Chronic basophilic leukemia (CBL) is an extremely rare type of leukemia. A literature review revealed six cases reported as primary CBL and five patients with secondary CBL. Patients with primary CBL may present with symptoms not related to leukemia. Dysplastic changes in peripheral blood and bone marrow were described and demonstrated in cases of primary and secondary CBL. Rat basophilic leukemia (RBL) cells, decorated with IgE, have been shown to bind irreversibly to antigen-coated substrates. In this paper we measured RBL cell deformability and demonstrated that this irreversible binding is not due to a compliant cellular rheology of these cells. A case of acute nonlymphocytic leukemia (ANLL) with primitive basophilic differentiation is presented. The patient had no antecedent history or concomitant presence of chronic myelogenous leukemia. Schaumann bodies are the inclusion bodies usually seen in sarcoidosis, but can also be found in other conditions like tuberculosis, chronic beryllium diseases and Crohn's diseases. An 81-year-old woman with Ph1-positive chronic myelogenous leukemia developed blast crisis four years after diagnosis of the disease.
