Examining neuropsychiatric symptoms and functional decline in behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia.

AIM: Neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) are core features of behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD), but their association with functional decline is incompletely understood. METHODS: Participants (N = 219) were individuals enrolled in Alzheimer's Disease Research Centers between 2005 and 2024 with early-stage bvFTD (CDR ≤ 0.5). Functional status was coded as a binary variable based on the Functional Activities Questionnaire. Behavioral data were derived from the Neuropsychiatric Inventory Questionnaire and Clinician Judgement of Symptoms. Descriptive statistics and Cox proportional

Behavioral and psychological symptoms in institutional residents with dementia in Taiwan.

AIM: Behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) are important predictors for institutional placement, caregiver distress and depression for patients with dementia. We aim to investigate BPSD in institutional residents with dementia in Taiwan. METHODS: We conducted a nationwide study surveying institutional residents in Taiwan. Institutional residents from 22 counties and cities in Taiwan were recruited and analyzed in our study. We recorded demographic data, severity of dementia and disability, presence of BPSD, and past medical history of institutional residents in Taiwan. We r

Behavioral mediators of stress-related mood symptoms in adolescence & young adulthood.

BACKGROUND: Stress is a risk factor for unipolar and bipolar mood disorders, but the mechanisms linking stress to specific symptoms remain elusive. Behavioral responses to stress, such as impulsivity and social withdrawal, may mediate the associations between stress and particular mood symptoms. METHODS: This study evaluated behavioral mediators of the relationship between self-reported intensity of daily stress and mood symptoms over up to eight weeks of daily diary surveys. The sample included individuals with unipolar or bipolar disorders, or with no psychiatric history (n = 113, ages 15-2

Prevalence of behavioral disorders in patients with vonoprazan-refractory reflux symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Behavioral disorders, such as supragastric belching (SGB) and rumination syndrome (RS), which may be treated by cognitive behavioral therapy, are common in patients with reflux symptoms refractory to proton pump inhibitors (PPI). Vonoprazan (VPZ) has been used as a new type of acid inhibitor in Japan since 2015. We herein investigated the prevalence of behavioral disorders in patients with VPZ-refractory reflux symptoms and attempted to identify predictive factors. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed esophagogastroduodenograms, high-resolution manometry, and 24-h multiluminal imp

An alcohol withdrawal test battery measuring multiple behavioral symptoms in mice.

Despite acceptance that risk for alcohol-use disorder (AUD) has a large genetic component, the identification of genes underlying various components of risk for AUD has been hampered in humans, in part by the heterogeneity of expression of the phenotype. One aspect of AUD is physical dependence. Alcohol withdrawal is a serious consequence of alcohol dependence with multiple symptoms, many of which are seen in multiple species, and can be experienced over a wide-ranging time course. In the present three studies, we developed a battery of withdrawal tests in mice, examining behavioral symptoms f…

Treatment of behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia: a systematic review.

BPSD (Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms in Dementia) affects virtually all patients with dementia. The aim of this review is to present information on epidemiology, consequences and evidence-based non-pharmacological and pharmacological treatment approaches. The review also covers recent literature derived from a systematic literature Medline search on BPSD. Results indicate that BPSD are major risk factors for an earlier placement of affected individuals in nursing homes and a potentially more severe course of dementia over time. Treatment of BPSD is complex and includes both strategies.

Automated Tracking and Quantification of Autistic Behavioral Symptoms Using Microsoft Kinect.

The prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has risen significantly in the last ten years, and today, roughly 1 in 68 children has been diagnosed. One hallmark set of symptoms in this disorder are stereotypical motor movements. These repetitive movements may include spinning, body-rocking, or hand-flapping, amongst others. Despite the growing number of individuals affected by autism, an effective, accurate method of automatically quantifying such movements remains unavailable. This has negative implications for assessing the outcome of ASD intervention and drug studies. Here we present a

Cancer-related intrusive thoughts predict behavioral symptoms following breast cancer treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Behavioral symptoms are common in breast cancer survivors, including disturbances in energy, sleep, and mood, though few risk factors for these negative outcomes have been identified. Our study examined intrusive thoughts as a predictor of lingering symptoms in breast cancer survivors in the year following treatment. METHOD: Data come from the Moving Beyond Cancer psychoeducational intervention trial, aimed at easing the transition from patient to survivor. Women (n = 558) completed psychosocial questionnaires within 4 weeks posttreatment and again 2, 6, and 12 months later. We exa…

Behavioral and emotional symptoms of post-institutionalized children in middle childhood.

BACKGROUND: Experience in institutional/orphanage care has been linked to increased mental health problems. Research suggests that children adopted from institutions experience specific difficulties related to inattention/overactivity. Evidence of internalizing and conduct problems relative to non-adopted peers has been found in early childhood and early adolescence, but problems may not differ from other adopted children. This study clarifies the understanding of behavioral and emotional symptoms of post-institutionalized (PI) children during middle childhood. METHODS: Eight- to eleven-year-

Behavioral activation, inhibition and mood symptoms in early-onset bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Hypomania/mania and depression are hypothesized to correspond to high and low expressions of behavioral activation system (BAS) activity, respectively, in bipolar individuals. In contrast, behavioral inhibition system (BIS) activity is hypothesized to regulate anxiety. The aim of the present study was to examine whether self-reported levels of BAS functioning in bipolar adolescents corresponded with levels of concurrent manic and depressive symptomatology. The secondary aim was to investigate whether self-reported BIS levels were associated with self-reported anxiety symptoms. MET

Pharmacologic treatment of behavioral symptoms in autism and pervasive developmental disorders.

