accidental hosts, dirofilariosis is mostly caused by Dirofilaria repens and Dirofilaria immitis. In Austria, the first reported case occurred in 1978. Since then, several (case) reports have been published. METHODS: A systematic and retrospective review of collected published cases and new, unpublished confirmed cases of human dirofilariosis occurring in Austria was performed. A nematode was extracted from the eyelid of a previously unreported case and subse…

Epidemiology and economic burden of fragility fractures in Austria.

UNLABELLED: Fragility fractures are a frequent and costly event. In Austria, 92,835 fragility fractures occurred in patients aged ≥ 50 years in 2018, accruing direct costs of > 157 million €. Due to demographic aging, the number of fragility fractures and their associated costs are expected to increase even further. INTRODUCTION: Fragility fractures are frequently associated with long hospital stays, loss of independence, and increased need for care in the elderly, with consequences often leading to premature death. The aim of this study was to estimate the number of fragility fractures and a…
