Food intake and body weight changes in mice infected with metacestodes of Taenia crassiceps.

General nutritional effects on female CFLP mice harbouring larval Taenia crassiceps were investigated using groups of mice fed ad libitum on purified diets containing 2%, 4%, 8% and 16% (w/w) protein respectively. When uninfected and infected mice were compared over an experimental period of 20 weeks, it was established that a significantly higher proportion of uninfected mice survived the course of the experiment than infected mice. There was no evidence of the presence of the parasites having any effect on the overall food intake of the mice. Infected mice, however, were found to be signific

Changes in Body Weight and Concurrent Changes in Cardiovascular Risk Profiles in Community Residents in Japan: the Hisayama Study.

AIM: We investigated the influence of weight change on concurrent changes in predicted cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk and individual CVD risk factors over time. METHODS: A total of 2,140 community-dwellers aged 40-74 years participated in both 2002 and 2007 health examinations. Obesity was defined as body mass index ≥ 25 kg/m2. Weight trajectories were classified as: "stable obese" (obese at both examinations), "obese to nonobese" (obese in 2002 but nonobese in 2007), "nonobese to obese" (nonobese in 2002 but obese in 2007), or "stable nonobese" (nonobese at both examinations). We compared

Body weight changes and corresponding changes in pain and function in persons with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis: a cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if a dose-response relationship exists between percentage changes in body weight in persons with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis (OA) and self-reported pain and function. METHODS: Data from persons in the Osteoarthritis Initiative (OAI) and the Multicenter Osteoarthritis (MOST) study data sets (n = 1,410) with symptomatic function-limiting knee OA were studied. For the OAI, we used baseline and 3-year followup data, while for the MOST study, baseline and 30-month data were used. Key outcome variables were Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (

Predictors of Changes in Weight and Body Composition in Undernourished Children in Mozambique: A Longitudinal Study.

Undernutrition is a major public health challenge in Mozambique, requiring a better understanding of changes in weight and body composition. In the present study, changes in weight and body composition were analyzed in undernourished children, and predictors of these changes were identified during and after hospitalization. A longitudinal cohort study was conducted in Maputo, Mozambique (2018-2020), in children aged 6 to 58 months hospitalized for malnutrition. On hospital admission, clinical data, including anemia, edema, and HIV infection status, were collected. Anthropometric measurements,

Effect of Bifidobacterium on olanzapine-induced body weight and appetite changes in patients with psychosis.

RATIONALE: Gut microbiota plays an important role in host metabolism. Antipsychotic drugs can result in metabolic abnormalities. Probiotics may ameliorate the antipsychotic drug-induced metabolic abnormalities by regulating gut microbiota. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether Bifidobacterium intervention can ameliorate olanzapine-induced weight increase. METHODS: Enrolled patients were assigned to either the olanzapine or olanzapine plus Bifidobacterium group. The following were assessed: body weight, body mass index (BMI), appetite, latency to increased appetite, and baseline weight increase of

Relation between change in treatment for central diabetes insipidus and body weight loss.

BACKGROUND: Patients with central diabetes insipidus (CDI) are known to lose weight because their polydipsia interferes with their nutritional intake. We retrospectively examined weight changes in CDI patients when they switched from nasal to oral desmopressin. METHODS: Twenty-three patients with CDI were included. Weight change was defined as an increase or decrease of more than 3 kg or 3% body weight. As factors contributing to the weight change, we studied the patients' clinical characteristics and quality of life (QOL) scores as determined by our original questionnaire. RESULTS: Five pat

Influence of body mass index on the association of weight changes with mortality in hemodialysis patients.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: A high body mass index (BMI) is associated with lower mortality in patients undergoing hemodialysis. Short-term weight gains and losses are also related to lower and higher mortality risk, respectively. The implications of weight gain or loss may, however, differ between obese individuals and their nonobese counterparts. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS, & MEASUREMENTS: The Current Management of Secondary Hyperparathyroidism: A Multicenter Observational Study (COSMOS) is an observational study including 6797 European hemodialysis patients recruited between February 200

Progressive muscle pain, weight gain, fatique and unusual body shape change.

