The authors describe a case of nontraumatic atlantoaxial dislocation secondary to acute rheumatic fever, in which there appeared to be fibrous fusion between the axis and the atlas in the subluxed position. The dislocation was reduced by means of combined traction and steroid therapy. Fibrous fusion occurred in the realigned position after immobilization.

During the past 30 years various treatment protocols for hangman's fractures have been attempted. In order to guide the management of hangman's fractures, different classifications have been introduced. However, opinions on operative or nonoperative treatment have not yet been solidified. To evaluate both conservative and operative management of hangman's fractures in the published literature and to provide appropriate guidelines for treatment of hangman's fractures, a systematic review of the literature regarding the management of hangman's fractures was performed. An English literature searc

A retrospective analysis of 165 patients admitted to Hermann Hospital with acute injuries of the axis vertebra revealed 68 (41%) dens fractures, 62 (38%) cases of traumatic spondylolisthesis ("hangman's" fracture), 21 (13%) extension teardrop fractures, 10 (6%) hyperextension dislocations, and 2 (1.0%) fractures each of the laminae and spinous processes. Of the 68 dens fractures, none (0%) were of the Anderson and D'Alonzo Type I; 21 (31%) were Type II ("high"); and 47 (69%) were Type III ("low"). The 62 traumatic spondylolistheses included 13 (21%) Effendi type I, 35 (56%) type II and 3 (5%)

OBJECTIVE: This study had 3 objectives: to compare bone mineral density (BMD) from 3 axial slices, subchondral trabecular bone 2 mm inferior to the cranial endplate, middle of the vertebral body, and subchondral trabecular bone 2 mm superior to the caudal endplate; assess BMD variations and correlations of C1-T1 vertebrae; and correlate BMD with clinical outcomes and cervical sagittal parameters in patients undergoing anterior cervical discectomy and fusion.
METHODS: The study enrolled 71 patients who underwent anterior cervical discectomy and fusion between March 2017 and January 2020. Patie

Studies on the relationship between body posture and craniofacial parameters often focus on the cervical spine. Thus, less attention has been paid to the morphology of the vertebra C2 that serves as both a structural and functional link between the craniofacial area and the other part of the spine. The objective of this study was to assess the relation of craniofacial features to certain morphological and positional characteristics of the cervical vertebrae and the spine during growth. We determined body posture indices for 69 children and adolescents by means of a radiation-free method (raste

The transoral approach to the upper cervical spine is an established but little used route, offering excellent access with good wound healing, to lesions of the bodies of the atlas, axis and upper part of the third cervical vertebra. The authors report four cases which demonstrate the value of the procedure.
