Evidence of canary droppings as an important reservoir of Cryptococcus neoformans.

After preliminary results had shown the occurrence of Cryptococcus neoformans in canary droppings in southern Italy, the increasing epidemiological interest in cryptococcosis and the habitats of the agent led to more extensive studies. 180 samples of canary droppings were collected from pet shops and private households in two towns (Messina and Reggio Calabria) of southern Italy and culturally examined for C. neoformans. The examination was carried out with the help of the brown colour effect (BCE) specific of the C. neoformans colony on Guizotia abyssinica creatinine agar (Staib agar). 48 sam

Detection and discrimination of simple and complex sounds by hearing-impaired Belgian Waterslager canaries.

Belgian Waterslager canaries (BWC) are bred to produce a distinctive low-pitched song with energy restricted to a lower range of frequencies than in other types of canaries. Previous studies have shown a high frequency hearing loss primarily above 2000 Hz that is related to hair cell abnormalities in BWC, but little is known about auditory perception in these birds. Here, frequency, duration, and intensity discrimination, temporal integration, gap detection, and discrimination of temporally reversed harmonic complexes in BWC were measured and compared to normal-hearing non-BWC. BWC had excelle…

Studies on the pathology of an avian trypanosome (T. bouffardi) infection in experimentally infected canaries.

Experimental infections of canaries with an avian trypanosome, Trypanosoma bouffardi, isolated from West Africa demonstrated that these infections can cause pathological changes in tissues. Enlargement of the spleen coincided with peak parasitaemia but no other gross changes were observed. Histopathological examination of infected and control birds revealed focal myocarditis and lymphoid hyperplasia, in infected birds, which are consistent with trypanosome infection. Avian trypanosome infections are not usually regarded as pathogenic but our results suggest that pathological changes occur whic…

Effect of antimicrobial treatment on the course of an experimental Yersinia pseudotuberculosis infection in canaries.

The efficacy of five antimicrobials administered via the drinking water was compared for the treatment of experimental Yersinia pseudotuberculosis infection in canaries. Groups of eight to 10 canaries were treated with ampicillin (2 g/1), doxycycline (500 mg/1), enrofloxacin (150 mg/1), chloramphenicol (1 g/1) or sulphamerazine-trimethoprim (1 g/1-200 mg/1) for 10 days, commencing 2 days after experimental infection. No clinical signs were observed in the group treated with enrofloxacin and there were no deaths and no isolations of Y. pseudotuberculosis from the spleen and liver at necropsy ca…

Diplopia after Sleeve Gastrectomy: The Canary in the Coal Mine.

Wernicke's encephalopathy (WE) is a neurologic emergency requiring timely intravenous thiamine supplementation to prevent permanent neurologic deficits. Historically, the WE diagnosis was limited to individuals with alcohol use disorder. However, it is now widely recognized to occur in patients who are chronically malnourished, post-bariatric surgery, pregnant with hyperemesis gravidarum, and with severe anorexia nervosa. Here we present a young woman who developed WE after undergoing a recent sleeve gastrectomy followed by protracted emesis for several days. This case underscores the importan

Toxicity Characterisation of Gambierdiscus Species from the Canary Islands.

In the last decade, several outbreaks of ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) have been reported in the Canary Islands (central northeast Atlantic Ocean), confirming ciguatera as an emerging alimentary risk in this region. Five Gambierdiscus species, G. australes, G. excentricus, G. silvae, G. carolinianus and G. caribaeus, have been detected in macrophytes from this area and are known to produce the ciguatoxins (CTXs) that cause CFP. A characterization of the toxicity of these species is the first step in identifying locations in the Canary Islands at risk of CFP. Therefore, in this study the toxic

Total dietary intake of mercury in the Canary Islands, Spain.

Estimating the risk associated with dietary intake of heavy metals by consumers is a vital and integral part of regulatory processes. The assessment of exposure to mercury shown in this paper has been performed by means of a study on the whole diet. Total mercury (Hg) levels were determined by cold vapour atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) in 420 samples of regularly consumed food and drink. The total Hg concentrations measured in the different groups of food ranged from non-detectable to 119 microg kg(-1) w/w. The fish group had the highest concentrations of total Hg. All groups of food wit

Circovirus inclusion bodies in intestinal muscle cells of a canary.

Multiple cytoplasmic inclusion bodies were observed in the intestinal smooth muscle cells of an adult canary from an aviary with a history of high mortality (50%) both in adult and young birds. Grossly, a mild enteritis was the only lesion appreciable. Smears of the proventricular contents contained a few megabacteria (Macrorhabdus ornithogaster). The intestinal inclusions were found in very high numbers in all parts of the tract examined. They appeared round to oval, amphophilic and hyaline in sections stained with haematoxylin and eosin, and magenta with Feulgen stain. Inclusions of the same

Seroprevalence of infection by Coxiella burnetii in Canary Islands (Spain).

