In the last years considerable research and development activity have been expended to find new ceramic bone substitutes for the treatment of bone defects. However in many cases the drawback of synthethic bone substitutes are the slow graft incorporation and remodelling into the host bone. The purpose of this study was to analyze the kinetics of resorption and new bone formation of new calcium sulfate (CaSO4)/calcium phosphate (CaPO4) bioceramic engineered to enhance its bone forming properties. We prospectively evaluated the results of a series of 15 hips with osteonecrosis of the femoral hea…

Abnormalities in calcium concentration are frequent in patients receiving dialysis therapy. Most cases of both hypo- and hypercalcemia are mild and asymptomatic. There is concern, however, that, on the one hand, hypocalcemia can drive hyperparathyroidism and eventually lead to gland hypertrophy and autonomous function. Hypercalcemia, on the other hand, can be associated with increased extraosseous calcium and phosphate deposition leading to vascular calcification with an attendant mortality and morbidity. Calcium exists in three main forms in the blood: the physiologically active free or ioniz…

Cell biologists know the calcium ion best as a vital intracellular second messenger that governs countless cellular functions. However, the recent identification of cell-surface detectors for extracellular Ca(2+) has prompted consideration of whether Ca(2+) also functions as a signaling molecule in the extracellular milieu. The cast of Ca(2+) sensors includes the well-characterized extracellular-Ca(2+)-sensing receptor, a G-protein-coupled receptor originally isolated from the parathyroid gland. In addition, other receptors, channels and membrane proteins, such as gap junction hemichannels, me…

The skeleton contains over 200 bones, with the regulation of calcium being vital for maintaining this dynamic tissue. The calcium-sensing receptor (CASR) plays a pivotal role in the regulation of calcium both systemically through the parathyroid and locally in specific tissues. Recent studies have identified several sites of expression and further functions for the CASR gene, which include a role in the epidermis, tooth development and fluid regulation. In addition, genetic studies have identified gain-of-function mutations in the CASR gene, leading to a greater understanding of the pathogenes…

Apart from the eminent changes in the neurotransmitter systems of the central nervous system, a disturbance of the calcium ion concentration may be of significance in the pathophysiology of affective psychoses. The present paper deals with the contribution of calcium ions in the generation of affective psychoses and discusses the calcium antagonism as a new strategy in the treatment of the disease. The following topics will be described: 1. Disturbances of calcium metabolism in affective psychoses, 2. a comparison of lithium and carbamazepine effects, 3. clinical studies with organic calcium c…

The potential of short-cutting cycle, high temperature-dried alfalfa as a source of calcium for horses was determined by means of a 4 x 4 Latin square digestibility trial using four thoroughbred horses (mean liveweight 531 kg). The four dietary treatments were timothy hay alone, 33 per cent alfalfa and 67 per cent timothy hay, 67 per cent alfalfa and 33 per cent timothy hay, and alfalfa alone. Significantly more calcium and magnesium were absorbed from the alfalfa than from the hay. Phosphorus absorption appeared to be unaffected by treatment. Alfalfa calcium was more available than timothy ha…

Calcium ions (Ca2+) and Ca2+ channels are pivotal in the regulation of pain pathways and serve as key regulators of neuronal excitability and neurotransmitter release. We review the different types of Ca2+ channels involved in pain processing, including voltage-gated Ca2+ channels (VGCCs), such as L-, N-, P/Q-, and T-type channels. Each subtype is intricately involved in different aspects of pain perception, from acute pain signaling to the development and maintenance of chronic pain states. In addition, the roles of transient receptor potential (TRP) channels, particularly TRPV1 and TRPA1, ar…

Calcium-deprived rats have elevated intakes of CaCl2, other calcium salts, and some non-calcium compounds. We used taste reactivity to examine the effects of calcium deprivation on the palatability of CaCl2 and other solutions. Nine male Sprague-Dawley rats were calcium-deprived by maintenance on a low-calcium diet, and eight replete rats were used as controls. All rats were videotaped during intraoral infusion of the following solutions: 30 and 300 mM CaCl2, 30 mM calcium lactate, 100 and 600 mM NaCl, 30 mM MgCl2, 1 mM quinine.HCl, 2.5 mM sodium saccharin, and deionized water. We counted indi…

