The birth-weight ratio, a convenient measure of fetal growth, has been used to assess the importance of antecedent and perinatal factors in a retrospective analysis of 605 cases of congenital cerebral palsy. All had been seen by the author at a special clinic over a period of three decades. The ratio (normally 1) is high in the very premature, falls in the middle of the third trimester, then begins to rise again at term. Abnormalities of pregnancy, or a history of maternal pregnancy-losses, depress the ratio perceptibly. In both singletons and twins, there is no significant relationship betwee

A group of patients suffering from severe hyperemesis gravidarum is defined. In contrast to what is reported in the literature, these women gave birth to babies with lower birth weight when compared to the hospital population and also to women who had a milder degree of hyperemesis gravidarum. This indicates that the metabolic disturbance created by hyperemesis may have an adverse effect on the growth potential of the fetus.

The reproductive performance of sisters and sisters-in-law of 185 women who had delivered "light-for-dates" and "premature expulsion" low birth weight infants was studied. Percentile birth weights were compared taking into account length of gestation, fetal sex, and the height, weight, parity, and smoking habits of the mother. Sisters of women who had delivered light-for-dates babies had lighter babies than the general population, their sisters-in-law, or the sisters of women in the premature expulsion group. These other groups, however, had the expected distribution of percentile birth weight…

BACKGROUND: Low birth weight and preterm or early-term babies may have a higher risk of poor health. One of the main factors is the weight gain of a pregnant woman during gestational weeks in the second and third trimesters. Changes in weight over a month in a pregnant woman might also have an impact on infant outcomes. This study aimed to investigate the association between maternal weight at different time points and low birth weight and preterm or early-term babies (premature babies).
METHODS: A total of 156 pregnant women were recruited. Maternal weight was collected at different gestatio…

Background: Fat distribution is associated with chronic diseases and birth weight may influence fat distribution throughout life. Our aim was to compare fat distribution in children born extremely low birth weight (ELBW) and very low birth weight (VLBW). Methods: This retrospective cohort study evaluated children born ELBW and VLBW around the 7th year of life. Fat distribution was assessed by ultrasonography measurements of abdominal subcutaneous and visceral fat thickness. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed. Results: We studied 63 children. Visceral fat thickness but not subcut…

BACKGROUND: The incidence of congenital heart defects, reported to be 5-8/1000 in term infants, is not well established in very low birth weight infants.
OBJECTIVES: To establish the incidence of congenital heart defects in VLBW infants in the neonatal intensive care unit of our institution.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of the population in the NICU at our institution was performed. VLBW (BW < or = 1500 g) infants born between 2001 and 2006 who survived more than 48 hours were included in the study. Infants with clinical signs of heart disease underwent echocardiography.
RESULTS: Durin…

OBJECTIVE: To explore the relationship between gestational weight gain (GWG) and birth weight outcomes and establish suggested GWG patterns in early pregnancy weight loss women.
METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted based on the Beijing Birth Cohort Study from 2014 to 2021 and included 20 688 women. Weight change in early pregnancy was calculated using weight measurements within 16 weeks of gestation. Multivariable logistic regression was used to analyze the relationships of different GWG categories, based on the Chinese standard, and birth weight outcomes. The statistical-based app…

This study aimed to evaluate the association between parental and infant birth weights in Japan. In total, 37,504 pregnant Japanese women and their partners were included in this birth cohort study. A multinomial logistic regression model was used to evaluate the associations of parental birth weights with small-for-gestational-age (SGA) or large-for-gestational-age (LGA) infants. Associations between parental birth weight and low birth weight (LBW) infants or macrosomia were also examined, and linear associations between parental birth weight and SGA or LGA were found. The adjusted odds ratio…

OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to evaluate the association between maternal weight gain and twin birth weight.
STUDY DESIGN: This historic cohort study was based on 646 live-born twin births of > or = 28 weeks from Baltimore, Maryland, Miami, Florida, and Ann Arbor, Michigan. The sum of twin-pair birth weight was modeled as a function of either net maternal weight at delivery or rates of maternal weight gain with use of multiple regression.
RESULTS: Birth weight was significantly associated with weight gain before 20 weeks in underweight women, before 20 weeks and after 28 weeks in overweight wo…

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of birth weight and early weight gain on the timing of various measures of puberty in both girls and boys.
METHODS: A total of 856 newborns enrolled in the North Carolina Infant Feeding Study were followed to age 5 years, with 600 children followed up at adolescence. Birth weight was obtained from medical records and children were weighed at study visits until age 5 years; gains in standardized weights were calculated over four early age intervals: 0-6 months, 6-12 months, 1-2 years and 2-5 years. Age at menarche in girls and age at advanced Tanner stages …

I developed a single equation that simulated previously published growth charts for very low-birth-weight infants, using birth weight as the only variable. The intent of this study was to validate the equation using infants admitted to our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and to determine if this equation could be used as a research tool to compare weight gain among populations. All 171 surviving infants with birth weight < or = 1500 g who received care in our NICU were studied retrospectively. The individual daily weights were compared with the predicted daily weights for each infant using…

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between maternal weight gain patterns, based on pregravid body mass index (BMI) and birth weight outcome in twins, and to make specific recommendations for maternal weight gain during twin gestation.
METHODS: One hundred eighty-nine twin pregnancies were reviewed retrospectively. Weekly rates of maternal weight gain before 20 weeks, from 20 weeks to delivery, and for total gestation were calculated. Thresholds of weekly maternal weight gain were determined for underweight and normal-weight women.
RESULTS: In underweight women, a higher weekly rate of ga…

Maternal weight gain is one of the most important independent predictors of infant birth weight and interacts with other maternal characteristics, including age, so that infant birth weight reaches a plateau at a higher level of maternal weight gain for young adolescents than for adults. It has been suggested that encouraging young adolescents to gain larger amounts of weight during pregnancy may be one way to decrease their risk of low-birth-weight deliveries. This recommendation may be premature because the mechanisms underlying the interaction between maternal age and weight gain are incomp…

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this paper is to analyze the impact of low birth weight (LBW) and very low birth weight (VLBW) on health care utilization in childhood and early adolescence.
DATA/METHODS: Using Austrian health insurance administrative panel data linked to the Austrian birth register, we estimate the effects of LBW and VLBW in comparison to normal birth weight (NBW) on the number of days spent in the hospital and on expenditures for medical assistance and medical drugs among children and young adults between birth and 21 years of age. To account for the time-invariant heterogeneity of m…
