We reported on three hypocalcemic patients with various serum creatine kinase (CK) levels and Ca metabolic disorders. Two patients with moderate hypocalcemia had increased CK levels (hyper-CK-emia), which normalized during treatment for the hypocalcemia; a negative correlation between the Ca and CK levels was observed in both patients. The remaining patient with mild hypocalcemia had a normal CK level. We discuss the effect of hypocalcemia on muscle in our patients as well as previously reported patients. Muscle may respond to hypocalcemia in three stages, namely homeostatic, asymptomatic hype

Selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) have the potential to provide the skeletal benefits of estrogen without the increased risk of uterine and breast cancer. Raloxifene, second generation SERM has been approved for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. Bazedoxifene (BZA, TSE-424Z), novel SERM, acts as a tissue selective estrogen antagonist or agonist. Bazedoxifene inhibited bone turnover and prevented bone loss caused estrogen deficiency. Furthermore, this SERM did not affect the uterine endometrial thickness and reduced serum cholesterol. These date suggest that Bazedoxifene

OBJECTIVES: Increased parathyroid hormone (PTH) production and related defects of calcium-phosphorus metabolism could persist even after successful kidney transplantation. Much more serious long term consequences after the transplantation are bone defects caused by immunosuppressive drugs. Many authors consider steroid therapy as one of the factors that maintain this process. Our study aimed to investigate calcium-phosphorus and bone pathological features during the various post transplantation periods, using non-invasive bone research methods (bone ultrasound structurally-densitometric analys

Cell composition of the parathyroid gland was studied under normal conditions, after the hypo- or hyperloading with calcium gluconate and at hyperfunction. Three types of parathyrocytes were established that probably reflect different stages of their life cycle: the first--poorly differentiated cell, the second--mature differentiated cell and the third--degenerated cell. The majority of cells were represented by the parathyrocytes of the 2nd type the varieties of which reflect a non-active (A-subtype) and active (B-subtype) phases of secretion. The number of A-cells is increased under the cond

Systematic study undertaken of 44 transplant patients with plasma creatinine below 0.11 mmol/L indicated renal phosphorus leak in approximately two-thirds of them and increased plasma PTH in all but one. Plasma 1,25(OH)2D was elevated in half the patients in whom it was measured. The lack of correlation found between plasma 1,25(OH)2D and plasma PTH or phosphorus probably indicates tubular lesions resulting in decreased production of 1,25(OH)2D. A phosphorus restriction test in 12 hypophosphatemic patients demonstrated that the reduced renal phosphorus reabsorption probably was due to both per

The extracellular calcium-sensing receptor (CaR), a G protein-coupled receptor that resides on the parathyroid cell surface negatively regulates secretion of parathyroid hormone (PTH). The CaR is functionally expressed in bone, kidney, and gut--the three major calcium-translocating organs involved in calcium homeostasis. Further studies are needed to define fully the homeostatic roles of the CaR in tissues that are involved in systemic extracellular calcium [Ca(2+)](o) homeostasis. The role of the CaR in regulating calcium metabolism has been greatly clarified by the identification and studies

Objective: The aim of the present study was to investigate whether there is an association between serum concentrations of calcium, phosphate, alkaline phosphatase, parathyroid hormone (PTH), and vitamin D and temporomandibular disorders (TMDs).Methods: In this case-control study, 51 patients with TMDs (28 patients with TMJ clicking, 5 patients with muscular disorders, and 18 osteoarthritis patients) and 29 healthy subjects within the age range of 20-50 years as the control group, were referred to the laboratory for calcium, phosphate, alkaline phosphatase, PTH, and vitamin D (25 OHD) analysis

OBJECTIVE: To review the components of calcium, phosphate and magnesium metabolism that are relevant to the critically ill patient, in a two-part presentation.
DATA SOURCES: A review of articles reported on calcium, phosphate and magnesium disorders in the critically ill patient.
SUMMARY OF REVIEW: Abnormal calcium metabolism in the critically ill patient often presents with an alteration in plasma ionised calcium. The characteristic clinical features of an acute reduction in ionised plasma calcium include tetany, laryngospasm, paraesthesia, confusion, hallucinations, seizures and, rarely, h

We have used an immunoradiometric assay (IRMA) to measure intact PTH. The serum-levels of PTH followed a log-normal distribution in a population of 85 healthy post-menopausal women, with a geometric mean of 1.9 pmol/l and a range of 0.8-6.1 pmol/l. The correlation between measurements performed using the IRMA and a radioimmunoassay which measured the C-terminal portion of the PTH molecule was 0.85. It was only the IRMA, however, that could measure subnormal values. Two of 27 patients with primary hyperparathyroidism had PTH-values in the upper reference interval. The rest of the patients had e
