Breast Pain Differential: Mondor's Disease of the Breast.

Breast pain is a common concern among women in primary care clinics. A rare cause of breast pain is Mondor's disease (MD), which can present as an acute, painful, erythematous, cord-like induration on the breast or anterior chest wall. The disorder is caused by sclerosing superficial thrombophlebitis of the anterolateral thoracoabdominal wall veins. There does not appear to be a racial or ethnic propensity for this condition; however, it is important to understand that it may be more difficult to see in darker skin types (Fitzpatrick skin types IV-VI) and requires close attention on physical e…

Screening for dense breasts: digital breast tomosynthesis.

OBJECTIVE. Digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) is a recent imaging technology that was developed to address the limitations of conventional 2D mammography. The limitations of standard mammography are well known and include reduced sensitivity in dense breasts. Clinical research studies of DBT and the implementation of DBT have revealed that DBT has potential benefits for evaluating patients with dense breasts. This article will discuss the benefits and limitations of DBT as a screening alternative for women with dense breasts. CONCLUSION. Studies to date have revealed that the use of DBT reduce…

[Complications of breast reduction about 715 breasts].

BACKGROUND: Breast reduction is one of the most frequent operations in elective plastic surgery. The main objective of this study was to describe complications due to breast reduction, and to determine the risk factors. METHODS: Our comparative retrospective study reviewed the medical files of 715 operated breasts between 2004 and 2009. Statistical analyses were performed with bivariate analyses and multivariable analysis. RESULTS: Smoking, resected mammary gland mass and stretch marks were the three risk factors associated with complications after breast reduction. Smoking was also associat…

A malignant mass in the breast is not always breast cancer.

A 37-year-old woman presented to the Internal Medicine Clinic with complaints of abdominal pain and constipation which had begun 3 months ea … ot fixed to the skin, measuring 1 cm in diameter, was found in the lower outer quadrant of the left breast. A core biopsy of the mass was performed, and a histopathological report confirmed metastasis to the breast from mucinous adenocarcinoma of an intestinal primary.

Primary Actinomycosis of the Breast Presenting as a Breast Mass.

BACKGROUND: Primary actinomycosis of the breast is a rare disease which may present as sinus tract or with mass-like features mimicking malignancy. Clinical presentation makes it difficult to distinguish primary actinomycosis from mastitis and inflammatory carcinoma. CASE REPORT: A 48-year-old woman presented with a mass in the left breast of 2 months duration. Physical examination was significant for a non-tender mass in the left breast. Histopathologic examination of the excisional biopsy of the mass showed granulomatous inflammation with grains of Actinomyces israelii. CONCLUSIONS: Actinomy…

Benign breast disease and the risk of breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Benign breast disease is an important risk factor for breast cancer. We studied a large group of women with benign breast disease to obtain reliable estimates of this risk. METHODS: We identified all women who received a diagnosis of benign breast disease at the Mayo Clinic between 1967 and 1991. Breast-cancer events were obtained from medical records and questionnaires. To estimate relative risks, we compared the number of observed breast cancers with the number expected on the basis of the rates of breast cancer in the Iowa Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results registry. …

Extramedullary plasmacytoma of the breast simulating breast cancer.

A patient with a palpable mass in the breast suggestive of carcinoma underwent radical modified mastectomy. Surprisingly, histology of the tumor revealed an extramedullary plasmacytoma. Further diagnostic work up showed no evidence of underlying multiple myeloma. Among neoplastic lesions of the breast, although rare, malignancy of mesenchymal or lymphoproliferative origin should always be considered.

Breast size and prognosis in early breast cancer.

The influence of breast size on the prognosis of 196 patients with early breast cancer diagnosed in the period 1984-1985 was studied. Breast size was based on the volume from mammography. This method was validated against the volume of the mastectomy specimen determined by water displacement in 18 patients and found to be accurate (r = 0.93, P < 0.01). The median breast volume was 833.5 cm3 (interquartile range 522.8-1153.3 cm3). Breast size was significantly associated independently with age (Spearman's rank r = 0.24. P = 0.001), menstrual status (z = -4.81, P < 0.001), body weight (Spearman'…

Recurrent breast carcinoma at the time of breast reconstruction.

Detection of recurrent breast carcinoma following reconstruction of mastectomy defects is of concern to plastic surgeons and oncologists. During the past four years we have found recurrent, previously undetected breast cancer in 4 patients at the time of reconstruction. The recurrent disease presented differently in each patient: as fascial thickening, as a small node hidden under a pectoralis muscle stump, as a microscopical tumor contained within the mastectomy scar, and as a small mass which developed during the interim between the last office visit and the scheduled surgery. All of the pat…

Aqua Breast Augmentation (ABA): Hydrodissection Breast Augmentation Technique.

