C-reactive protein levels following standard neurosurgical procedures.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the present study was to establish the magnitude and time-course of C-reactive protein increases following routine neurosurgical procedures in the absence of clinical and laboratory signs of infection. METHOD: C-reactive protein levels were studied daily following ventriculo-peritoneal shunt implantation, anterior cervical fusion, vestibular schwannoma operation, supratentorial glioma surgery, endovascular intracranial aneurysm treatment and open cerebral aneurysm surgery. FINDINGS: The magnitude of the C-reactive protein increase depended on the extent of surgical tra

C-reactive protein and fever in neutropenic patients.

The predictive value of daily C-reactive protein (CRP) monitoring to distinguish causes of fever in neutropenic patients was studied retrospectively. A total of 143 fever episodes during 113 consecutive hospitalizations were studied in 71 patients who had been referred for chemotherapy or haemopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). There were, on average, 1.3 fever episodes per hospital stay, attributed to: infection (55, 27 invasive bacterial, 5 fungal, 3 viral and 20 probable infections); acute graft vs host disease (GvHD) (20); drugs (22); transfusions (7); and not attributable (39). 130

Clinical applications of C-reactive protein in pediatrics.

The body of literature concerning studies of the applications of CRP measurement in the pediatric population continues to grow. Based on current data serial CRP measurements appear to be most useful for monitoring patient response to therapy after the primary diagnosis of invasive infectious or inflammatory diseases, for monitoring patients after major surgical procedures and those with serious burns. Monitoring CRP over time may be used to assess for recrudescent disease, a secondary process or ineffective therapy. In addition CRP appears to be suited to most applications for which the ESR is

[Significance of C-reactive protein in pediatric diagnosis].

The present review summarizes the results of C-reactive protein determinations in the serum of 9100 infants and children and gives a survey on data presented in the literature. Quantitative estimations of CRP are a useful screening method for the evaluation of infections and the activity of inflammatory processes in chronic diseases. In a variety of diseases CRP correlates well with erythrocyte sedimentation rate. CRP is, however, superior to ESR in showing faster dynamics and being uninfluenced by anemia, nephrotic syndrome or renal insufficiency. Marked elevations of CRP concentration may he

Exercise-induced compensation and C-reactive protein change in adults with elevated C-reactive protein: analysis of a randomised controlled trial.

PURPOSE: Exercise can reduce C-reactive protein (CRP), but heterogeneity exists and it is unclear whether exercise-induced weight compensation occurs or relates to CRP change. We examined whether compensation occurs in adults with elevated CRP during exercise and whether compensation and compensatory behaviours are associated with CRP change. METHODS: In this 4-month randomised controlled trial, 124 sedentary adults with elevated CRP (mean ± SD: 4.3 ± 2.5 mg/L) were randomised to a control group or a supervised aerobic exercise group expending 16 kcal/kg/week. Predicted weight change was esti

Serum protein profiles and C-reactive protein in natural canine filariasis.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Canine filariasis is caused by several species of filarial worms. The pathophysiological response to infection is mainly due to the filaria lifecycle. Laboratory detection methods to assess the pathological alterations characteristic of filariasis are needed urgently. Serum protein profiles and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels are used widely to diagnose several animal diseases. This study aimed to determine the serum protein profiles and CRP levels in dogs infected with Dirofilaria immitis or Brugia pahangi or both parasites. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Blood samples were colle

C-reactive protein: the nexus between inflammation and protein misfolding diseases.

C-reactive protein (CRP), an acute-phase protein primarily produced by hepatocytes in response to pro-inflammatory cytokines, is a widely used clinical marker for inflammation and tissue damage. In its native state, CRP exists in a stable pentameric form called pCRP. Upon interaction with activated cell membranes, pCRP undergoes a transitional conformation change into activated pCRP (pCRP*) and subsequently fully dissociates into its monomeric subunits (mCRP). pCRP* and mCRP interact with C1q and thereby activate the classical complement system pathway and both exert pro-inflammatory effects o

Serum amyloid protein SAA, C-reactive protein and lysozyme in leprosy.

Serum amyloid protein (SAA) appears to be the precursor of amyloid protein AA, the non-immunoglobulin fibril protein of secondary amyloidosis. Since amyloidosis is known to occur in high frequency associated with lepromatous leprosy (LL), we have examined the SAA levels in untreated LL patients and compared them to the levels observed in patients with tuberculoid leprosy (TT) and a large number observed in healthy controls. We found that SAA is markedly elevated in LL when compared to TT and controls. No clear correlation could be established with C-reactive protein, a well-documented acute ph

C-Reactive Protein-to-Albumin Ratio in Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Associations with Disease Activity and Comparison with C-Reactive Protein Alone.

Background/Objectives: The C-reactive protein-to-albumin ratio (CAR) is an emerging biomarker of disease activity in adult inflammatory bowel disease; pediatric data remain limited. We evaluated CAR in pediatric Crohn's disease (CD) versus ulcerative colitis (UC). Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 97 consecutive pediatric patients (79 CD, 18 UC) diagnosed at a single center between 2012 and 2023. Results: CAR was higher in CD (median 10.06) than UC (0.49; p < 0.001). In CD, CAR correlated with erythrocyte sedimentation rate, fecal calprotectin, and clinical and endoscopic disease activity (

C-reactive protein/albumin and C-reactive protein/fibrinogen ratios for the diagnosis of periprosthetic joint infection in revision total joint arthroplasty.

AIM: Testing for systemic inflammation markers is considered a simpler method for diagnosing periprosthetic joint infection (PJI). Changes in the C-reactive protein/albumin ratio (CRP/Alb ratio) and C-reactive protein/fibrinogen ratio (CRP/Fib ratio) are associated with PJI. This study aimed to evaluate the application of CRP/Alb and CRP/Fib ratios as novel inflammation-based markers for the diagnosis of PJI. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated 445 patients who underwent total hip and knee revision arthroplasties between January 2010 and February 2021. Of these, 129 patients were also indep

C-Reactive Protein, the Gliovascular Unit, and Alzheimer's Disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathogenesis is conditioned by the presence of amyloid beta (Aβ) and neuroinflammation. The gliovascular unit (GVU) illustrates the relationship between the vascular components of the brain and glial cells, particularly astrocytes, which are seen as critical elements mainly affected in this disease. In AD patients, the impairment of the GVU is seen as blood-brain barrier breakdown, decreased clearance of Aβ, and chronic inflammatory status. C-reactive protein (CRP) and its monomeric form (mCRP) are associated with endothelial dysfunction and amyloid plaque instability,

Monomeric C-reactive protein level is associated with osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic joint disease characterized by articular cartilage degeneration and secondary bone hyperplasia. C-reactive protein (CRP) is an acute-phase protein that is widely used as a marker of inflammation. Elevated plasma levels of CRP are commonly observed in patients with OA during the acute phase. Current evidence indicates that CRP dissociating into a monomeric form (mCRP) is the main functional conformation at inflammatory loci. However, it remains unclear whether mCRP is associated with OA and whether mCRP can be used as a biomarker for its pathogenesis. In the pre

C-reactive protein and affective inhibition in bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with bipolar disorder (BD) experience cognitive and affective processing deficits that often persist beyond the remission of acute mood symptoms. One possible biological mechanism for these deficits involves the potential effects of chronic low-grade peripheral inflammation on brain function. Peripheral inflammation has been associated with reduced executive functioning and memory performance, as well as altered reward processing in BD, but whether it is also implicated in cognitive-affective processing remains unknown. METHOD: Peripheral inflammation was measured by s