THE AIMS OF OUR STUDY WERE: (i) to know the seroprevalence of Coxiella burnetii infection in the Canary Islands, (ii) to evaluate its epidemiologic features and (iii) to compare the rates of seroprevalence using two different cut-offs (1:20 and 1:80) for the diagnosis of past infection. METHODS: We analysed a representative sample of the canarian population. 662 sera were tested. For the detection of IgG and IgM antibodies against C. burnetii phase II antigens an immuofluorescence assay was used. The serologic screening for IgG detection begun with a 1:20 dilution. A titer of IgG > or = 1:80

Immunoglobulin E antibodies against budgerigar and canary feathers.

In 212 sera from budgerigar and canary fanciers with symptoms of rhinitis and/or bronchial asthma, IgE antibodies against budgerigar feathers (Budf) or canary feathers (Canf) were determined. In 25 of 98 Canf-specific IgE antibody measurements, and in 28 of 154 Budf-specific IgE antibody measurements, a significant (6% or more binding of 125I-anti-IgE) level of specific IgE was found. In 3 sera with the highest levels of Canf- or Budf-specific IgE, IgE antibodies against sera from both birds were present. It is concluded that IgE antibodies against canary and/or budgerigar feathers are present

Genomic characterization of the first oral avian papillomavirus in a colony of breeding canaries (Serinus canaria).

Papillomaviruses are non-enveloped, DNA viruses that infect skin and mucosa of a wide variety of vertebrates, causing neoplasias or simply persisting asymptomatically. Avian papillomaviruses, with six fully sequenced genomes, are the second most studied group after mammalian papillomaviruses. In this study, we describe the first oral avian papillomavirus, detected in the tongue of a dead Yorkshire canary (Serinus canaria) and in oral swabs of the same bird and other two live canaries from an aviary in Madrid, Spain. Its genome is 8,071 bp and presents the canonical papillomavirus architecture …

Evaluating the predictive value of doublecortin as a marker for adult neurogenesis in canaries (Serinus canaria).

Doublecortin (DCX) is an important microtubule-associated protein involved in the migration of young neurons into the cortical layers of the … investigated the relationship between DCX expression and neuron recruitment in the brains of adult canaries (Serinus canaria), a species well-known for its adult neurogenesis. We examined the age and functional state of DCX-labeled cells by using mitotic and neuron-specific markers, retrograde tracings, and immediate early gene colocalizations. Although D …

Vitamin A requirements of alipochromatic ('recessive-white') and coloured canaries (Serinus canaria) during the breeding season.

Six pairs of alipochromatic ('recessive-white') canaries (Serinus canaria) and six pairs of coloured canaries were kept through a complete breeding cycle while being fed a diet providing 12,000 iu vitamin A/kg. The eggs of three pairs (one recessive-white and two coloured) were all unfertilised and there were only 23 hatchlings (14 recessive-white and nine coloured), of which 14 (10 recessive-white and four coloured) were alive after the first moult. However, there was no clinical, biochemical or pathological evidence that the recessive-white canaries were suffering from vitamin A deficiency o…

Surveillance and control of Trypanosoma evansi in the canary Islands: A descriptive analysis.

This study examines the occurrence of Surra, a disease caused by Trypanosoma evansi, in camels in the Canary Islands. The 1997 detection of T. evansi in camels in the Canary Islands led to the implementation of an initial control program, resulting in a decrease in prevalence. Following an outbreak in 2014, and due to the impossibility of eradicating it using the conventional measures, a lazaret was set up to separate positive and suspicious animals, in addition to the control measures previously implemented. Stomoxys calcitrans was the only vector captured, and no other animals tested were fo

Effects of canary seed on two patients with disseminated granuloma annulare.

Treatment of disseminated granuloma annulare (GA) can be challenging and there is no gold standard for treatment. We observed two cases of generalized GA that were treated successfully with canary seed milk despite being resistant to other treatments. Canary seed milk has antioxidant (contains vitamin E), anti-diabetic (DPP-4 inhibition), and anti-hypertensive (ACE inhibition) properties. Therefore, dermatologists can consider canary seed milk, also known as alpiste milk, as a sole or supplemental treatment for patients with GA with or without comorbidities such as diabetes and hypertension, w

Monkeypox and HIV in the Canary Islands: A Different Pattern in a Mobile Population.

BACKGROUND: The clinical and epidemiological data of the recent outbreak of monkeypox (MPX) differ from previous reports. One difference is the epidemiological profile; the disease mainly affects a subgroup of MSM (men who have sex with men) with high-risk sexual behaviors, frequently persons living with human immunodeficiency virus (PLHIV). METHODS: In this observational analysis, all patients with PCR (polymerase chain reaction)-confirmed MPX attending an Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine Unit in Gran Canaria (Spain) between May and July 2022 were considered. RESULTS: In total, 42