Calcium is one of the most important electrolytes in the body. Calcium regulation involves the intricate interaction between intracellular and extracellular levels with the free form of calcium determining function. The parathyroid gland is the principal regulator of ionized calcium in the serum. The kidney and gastrointestinal tract calcium receptors respond to the incorporation of calcium into the cytosol for muscle contraction, cell-cell communication, coagulation, and hormonal and neurotransmitter release functions. The regulation of calcium and the role of calcium antagonists are discusse…

To clarify the pathogenesis of calcium-containing urinary stone, calcium metabolism of the 113 patients with calcium-containing stone was studied by fasting and oral calcium loading test. The stone patients were classified into four groups. Those were normocalciuria (NC, n = 60), absorptive hypercalciuria-1 (AH-1, n = 26), absorptive hypercalciuria-2 (AH-2, n = 16) and renal hypercalciuria (RH, n = 11). In the AH-1 group, hypercalciuria resulted from enhancement of intestinal calcium (Ca) absorption. The increase in serum Ca from absorbed Ca increased renal filtered load of Ca. Urinary excreti…

Ginkgolide B (GB), a terpene lactone and active ingredient of Ginkgo biloba, shows protective effects in neuronal cells subjected to hypoxia … poxia in vivo revealed increases in spontaneous discharge frequency, action potential frequency and calcium current magnitude, and all these effects of hypoxia were suppressed by pre-treatment with 12 mg/kg GB. Western blot analysis demonstrated that hypoxia was associated with enhanced mRNA and protein expressions of Cav1.2 (a voltage-gated Ca2+ channel) …

Fortification helps provide adequate nutrients for individuals not meeting daily needs. Foods may be fortified with calcium to assist individuals with lactose intolerance and others preferring not to consume traditional forms of dairy. This study examined the quality of all-purpose wheat-flour tortillas fortified with calcium lactate, calcium carbonate, or calcium citrate. These tortillas were compared to similarly prepared nonfortified flour tortillas (control) and commercial nonfortified flour tortillas. Calcium-fortified tortillas contained 114 mg elemental calcium per standard serving (48 …

Luteinizing hormone (LH) regulates testosterone synthesis in Leydig cells by inducing an intracellular increase in cAMP concentration. LH also increases the intracellular calcium concentration ([Ca2+]i), dependent on the presence of Ca2+ in the extracellular medium ([Ca2+]e) for its effect. Despite these evidences, the identity of a pathway for calcium entry has remained elusive and the relationship between cAMP and [Ca2+]i has been questioned. Here we show that mice Leydig cells do have an inward Ca2+ current carried by T-type Ca2+ channels. In 10 mm [Ca2+]e, the currents start to be activate…

The kinetics of Ca2+ release from canine cerebellum and rabbit skeletal muscle microsomes, mediated by the inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (IP3) receptor (IRC) and the ryanodine receptor (RyRC), respectively, were analyzed by a model, which considers that Ca2+ release channels undergo spontaneous inactivation. We found that: (i) both the initial rate of release (Vo) and the rate of inactivation (Vi) were saturable functions of the activating ligand concentration (CL); and (ii) the ratio of Vi/Vo, termed the relative tendency for inactivation, decreased with increasing CL. Equilibrium [3H]-IP3 bin

Atropine, calcium, calcium-channel blockers, beta-adrenergic-receptor blockers, oxygen, morphine, vasodilators, and potent diuretics are frequently used in advanced cardiac life support (ACLS). Since the last AHA conference on ACLS standards, little controversy has arisen regarding the use of oxygen, morphine, vasodilators, or potent diuretics. In 1979, a full vagolytic dose of atropine was recommended for use early in the course of asystolic or bradycardiac arrest. Since then reports suggest that this higher dose of atropine may be of some limited value in treating this highly resistant form …
