Inlay tympanoplasty: cartilage butterfly technique.

For closure of a nonmarginal tympanic membrane perforation, currently popular techniques utilize either an underlay or an onlay approach. However, both procedures require incising canal skin. A transcanal inlay procedure could provide theoretical advantages of ease, speed, and comfort. Specifically designed cartilage that could facilitate the transcanal approach similar to placement of a solid tube was employed and evaluated. A transcanal cartilage butterfly inlay technique was found to be efficient and effective to close a subgroup of small-to-medium-sized tympanic membrane perforations inclu

The butterfly and the serpent: culture, psychopathology and biomedicine.

Cultural explanations of psychopathology in the West have rarely employed models derived by anthropologists for small-scale non-literate communities. Some general features of those ritual patterns usually classed as 'culture-bound syndromes' are applicable to Western neurosis. Such reactions articulate both personal predicament and public concerns, usually core structural oppositions between age groups or the sexes. They gain their power by relying on certain unquestionable assumptions which, although beyond everyday jural relationships, articulate such relationships. In the case of Western re

Butterfly-Shaped Epicardial Lipoma of the Heart.

Cardiac tumors are a rare entity with typically unspecific symptoms. We present the case of a 43-year old female patient with epigastric pain and palpitations with a long history of diagnostics prior to discovery of an epicardial mass. The epicardial tumor with arterial vascularization from the left anterior descending artery was resected in a beating heart procedure and was found to be a lipomatous soft tissue tumor. A lack of mouse double minute 2 gene amplification in fluorescent in situ hybridization confirmed the diagnosis of a benign cardiac lipoma. Resection led to a long-term resolutio

Butterfly gliomas: a time for stratified management?

Butterfly glioblastomas (bGBM) are a rare subset of WHO grade IV tumours that carry a poor prognosis with a median survival ranging between 3.3 to 6 months. Given their poor prognosis, there is debate over whether histological diagnosis with a biopsy or any surgical or oncological intervention alters disease progression. With this in mind, we reviewed our experience as a high-volume unit to evaluate management decisions and outcomes. A retrospective analysis was undertaken (January 2009 to June 2021) of the electronic patient records of a large neurosurgical centre. We assessed patient demogra

Cadaveric Assessment of the Butterfly Graft in Rhinoplasty.

INTRODUCTION: The rhinoplasty butterfly graft is used to improve the internal nasal valve (INV), but post-operative visibility remains a concern. Intraoperative techniques have developed to thin the graft with unknown effect on functionality. OBJECTIVES: Improve understanding of how to modify the aesthetics of the butterfly graft without impacting patient outcomes. Determine how graft contouring affects its biomechanical properties. METHODS: Cadaveric cartilage grafts were used to examine the biomechanics in its native state and with progressive thinning. The force needed to stabilize the IN

Butterfly technique in mitral valve repair.

Degenerative mitral regurgitation due to posterior leaflet prolapse is often associated with tissue redundancy in the leaflet height and free margin of the prolapsing segment. The butterfly technique has been introduced for focal resection to precisely control the leaflet height without annular plication. This technique is indicated for a high prolapsing leaflet, greater than 20 mm. With intraoperative measurement of leaflet heights and ink dot marking as a depth indicator, the butterfly technique can be safely performed in most high posterior leaflet prolapse cases, without increasing the ris

Inlay butterfly miringoplasty. Our experience.

INTRODUCTION: Multiple surgical techniques have been proposed to close tympanic perforations. Eavey, two decades ago, described a technique aimed at closing central perforations in children. For this, he designed a butterfly-shaped cartilage graft that was placed between the tympanic membrane in an inlay manner. This technique showed great effectiveness for the closure of perforations as well as low morbidity, rapidity and great economic difference. METHODS: We performed a descriptive study of a series of cases analysing 32 interventions in children and adults with the modified Eavey techniqu

Child nutrition and growth: butterfly effects?

The international symposium organised by the Danone Institute as a pre-congress satellite of the European Nutrition Societies Congress, in Paris, in July 2007, brought together experts of child nutrition and behaviour. These experts coming from several countries of Europe and North America shared their views on the impact of numerous factors affecting child eating and health in present-day developed societies. Topics included nutritional influences during foetal life, early life development of food likes and dislikes, neophobia, ability for energy regulation, impact of media and advertisement,

Intraosseous access using butterfly needle.

Butterfly needle (18 G) was used for intraosseous administration of fluids and drugs in 22 children with shock. All except one patient could be stabilized successfully. Fifteen children had severe dehydration because of diarrhoea. The intraosseous route needs to be popularized as an option for rehydration in areas, where diarrhoeal dehydration continues to be an important cause of child mortality.

Of leaves and butterflies: how methotrexate came to be the savior of women.

A little more than half a century ago, young women were frequently dying of reproductive sequelae such as ectopic pregnancies and gestational trophoblastic disease. Mortality from these conditions was as high as 90% in the case of metastatic choriocarcinoma. If lives could be saved, it was in the operating theater and often at the expense of future reproductive potential. By the 1940s, however, targeted chemotherapy was starting to be explored, and the development of methotrexate for the treatment of childhood leukemia in 1949 eventually resulted in an unexpected, but nevertheless long and hap

Whole-Genome Analysis Reveals the Dynamic Evolution of Holocentric Chromosomes in Satyrine Butterflies.

Butterfly chromosomes are holocentric, i.e., lacking a localized centromere. Potentially, this can lead to rapid karyotypic evolution through chromosome fissions and fusions, since fragmented chromosomes retain kinetic activity, while fused chromosomes are not dicentric. However, the actual mechanisms of butterfly genome evolution are poorly understood. Here, we analyzed chromosome-scale genome assemblies to identify structural rearrangements between karyotypes of satyrine butterfly species. For the species pair Erebia ligea-Maniola jurtina, sharing the ancestral diploid karyotype 2n = 56 + ZW

Does skipping a meal matter to a butterfly's appearance? Effects of larval food stress on wing morphology and color in monarch butterflies.

In animals with complex life cycles, all resources needed to form adult tissues are procured at the larval stage. For butterflies, the proper development of wings involves synthesizing tissue during metamorphosis based on the raw materials obtained by larvae. Similarly, manufacture of pigment for wing scales also requires resources acquired by larvae. We conducted an experiment to test the effects of food deprivation in the larval stage on multiple measures of adult wing morphology and coloration of monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus), a species in which long-distance migration makes flight…

The Metamorphosis of NAR to CRNA: The Caterpillar to Butterfly Analogy.

The journey from nurse anesthesiology resident (NAR) to certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA) is a profound transformation, one that extends beyond skill acquisition to the evolution of professional identity. Using the metaphor of a caterpillar's metamorphosis into a butterfly, this article explores how academic rigor, clinical immersion, and mentorship shape resilience, adaptability, and confidence in future CRNAs. Grounded in growth mindset theory, it highlights how embracing challenges, seeking feedback, and reframing setbacks as opportunities for learning build both competence and

Second-chance speciation in the Clouded Apollo butterfly.

Contact zones, where genetic lineages meet, provide a unique opportunity to study speciation and reveal how reproductive barriers emerge.1,2,3 However, species ranges are dynamic, contact zones may be ephemeral,4,5 and reinforcement-selection against hybrids-is an elusive phenomenon.6,7,8 We use an integrative approach-genomic, chemical, and morphological data coupled with ecological and demographic modeling-to evaluate lineage limits, reconstruct contact history, and infer reproductive isolation strength and mechanisms in the protected Clouded Apollo butterfly (Parnassius mnemosyne) in Europe
