Coordinated mosquito biting dynamics at the human skin interface.

The bite of a female mosquito is the critical point of pathogen transmission, yet the fine-scale biting dynamics on human skin remain unknown. Here, we combine high-speed videography, deep-learning-based tracking, and electrophysiology to analyze biting dynamics of the malaria vector Anopheles coluzzii in real time at the human skin interface. We uncover a previously uncharacterized synchronization of mouthpart and leg movements during probing and identify five distinct below skin sub-behaviors: piercing, vessel searching, blood ingestion, retraction, and withdrawal. We show that disruption of

Identification and Distribution of Human-Biting Ticks in Northwestern Spain.

Ticks transmit a wide diversity of pathogens to a great variety of hosts, including humans. We conducted a tick surveillance study in northwestern Spain between 2014 and 2019. Ticks were removed from people and identified. Tick numbers, species, development stages, the timeline, seasonal and geographical distribution and epidemiological characteristics of people bitten by ticks were studied. We collected ticks from 8143 people. Nymphs of I. ricinus were the most frequently collected. Rhipicephalus bursa, R. sanguineus s.l., Hy. marginatum, Hy. lusitanicum, D. marginatus, D. reticulatus and H.

Fournier's Gangrene of the Penis following a Human Bite Wound.

Fournier's gangrene isolated to the penis is exceedingly rare. It is an urologic emergency that requires emergent parenteral antibiotics as well as aggressive irrigation and debridement. While human bite wounds can be overlooked as a serious cause of injury and infection, they can result in highly dangerous, polymicrobial infections in affected patients. Here, we report a case of penile Fournier's gangrene caused by a human bite wound managed with broad spectrum antibiotics, irrigation and debridement, penile reconstruction, and skin grafting with successful preservation of a normal penile str

Human Bite-induced Cellulitis Due to Streptococcus pyogenes.

The rate of infection after a human bite is 10%-30%. Streptococcus spp. are the most common pathogens that may cause serious infections, such as necrotizing fasciitis. The authors describe a 5-year-old girl admitted to the emergency room with cellulitis due to S. pyogenes after human bites. She presented with fever and pain in her left arm, and her medical history revealed a human bite by her cousin on the arm 3 days prior. The wound culture yielded S. pyogenes. She was successfully treated with intravenous ampicillin-sulbactam regimen. S. pyogenes may cause serious wound infections following

Human bite wounds: a swiss emergency department experience.

UNLABELLED: Human bites (HB) are the third most common bite wound diagnosed in emergency departments, after dog and cat bites. Management of HB can be challenging, given the high risk of infection associated with multiorganism-rich oral flora. Recognition and early aggressive treatment are essential steps in preventing infections and other associated complications. METHODS: A retrospective, 10-year electronic chart review was performed, which identified 104 HB. Diagnosis, treatment, and outcome were noted for each case. RESULTS: Most of the patients were male, with a male:female ratio

Forensic odontology, part 4. Human bite marks.

The aim of this paper is to give a brief overview of bite mark analysis: its usefulness and limitations. The study and analysis of such injuries is challenging and complex. The correct protocols for collection, management, preservation, analysis and interpretation of this evidence should be employed if useful information is to be obtained for the courts. It is now possible, with advances in digital technology, to produce more accurate and reproducible comparison techniques which go some way to preventing and reducing problems such as photographic distortions. Research needs to be continued to

Primary repair of a flexor tendon after a human bite.

Successful uncomplicated primary closure of a human bite injury of the hand with simultaneous zone II flexor tendon injury has not been previously reported to our knowledge. We report the case of a man who was bitten on his left ring and right middle and index fingers. He was treated with antiseptic lavage, intravenous antibiotics, and operation. He had complete transsection of the flexor digitorum profundus at the middle phalanx. This was repaired primarily and he made a good recovery.

Bacteriology of a bear bite wound to a human: case report.

Human contact with bears has become more frequent, as has the resultant bear maulings and bite injuries. We report the bacteriology of a patient bitten by a grizzly bear (Ursus arctos) from the Rocky Mountains foothills area east of Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada. The patient received field care, including metronidazole and cefazolin. Subsequent deep-wound cultures grew Serratia fonticola, Serratia marcescens, Aeromonas hydrophila, Bacillus cereus, and Enterococcus durans but no anaerobes.

[Borrelia in ticks biting humans and prevention of Lyme borreliosis].

We examined by dark field microscopy 195 of 209 Ixodes ricinus ticks that were removed from humans in the Czech Republic (mainly in southern Moravia) during 1997-2001. The majority of the ticks were nymphs (62%), 31% were females and 7% larvae; 10.7% of the nymphs, 20.3% of the females but no larvae were found to be infected with B. burgdorferi s.l., the agent of Lyme borreliosis (LB). This observation supports for Central Europe the conclusions drawn from North America about nymphal ixodid ticks as the most important vector stage in transmission of LB. In the course of the year, we found the

Microbiology and management of human and animal bite wound infections.

This article describes the microbiology, diagnosis, and management of human and animal bite wound infections. Various organisms can be recovered from bite wounds that generally result from aerobic and anaerobic microbial flora of the oral cavity of the biting animal, rather than the victim's own skin flora. The role of anaerobes in bite wound infections has been increasingly appreciated. Anaerobes were isolated from more than two thirds of human and animal bite wound infections, especially those associated with abscess formation. This article describes several of the organisms found in the bit

Toxic shock syndrome due to an infected human bite.

We report a case of nonmenstrual toxic shock syndrome. A 21-year-old man presented with severe pain in the right hand after an altercation in which he sustained a bite from a person. Physical examination revealed a small abscess on the right proximal interphalangeal joint with edema in the fourth and fifth digits and tenderness of the flexor sheath. The patient was hypotensive with diffuse macular erythematous skin. He responded to surgical drainage and antibiotics.

Protocols for Diagnosis and Management of Arthropod Bite Allergies in Humans.

Allergic diseases have increased significantly in recent decades, with a higher incidence of severe manifestations such as anaphylaxis. This increase is attributed mainly to environmental factors associated with the Western lifestyle that alter the epithelial barrier, promoting sensitization to allergens, such as those from arthropods. Hymenoptera (bees and wasps) are the most implicated arthropods. The sting introduces a venom composed of highly sensitizing proteins that are capable of triggering reactions ranging from local and mild to potentially fatal systemic reactions. The incidence is h

[Trauma surgical relevance of bite injuries by animals and humans].

Bite injuries require differentiated treatment due to the deeply inoculated polymicrobial pathogen spectrum, possible concomitant injuries and pronounced soft tissue damage. Dog bites are the most common bite injuries but are less complicated to heal than human and cat bites. The location of the bite greatly depends on the age and the size of the bite victim as well as the type of bite perpetrator. In every case detection of the pathogen should be carried out to provide the best possible adapted treatment in the event of an exacerbation. The primary antibiotic treatment should be empirical wit
