Comparison of three diagnostic methods to identify subclinical endometritis in mares.

The objective of this study was to compare the accuracy of a uterine swab (US), a cytological brush (CB) and an endometrial biopsy (EB) to detect subclinical endometritis in mares. Cytological and bacteriological results of all three techniques were related to histological occurrence of polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNs) in the stratum compactum, commonly known as 'best standard'; to diagnose endometritis. Samples were taken from 55 mares of different breeds without clinical signs of endometritis. Samples for US, CB and EB were collected, smeared on a microscopic slide and cultured for bacte

Bacteriology of maxillary sinusitis in relation to quality of the retained secretion.

The bacteriological findings in 200 patients with acute maxillary sinusitis are reported. It is concluded that the sampling technique--by antral aspiration--is highly significant in the evaluation of the bacteriological background of sinusitis, whereas the anerobic transport of the sample seems to be of less importance. By aspiration the purulent secretion can be properly separated from the non-purulent secretion. Pneumococci, H. influenzae and anaerobic bacteria can be isolated in about 90% of the patients with true sinus empyema, while sterile conditions are rare.

Modification and evaluation of Brucella broth based Campylobacter jejuni transport medium.

Reliable transport of Campylobacter jejuni isolates is critical to microbial epidemiology research, especially in developing countries without a good temperature control mailing system. Various factors, including oxygen, temperature, transport medium composition, could affect the survival of C. jejuni. In this study, the protective effects of different ingredients in C. jejuni transport media at 4 °C and 25 °C and under aerobic condition were quantitatively evaluated respectively. The results showed that enriched medium, supplementation with 5% blood and being kept at 4 °C could improve the vi

[Comparative study of the biological properties of various nutrient media used for the isolation of Legionella pneumophila].

Three diagnostic selective media used for the isolation of Legionella pneumophila were compared. These included BCYEAalpha (Oxoid, a reference medium), BCYEAalpha (Hi Media), and elective legionellosis medium (ELM) developed at the Rostov-on-Don Research Institute for Plague Control. The virulent L. pneumophila strain Philadelphia-1 (LD50 was 10(5) CFU for guinea-pigs) was used a test culture. The susceptibility of the media was determined, by culturing 10(-6) and 10(-7) dilutions of the suspension of the macerated Legionella-infected guinea-pig spleen, as well as the suspension of a culture o

[Evaluation of Vitek 2 performance for identifying extended spectrum beta-lactamases in Enterobacteriaceae "other than Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis and Klebsiella spp"].

Production of beta-lactamases is the main resistance mechanism of gram-negative bacteria against beta-lactam antibiotics. Extended spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) have the ability to hydrolyze a broader spectrum of beta-lactam drugs. Hence rapid, accurate detection of this resistance mechanism is extremely important to guide proper patient antimicrobial therapy. These enzymes are most commonly produced by Klebsiella spp. and Escherichia coli, but may also occur widely in other gram-negative bacteria, including Enterobacter spp., Proteus spp., Morganella morganii, Providencia stuartii, Serrati

[Resuscitation from the viable but nonculturable state of Helicobacter pylori].

It is well known that the change of state from the culturable to not culturable on pathogenic organisms could easily occurred. These states of bacteria were so called viable but nonculturable (VNC). The coccoid form of H. pylori is seems to be in this state. The possibility of resuscitation of H. pylori was examined in vitro. The coccoid form bacteria was treated with Ammonium Sulfate and heat shock before culture, and cultured in Brucella broth containing, sodium pyruvate, laked human erythrocyte and serum. The growth of the rod spiral form was found in the coccoid form bacteria, and further

Detection of bacteraemia by the continuously monitoring BacT/Alert system.

AIMS: To analyse a continuously monitoring blood culture system with respect to the time to detection of various groups of organisms, their clinical importance, and the relative efficacy of the aerobic and anaerobic bottles. METHODS: Four thousand blood cultures were monitored and the information relating to the positive cultures was noted and analysed. RESULTS: Four hundred and seventy seven blood cultures were detected as positive, 81% (387/477) of which were detected within 48 hours. The most pathogenic organisms were detected in the shortest period, less pathogenic later and those genera

Cultural diagnosis of chancroid.

Culture of Haemophilus ducreyi remains the definitive way to diagnose chancroid. Since its discovery in 1889, cultural isolation of this fastidious organism has been a challenge for clinicians and microbiologists. A recent chancroid epidemic in our locale prompted a review of available culture techniques. Despite the development of various selective solid media in the last 20 years, cultural diagnosis of chancroid remains problematic. Many pitfalls may complicate this procedure, such as concomitant syphilis, syphilis, or herpes progenitalis simulating chancroid, strain differences in nutrition

Effect of altered headspace atmosphere on yield and speed of detection of the Oxoid Signal blood culture system versus the BACTEC radiometric system.

The one-bottle Oxoid Signal blood culture system altered to provide a more aerobic bottle headspace was reassessed in a comparative study versus the two-bottle BACTEC radiometric system in 5,426 blood cultures. The BACTEC system detected more microorganisms (P less than 0.02), particularly anaerobes (P less than 0.05) and fungi (P less than 0.05).

Evaluation of the Mini-ID Enterobacteriaceae screen system.

A total of 932 typical and atypical enteric fermenters were used to evaluate the Mini-ID Enterobacteriaceae Screen/Identification System. At 4 h, final identifications were available for only 13.3%, but an additional 71% were screened into the correct group, according to the product's database. At 24 h, 58.8% were correctly identified to the species level, often with the use of an additional tube. When 118 of the cultures were arranged into a weighted assortment, as might be found in a clinical laboratory, 35 were definitively identified at 4 h, and another 72 were screened into the correct gr