INTRODUCTION: Breast augmentation is a prevalent procedure in plastic surgery. In this article we present the Aqua Breast Technique (ABA), an approach aimed at enhancing patient satisfaction and reducing downtime. This technique leverages tumescent anesthesia and a small incision in the inframammary fold, avoiding electrocautery and surgical drains, to fulfill the growing demand for painless procedures with minimal recovery periods. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study retrospectively analyzed 238 patients who underwent breast augmentation using the ABA technique at Instituto Rubi between 2021 an…

Breast milk beta-glucuronidase in breast milk jaundice.

Breast milk jaundice (BMJ) is the most common etiology of prolonged unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia in a newborn infant. The pathogenesis of BMJ has been studied by many investigators, yet the etiology still remains uncertain. A prospective study was done to examine the role of breast milk beta-glucuronidase in BMJ in healthy full-term Chinese newborns. There were 71 infants in the formula-fed group (FF group), 28 in the breast-fed group (BF group) and 27 in the mixed feeding group (MF group). Study infants were followed at the well-baby clinic for at least two months. Enzyme activity in mater…

Breast self-examination practices and breast cancer survival.

To determine the relation between breast self-examination and survival of breast cancer patients, the authors studied 1004 newly diagnosed invasive breast cancer patients in Vermont general hospitals from 1 July 1975 to 31 December 1982. More frequent breast self-examination was associated with a greater likelihood of the patient's detecting her own cancer, less delay from first symptom to histologic diagnosis, earlier clinical stage, smaller pathologic tumor size, and fewer axillary node metastases. At a median follow-up time of 52 months (maximum follow-up, 92 months), 14% of the breast self…

Partial Breast Reirradiation for Breast Cancer Recurrences After Repeat Breast-Conserving Surgery with Proton Beam Therapy: The Prospective BREAST Trial (NCT06954623).

(1) Background: The management of ipsilateral breast cancer recurrence depends on the extent of the tumor, and staging results, and mastectomy is currently the standard of care for previously irradiated patients. Studies are increasingly investigating suitable candidates for the repeated use of breast-conserving approaches as an alternative to mastectomy. But this includes the crucial necessity for curative reirradiation (Re-RT). The therapeutic challenge in reirradiation involves finding a balance between tumor control and the risk of severe toxicity from cumulative radiation doses in previou…

Comparison of Abbreviated Breast MRI vs Digital Breast Tomosynthesis for Breast Cancer Detection among Women with a History of Breast Cancer.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: To compare the diagnostic performance of abbreviated breast MRI (AB-MRI) and digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) in women with a personal history (PH) of breast cancer as a postoperative screening tool. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 471 patients who completed both DBT and AB-MRI examinations were included in this study (median age, 54.5 years). The detected cancer characteristics were analyzed. The cancer detection rate (CDR), sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), accuracy, and area under the curve (AUC) were c…

Edinburgh breast education campaign on breast cancer and breast self-examination: was it worth while?

A health education campaign was carried out at the start of a large trial of screening for breast cancer in Edinburgh. After preliminary studies the campaign concentrated on talks to small groups of women by specially trained health visitors. Over a year, 12,000 women attended. Systematic evaluation after 12 months showed that selected women who heard the talks were more knowledgeable about breast cancer, and a random sample of women in Edinburgh had a small but significant improvement in knowledge compared with women in Aberdeen. However, the random sample did not report an increase in the pr…

Breast Conservation Surgery for Breast Cancer in Men.

BACKGROUND: Male breast cancer (MBC) is a rare disease, accounting for 1% of all breast cancer diagnosed in the US. The rarity of MBC has limited the development of treatment algorithms specific to men. Therefore, the standard of care has been mastectomy. The safety and feasibility of breast-conserving surgery (BCS) in MBC are unclear. This study assessed whether overall survival (OS) outcomes, local recurrence (LR), and postoperative complications differed between patients with MBC who underwent conservative surgery or mastectomy. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective search for men aged 18 years or…

Carcinosarcoma of breast - A chimera among breast neoplasms.

Malignant phyllodes, along with ductal carcinoma, is known as metaplastic cancer of the breast. This tumor is additionally known as breast carcinosarcoma. Malignant phyllodes in conjunction with ductal carcinoma is a rare finding in routine clinical practice. We describe the case report of a 47-year-old female patient who arrived with a large right breast mass. A core biopsy was performed, and histopathological examination indicated that the tumor was a malignant phyllodes tumor. A positron emission tomography (PET) scan revealed hyper-metabolic and hypo-metabolic tumors with perilesional stra…
