Mechanical properties, microstructure, and strike biomechanics of tubular fangs in neotropical vipers.

Viper fangs represent one of the most mechanically sophisticated biological penetration devices found in nature. Despite extensive interest in their venom-delivery function, a comprehensive characterization of the structure, composition, and biomechanics of neotropical viper fangs remains lacking. This study presents the first integrated analysis of the tubular fangs of three Latin American viper species - Lachesis acrochorda, Crotalus durissus cumanensis, and Bothrops asper - combining optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution X-ray computed tomography, attenuated tota

Synchronization dynamics between rider and saddle motion across gaits revealed by IMU analysis.

BACKGROUND: Effective rider-horse coordination is essential for performance and welfare, yet objective, field-based quantification of rider-saddle synchronization across gaits remains limited. AIMS/OBJECTIVES: To quantify dynamic synchronization between rider motion and saddle motion (as a proxy for horse trunk oscillations) across walk, trot, and canter using a minimal inertial measurement unit (IMU) setup, and to determine whether synchronization differs between rider body segments. METHODS: Two experienced riders (8-20 years riding experience) rode their own or familiar warmblood horses (

Katydids Shift to Higher-Stability Gaits when Climbing Inclined Substrates.

When terrestrial organisms locomote in natural settings, they must navigate complex surfaces that vary in incline angles and substrate roughness. Variable surface structures are common in arboreal environments and can be challenging to traverse. This study examines the walking gait of katydids (Tettigoniidae) as they traverse a custom-built platform with varying incline angles ($30^\circ$, $45^\circ$, $60^\circ$, $75^\circ$, $90^\circ$) and substrate roughness (40, 120, and 320 grit sandpaper). Our results show that katydids walk more slowly as the incline angle increases and as katydid mass i

Factors influencing stifle stability in canine limb press models: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Limb press models have been widely used to explore aspects of canine stifle stability and to inform surgical practice. This systematic review aimed to synthesize test conditions, periarticular forces, and stability measures in canine limb press models for comparison with in vivo measurements. Six databases (EMBASE, Ovid MEDLINE, CAB abstracts, Agricola, Scopus, and Web of Science) were searched from inception to 17.03.2025. Peer-reviewed experimental studies using static, axially loaded, whole-limb constructs and reporting cranial tibial translation, rotation, and/or periarticular forces were

Platform Design for Optical Screening and Conditioning for Injury Resilience.

INTRODUCTION: Musculoskeletal injuries (MSKIs) among active duty soldiers result in more than 10 million limited duty days each year and account for more than 70% of the medically nondeployable population. Overuse injuries in lower limbs from running, foot marching long distances with heavy loads, and lifting heavy objects are the most common types of injuries in the military. Physical training and rehabilitation exercises for greater resiliency through aerobic, muscle strength, endurance, and agility conditioning programs can prevent or reduce the effects of MSKIs if Soldiers adhere to proper

Optimal configurations for stiffness and compliance in human & robot arms.

Research in neurophysiology has shown that humans are able to adapt the mechanical stiffness at the hand in order to resist disturbances. This has served as inspiration for optimising stiffness in robot arms during manipulation tasks. Endpoint stiffness is modelled in Cartesian space, as though the hand were in independent rigid body. But an arm is a series of rigid bodies connected by articulated joints. The contribution of the joints and arm configuration to the endpoint stiffness has not yet been quantified. In this paper we use mathematical optimisation to find conditions for maximum stiff

Abnormal Gait Recognition Using 3D Joint information of Multiple Kinects System and RNN-LSTM.

Gait is an important indicator for specific diseases. Abnormal gait patterns are caused by various factors such as physical, neurological, and sensory problems. If it is possible to recognize abnormal gait patterns in the early stage of the related disease, patients can receive proper treatment early and prevent secondary accidents such as falls caused by unbalanced gait. In this paper, we propose a gait recognition system that can recognize 5 abnormal gait patterns. Our system using 3D joint information obtained by using multiple Kinect v2 sensors and RNN-LSTM. In particular, abnormal gaits c

Jet-paddling jellies: swimming performance in the Rhizostomeae jellyfish Catostylus mosaicus.

Jellyfish are a successful and diverse class of animals that swim via jet propulsion, with swimming performance and propulsive efficiency being related to the animal's feeding ecology and body morphology. The Rhizostomeae jellyfish lack tentacles but possess four oral lobes and eight trailing arms at the centre of their bell, giving them a body morphology quite unlike that of other free-swimming medusae. The implications of this body morphology on the mechanisms by which thrust is produced are unknown. Here, we determined the wake structure and propulsive efficiency in the blue-blubber jellyfi

Spinal neoplastic instability: biomechanics and current management options.

