The concept of clone-family testing is compared with existing progeny testing systems. The critical factors that will decide how cloning is utilized are the potential size of cloned families, and the cost per embryo (or per calf born). If family sizes of 100,000 become routinely achievable (cheaply), then clone testing becomes viable. A case of Encephalitozoon cuniculi infection in a rabbitry is reported. After the introduction of new rabbits in 1984, problems arose accompanied by serious losses among rabbits of all ages. Affected animals showed muscular weakness, emaciation, polydipsia and polyuria and died within various periods. Some of the affected animals also showed neurological symptoms. It is well established that the bull breeding soundness evaluation (BBSE) is an easily performed, relatively inexpensive, and extremely useful tool for the cow-calf operation. However, the BBSE can only achieve its full potential if it is performed properly by the practitioner in the field. A properly performed BBSE should include the use of the standards established by the Society for Theriogenology and a systematic protocol by the practitioner. This paper will review the Society for Theriogenology BBSE standards and the author's protocol.

Biotechnological techniques are extensively used in dairy breeding programs. Thus, artificial insemination and embryo transfer (and associated techniques) constitute an integral part of modern breeding programs. In pig breeding, embryo transfer is mostly restricted to special problem areas because of its high costs. Currently this technique is used for the exchange of genetic material on an international level, for the creation of specific pathogene free herds, and in connection with cryoconservation for the setup of embryobanks in the context of the preservation of genetic resources.

A breeding group of vervet monkeys produced 95 offspring over five years. Fetal wastage for 114 pregnancies was 16.7%. Uterine sizes were recorded for 103 pregnancies in various stages of gestation. This enabled diagnosis of pregnancy, estimation of stage of gestation, and prediction of parturition to within two weeks. Detailed observations were made on dental eruption, pelage development, and growth of 57 infants.

Ten animals from a reputedly trypanosensitive bovine breed, the Zebu, and ten from a reputedly trypanotolerant breed, the Baoulé, were exposed to natural trypanosome challenge in an area of high Glossina density.