Multiple symmetrical lipomatosis (MSL) is a rare syndrome characterized by symmetric unencapsulated lipomas around the axial region and frequently associated with neurological involvement, particularly myopathy and neuropathy (Klopstock et al., 1994). Here we present a typical image of a patient with MSL, explaining this disease for neurologists who might care for these patients in an average day at the neuromuscular consultation unit.

Weight change in depression: influence of "disinhibition" is mediated by body mass and other variables.

The direction of weight change (gain or loss) in depression has recently been found to be a stable characteristic of patients across depressive episodes. A search for determinants of the direction of weight change revealed two candidates: the body mass index (BMI) (weight in kilograms/height in meters squared) and a psychological variable, "disinhibition" of dietary restraint. The present study, of 68 patients with a history of recurrent depression, found a significant correlation between BMI and weight change; in other words, heavier persons were more likely to gain weight if depressed. There

Associations of weight, weight change, and body mass with breast cancer risk in Hispanic and non-Hispanic white women.

PURPOSE: A wealth of studies have examined the effects of weight, weight gain, and obesity on breast cancer risk; however, few have examined this relationship in Hispanic white women, a population with the highest rate of obesity in the U.S. METHODS: A population-based case-control study was conducted in New Mexico of Hispanic (n = 694) and non-Hispanic (n = 813) white women with incident breast cancer during the period of January 1, 1992 through December 31, 1994. Conditional logistic regression models were fitted to estimate the relative risk of breast cancer for levels of weight, weight ch

Effect of acupuncture on asthma control and body weight changes in obese patients with asthma.

BACKGROUND: Chronic persistent asthma is difficult to control and is often comorbid with obesity. Acupuncture has been shown to reduce airway inflammation and improve lung function, and it may also help regulate body weight to some extent. Currently, obesity combined with chronic persistent asthma is a research hotspot, but interventional studies involving acupuncture remain relatively limited. This study aims to fill this gap. METHODS: Patients were divided into a control group (conventional western medical treatment) and a treatment group (conventional western medical treatment plus acupunc

Evaluating the effect of targeting body shape concerns on long-term weight change.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this follow-up to a randomized proof-of-concept study was to determine if targeting body shape concern (BSC) has a clinically significant impact on long-term weight change among adult women of higher body weight with BSC. A secondary aim was to observe the maintenance of body image improvements during follow-up. METHOD: In the original 4-week trial, women were randomized to behavioral weight loss recommendations alone (control; n = 15) or combined with the evidence-based body project intervention (n = 17). All participants were directed to continue monitoring diet and e

Weight change, body image, and quality of life in HIV disease: a pilot study.

Fat distribution alterations and lipodystrophy occur as part of a broad spectrum of body alterations in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Recent advances in HIV therapies, including highly active antiretroviral therapy, contribute to these fat distribution alterations. The purpose of this pilot study was to investigate the relationships of weight change, body image, length of time with HIV/AIDS diagnosis, and quality of life in HIV disease. The sample consisted of 23 men with mean age of 42.2 years (SD = 8.2) and 17 women with mean age of 36.8 years

[Role of excessive body weight and hormonal changes in the development of the main types of hyperlipoproteinemia].

Hyperlipoproteinemia (HLP) was detected in 67.3% of 118 males without CHD (with the mean age of 44.7 years) engaged in intellectual occupations. The excessive body weight in this group was twice higher, and blood insulin 1.5 times higher, while the STH levels twice lower as compared to patients with normolipoproteinemia (NLP). The mean concentrations of ACTH, cortisol, T3, T4 in both groups were equal and did not exceed normal. In males with the II A type of HLP versus those with the II B and IV types, the excessive body weight and blood cortisol content were 1.5 times as low but testosterone

Body weight changes and associated predictors in a prospective cohort of young breast cancer survivors.

BACKGROUND: Weight gain after a breast cancer diagnosis is common and is associated with inferior outcomes. Young survivors may be especially susceptible to weight changes given the impact of treatment on menopausal status. METHODS: The authors identified women who were diagnosed with stage 0 to III breast cancer at age 40 years or younger between 2006 and 2016 from a multicenter prospective cohort. Self-reported weight was collected at diagnosis and at 1 year and 3 years postdiagnosis. Tumor and treatment data were obtained from medical records and patient surveys. Multinomial logistic regre
