In order to demonstrate the role of bone mineral density (BMD) measurement and bone scans in the management of patients with osteomalacia, radioisotope bone scintigraphy using technetium-99m methylene diphosphonate (MDP) and BMD measurements of the lumbar spine and femur by means of dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) were performed at the time of diagnosis and 6 months after therapy in 26 Saudi patients (17 females and nine males). Calcium absorption from salts and foods intrinsically labeled with 45Ca was determined in the rat model. Calcium bioavailability was nearly 10 times greater for low oxalate kale, CaCO3 and CaCl2 than from CaC2O4 (calcium oxalate) and spinach (high in oxalates). Extrinsic and intrinsic labeling techniques gave a similar assessment of calcium bioavailability from kale but not from spinach.

We have studied the Ca2+-accumulation activity of microsomal vesicles isolated from the liver of rats held for from 2 to 8 weeks on a copper-deficient diet. With this treatment that deeply modifies fatty acid composition, microsomal membranes show progressively lower Ca2+ sequestration. The effect of cyanide on release of catecholamines was evaluated in isolated bovine adrenal glands stimulated with 4 different agonists. Cyanide (0.1-1 mM) increased catecholamine release induced by barium or cadmium 2-3-fold. Acetylcholine or potassium induced secretion of adrenal catecholamines was also enhanced by cyanide, but only to the extent of 30-50%. These data suggest that cyanide acts by multiple mechanisms to enhance evoked catecholamine release. Two groups of weanling pigs, injected with 45Ca, were fed diets containing optimal calcium and phosphorus, and vitamin D3 at 1320 IU/kg feed in the control group, and 825,000 IU/kg feed in the test group.
