Branchial cleft-like cysts in Hashimoto's thyroiditis: A case report and literature review.

We report an extremely rare case of branchial cleft-like cysts in Hashimoto's thyroiditis. The patient was a 77-year-old man with a growing mass in the anterior neck. Ultrasonography and computed tomography revealed a cystic lesion with septum in the left thyroid and multiple small cystic lesions in the right thyroid. Lymph node swelling of the cervical region, supraclavicular fossa and submandibular region was also observed. Left thyroidectomy and lymph node dissection were performed. Histologically, cysts were lined by stratified squamous epithelium and dense lymphoid tissue having conspicuo

Branchial cleft cyst with xanthogranulomatous inflammation.

Xanthogranulomatous inflammation (XGI) is a special type of inflammation presenting as mass lesions and mimicking malignant tumors. It is rarely described in the head and neck region, and to the best of our knowledge, there are no cases associated with branchial cleft cyst. A 39-year-old woman with an infiltrative cystic neck mass that radiologically mimicks a malignant tumor is herein presented. The histopathologic diagnosis was a branchial cleft cyst with XGI. XGI may be associated wih branchial cleft cysts. Patients may present with radiologic findings mimicking an invasive malignant tumor,

Pharyngeal Arches, Chapter 3: Craniofacial Syndromes.

Pharyngeal arch development is complex and can result in a wide range of unique head and neck anomalies. Understanding the developmental processes and the related pathoanatomy is essential for clinicians who manage affected patients. This manuscript is the third in a 4-part educational series for plastic surgeons focusing on normal and abnormal pharyngeal arch development. A summary of the etiology and clinical features of each syndrome covered in this manuscript is provided in the Supplemental Table, Supplemental Digital Content 1, http://links.lww.com/SCS/I489 for quick reference.

A revised terminology for the pharyngeal arches and the arch arteries.

The pharyngeal arches are a series of bulges found on the lateral surface of the head of vertebrate embryos. In humans, and other amniotes, there are five pharyngeal arches and traditionally these have been labelled from cranial to caudal-1, 2, 3, 4 and 6. This numbering is odd-there is no '5'. Two reasons have been given for this. One is that during development, a 'fifth' arch forms transiently but is not fully realised. The second is that this numbering fits with the evolutionary history of the pharyngeal arches. Recent studies, however, have shown that neither of these justifications have b

Case report: a branchial cleft anomaly presenting as an oropharyngeal mass.

Branchial anomalies are common cervical pathologic entities encountered in the field of otolaryngology and are typical in the pediatric and young adult populations. In most cases, these anomalies present as a cyst, sinus, or fistula in a rather stereotypical fashion. When a branchial anomaly deviates from the classic presentation, an improper diagnosis and inadequate management are more likely to occur, leading to an increased recurrence rate. We present a case of a 6-year-old girl with an incidental finding of a right posterior oropharyngeal wall mass, distinctly separate from the tonsillar f

Thymic cyst: a fourth branchial cleft anomaly.

We report a unique case of a fourth branchial cleft cyst found within the thymus of an adult patient. In the literature to date, there have been no reports of such a finding in the adult population. These anomalies can often cause recurrent acute suppurative thyroiditis or recurrent deep neck abscesses. Delay in recognizing the underlying etiology can lead to significant complications.

[Piriform sinus fistula, a new disease].

Pyriform sinus fistula has recently been described as a new, rare and little known pathology. The process develops as latero-cervical suppurative adenitis or acute suppurative thyroiditis, usually on the left side. Radical surgery is mandatory to avoid recurrence. This congenital malformation must be present in the differential diagnosis of recurrent infectious cervical processes, especially in acute thyroiditis. The only curative treatment is complete exeresis of the fistula after meticulous dissection of the fistulous tract. We present three cases of this pathology. The diagnostic approach a

Single arterial trunk arising from the aortic arch. Evidence that the fifth branchial arch can persist as the definitive aortic arch.

A seven month old female having a single arterial trunk arising from the aortic arch is presented. The baby also had severe coarctation of the aorta and a patent ductus arteriosus. This anomaly cannot be explained by Edwards' embryonic double aortic arch model. However, it can be explained by persistence of the fifth branchial arch as the definitive aortic arch.

The embryogenesis and anatomy of Waldeyer's ring.

The developmental history of the embryonic germ disk is briefly traced through the bilaminar, trilaminar, and bodyfold stages with emphasis on the pharyngeal arches, pouches, and clefts. This is followed by a discussion of the genesis and adult anatomy of the tonsillar tissues.
