From April 3, 1976, to Dec 31, 1979, one hundred thirteen fatalities were reported to the Food and Drug Administration as a sequela of the transfusion of blood or blood products. Thirty-three fatalities were due to posttransfusion hepatitis, and three involved plasmapheresis or leukopheresis donors. OBJECTIVE: To investigate application effects of autologous blood transfusion and allogeneic blood transfusion in surgically treated patients receiving spine surgery, abdomen surgery and ectopic pregnancy surgery.

Blood transfusion therapy carries a small risk of complications-usually minor-which include allergic reactions, hemolysis, and the transmission of infections. Fatal hemolytic transfusion reactions are rare and are usually due to human error resulting in administration of ABO incompatible blood. Viral hepatitis (usually non-A, non-B) remains the major infectious complication, with a risk of two to five percent. Blood transfusions can affect the immune response in two opposite ways. They may either lead to immunization or to tolerance induction. Immunization is reflected by the induction of HLA alloantibodies and T cell activation while the induction of tolerance is suggested by the enhanced graft survival in transfused versus non-transfused recipients. The immunological mechanism leading to downregulation of the alloimmune response is not clear.