Autism and other pervasive developmental disorders (PDDs) are associated with various dysfunctional and problematic behaviors, in addition to the core features of language and social skills dysfunction that define these conditions. Although there is currently no pharmacologic cure for the core features of PDDs, some of the behavioral symptoms may be treated pharmacologically. In addition to relieving some of the daily stress in the lives of patients and their families, improvement of these behavioral symptoms, which include hyperactivity, aggression, tantrums, and self-injury, removes some of …

Behavioral activation and lack of concern, core symptoms of anorexia nervosa?

OBJECTIVE: The core symptoms of anorexia nervosa have remained points of debate. The goal of this paper is a close study of unexpected and paradoxical symptoms in anorexia nervosa which are described in the literature but which, for the most part, have escaped the attention of investigator. METHOD: Following a brief examination of psychological influences: developmental psychodynamics issues, psychiatric comorbidity and personality features, as well as the physical consequences of starvation, all of which are considered probable contributors to the pathological process, the symptoms of denial

Behavioral symptoms, depression symptoms, and medication use in Michigan nursing home residents with dementia during COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic significantly disrupted nursing home (NH) care, including visitation restrictions, reduced staffing levels, and changes in routine care. These challenges may have led to increased behavioral symptoms, depression symptoms, and central nervous system (CNS)-active medication use among long-stay NH residents with dementia. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, cross-sectional study including Michigan long-stay (≥100 days) NH residents aged ≥65 with dementia based on Minimum Data Set (MDS) assessments from January 1, 2018 to June 30, 2021. Residents with schizoph…

Dysphoric symptoms in relation to other behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia, among elderly in nursing homes.

BACKGROUND: Behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) are common and varied in the elderly. The aim of the current study was to explore associations between BPSD and dysphoric symptoms at different levels of cognitive impairment. METHODS: Assessments of 4397 elderly individuals living in nursing homes in Sweden were performed. Data on cognitive function and BPSD were collected using the Multi-Dimensional Dementia Assessment Scale (MDDAS). The relationships between dysphoria and eight BPSD factors were plotted against cognitive function to investigate how dysphoria affects BPSD

Behavioral characteristics of toddlers later identified with an autism diagnosis, ADHD symptoms, or combined autism and ADHD symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Autism commonly co-occurs with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), but less is known regarding how ADHD symptoms impact the early presentation of autism. This study examined early behavioral characteristics of a community sample of toddlers later identified with autism diagnosis, ADHD symptoms, combined autism and ADHD symptoms, or neither condition. METHODS: Participants were 506 toddlers who were part of a longitudinal study of children's behavioral development. Parents completed questionnaires about their children's behavior at two time points. Four groups were ide

Which perseverative behaviors are symptoms of spatial neglect?

Spatial neglect is a characterized by a failure to attend or make movements towards left-sided stimuli. Common paper-and-pencil tasks to diagnose spatial neglect are sensitive to perseverative errors, including additional marks over already cancelled targets and "scribbling" out a target. Here, we examine whether functionally distinct perseverative behaviors are related to spatial neglect. Line cancellation tasks of 45 healthy controls and 220 right-hemisphere stroke survivors were examined for recurrent marks (RM) and continuous marks (CM) perseverations. We found that RM perseveration correl

Psychotic symptoms and suicidal behavior in hospitalized children.

Association of psychotic symptoms with suicidal behavior was studied in 90 hospitalized prepubertal children. Children with psychotic symptoms were more likely to have threatened or attempted suicide. The association of visual hallucinations with suicidal behavior was stronger than that of auditory hallucinations or psychotic ideation. The authors speculate that psychosis in general and visual hallucinations especially may be indicators of suicide risk among children.

Behavioral Complexity in Alzheimer's Disease: A Diversity-Based Analysis of Neuropsychiatric Symptoms.

Background and Objectives: To quantify behavioral complexity in probable Alzheimer's disease (AD), compare complexity phenotypes, and determine whether behavioral complexity provides clinically meaningful information beyond total neuropsychiatric burden. We also explored whether global amyloid extent and lobar amyloid topography added explanatory value. Methods: In this cross-sectional retrospective study, we analyzed 245 psychotropic drug-naïve patients with probable AD, positive 18F-FC119S amyloid positron emission tomography (PET), and complete neuropsychiatric, cognitive, functional, and r

Neuropsychiatric symptoms cluster and fluctuate over time in behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia.

AIM: Cognitive and behavioral phenomena define behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD), but neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) outside the core criteria are common throughout the illness. Identifying how NPS cluster in bvFTD may guide development of future therapies. METHODS: Participants (n = 354) with sporadic and genetic bvFTD were enrolled in the ARTFL LEFFTDS Longitudinal Frontotemporal Lobar Degeneration Consortium. Dementia stage was defined as early (CDR® plus NACC FTLD ≤1) or advanced (CDR® plus NACC FTLD ≥1). Baseline and annual follow-up visit data were analyzed to compare