BACKGROUND: Often the spine is afflicted from primary or metastatic neoplastic disease, which can lead to instability. Instability can cause deformity, pain, and spinal cord compression and is an indication for surgery. Although overt instability is uniformly agreed upon, it is sometimes difficult for specialists to agree on subtle degrees of instability due to lack of objective criteria. METHODS: In this article, treatment options and the spine instability neoplastic system are discussed and the neoplastic instability literature is reviewed. RESULTS: The Spinal Instability Neoplastic Score

Numerical simulation of the mechanics of a yeast cell under high hydrostatic pressure.

The mechanical effects of the compression of a yeast cell (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) under high hydrostatic pressure used for the processing of food and food ingredients are modelled and simulated with the finite-element method. The cell model consists of a cell wall, cytoplasm a lipid filled vacuole and the nucleus. Material parameters have been taken from literature or have been derived from thermodynamic relationships of water and lipids under high hydrostatic pressure. The model has been validated for a pressure load up to 250 MPa. Comparison of the volume reduction to in situ experimental

Biomechanics and Mechanobiology of Saphenous Vein Grafts.

Within several weeks of use as coronary artery bypass grafts (CABG), saphenous veins (SV) exhibit significant intimal hyperplasia (IH). IH predisposes vessels to thrombosis and atherosclerosis, the two major modes of vein graft failure. The fact that SV do not develop significant IH in their native venous environment coupled with the rapidity with which they develop IH following grafting into the arterial circulation suggests that factors associated with the isolation and preparation of SV and/or differences between the venous and arterial environments contribute to disease progression. There

Impact response of the intervertebral disc in a finite-element model.

STUDY DESIGN: A three-dimensional nonlinear poroelastic finite-element model of a vertebra disc was used to analyze the biomechanical effects of impact loading on the spinal segment. OBJECTIVES: To predict changes in biomechanical parameters such as intradiscal pressure, dynamic stiffness, stresses in the endplate region, and the shock-absorbing mechanism of the spine under different impact duration/loading rates, and to investigate the relation between the rate of loading and the fracture potential of the vertebral body. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: It is not practical to discern the role of

Stepwise Stiffening/Softening of and Cell Recovery from Reversibly Formulated Hydrogel Interpenetrating Networks.

Biomechanical contributions of the extracellular matrix underpin cell growth and proliferation, differentiation, signal transduction, and other fate decisions. As such, biomaterials whose mechanics can be spatiotemporally altered- particularly in a reversible manner- are extremely valuable for studying these mechanobiological phenomena. Herein, a poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-based hydrogel model consisting of two interpenetrating step-growth networks is introduced that are independently formed via largely orthogonal bioorthogonal chemistries and sequentially degraded with distinct recombinant s

Oblique Vertical Component and Dual Anteroposterior Fixation in Sagittal "L"-Shaped High Tibial Osteotomy: Technical Considerations and Biomechanical Reasoning.

AIM: To describe an oblique vertical modification of the sagittal "L"-shaped high tibial osteotomy combined with dual anteroposterior fixation and to present the biomechanical reasoning supporting its potential application. METHODS: A technical note was developed based on the previously described sagittal "L"-shaped high tibial osteotomy (HTO). The proposed modification consists of introducing a slight obliquity (10°-20°) in the vertical osteotomy component posterior to the tibial tubercle while maintaining supplementary parallel anteroposterior fixation. The surgical technique, preoperative

Muscle coactivation-inspired stiffness-driven control strategy for antagonistic soft robots.

Soft robots excel at safe and adaptive interaction but are often constrained by limited load capacity and manipulation precision. Antagonistic soft actuators offer a promising route to address these challenges by coupling actuation with variable stiffness, inspired by biological systems such as elephant trunks and octopus tentacles. However, existing control strategies largely treat stiffness as a passive mechanical property, whereas those that incorporate stiffness regulation typically rely on analytical models, limiting their deployment in soft robots with difficult-to-model dynamics. Here,

How geographical origin and dietary habits interact with the shape of cortical mandibular sections? A geometric morphometrics study in an archaeological context.

OBJECTIVE: Mandibular shape is strongly influenced by biomechanics, particularly during dietary shifts that often occurred in past populations. The relationship is considered extremely complex as development of the mandible is a multifactorial process. Since cortical bone distribution is purportedly more biomechanically sensitive than external shape, comparison of its distribution in past populations can provide new input to understand this complex relationship. The present study examined the effects of geographical origin and dietary habits on the internal anatomy of the mandibular corpus and
