Immunostimulating and growth-promoting effects of sugar cane extract (SCE) in chickens.

Polymorphonuclear cells of the peripheral blood in the chicken significantly increased their phagocytosis when cultured with sugar cane extract (SCE; 250-1,000 microg/ml) for 24 hr. Chickens orally administered SCE (500 mg/kg/day) for 3 or 6 consecutive days at 1 week of age showed significantly higher body weight and gain in body weight/day and a lower food conversion ratio within the growing period of 6 weeks than physiological saline-administered control chickens. Furthermore, oral administration of SCE also resulted in significantly higher immune responses against sheep red blood cells and

Immediate effects and perceptions of cane use on mobility in individuals with Parkinson's disease.

PURPOSE: Assistive devices are prescribed to support mobility in individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD); however, their effects and users' perceptions remain poorly understood. This study investigated the immediate effects and perceptions of cane use in individuals with PD as a secondary analysis of the baseline cohort of an ongoing randomized clinical trial (NCT06950255). MATERIALS AND METHODS: After receiving a single-point cane and standardized instructions, participants' mobility was assessed under randomized conditions (with/without the cane) using the 10-Meter Walk Test and the Timed

Endoscopic management of candy cane syndrome with a lumen-apposing metal stent.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Candy cane (CC) or "hockey stick" syndrome is an adverse event of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) caused by an excessively long blind afferent limb distal to the gastrojejunostomy. This anatomical anomaly leads to symptoms such as pain, regurgitation, vomiting, and weight loss. Although surgical resection is the standard treatment, it is technically challenging and associated with significant risks. Alternative endoscopic approaches have been described in limited case reports. METHODS: We present a novel EUS-guided approach to managing CC syndrome. A 61-year-old man with

The caning of senator Charles Sumner: A review of his injuries and prolonged recovery.

Charles Sumner was an outspoken abolitionist and Republican United States Senator from Massachusetts from 1851 to 1874. In 1856, at the height of the national debate about slavery before the Civil War, Sumner was assaulted in the Senate chamber by a Democratic congressman from South Carolina. Preston Brooks attacked Sumner by striking him on the head and neck over 30 times using his walking cane as a weapon. After the attack, Sumner lost consciousness and was carried out of the Senate chamber. Though he recovered over the week following the attack, Sumner did not return full-time to his Senate

Lateralized motor behaviour in the righting responses of the cane toad (Rhinella marina).

This paper reports a series of tests for fore- and hind-limb preferences used by cane toads, Rhinella marina, to assist returning to the righted position after being overturned. We confirm the strong and significant right-handedness reported in this species, which under certain conditions exceeded 90% right-hand preference at the group level. Toads were tested under a variety of conditions including horizontal and inclined surfaces, with and without the opportunity for the forelimbs to grasp a support, in order to assess the effects of different vestibular and proprioceptive input on the stren

Disease Exposure and Antifungal Bacteria on Skin of Invasive Cane Toads, Australia.

Cane toads, an invasive species in Australia, are resistant to fungal pathogens affecting frogs worldwide (Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis). From toad skin swabs, we detected higher proportions of bacteria with antifungal properties in Queensland, where toad and pathogen distributions overlap, than in other sites. This finding suggests that site-specific pathogen pressures help shape skin microbial communities.

Ultrastructure of the Parotid Salivary Gland in the Greater Cane Rats (Thryonomys Swinderianus).

The parotid glands of adult male African greater cane rat (Thryonomys swinderianus) were examined by light microscopy (semi-thin sections) and transmission electron microscopy. Histologically, it consisted of acinar cells with vacuoles which corresponded to large oval electron-dense granules, intercalated, striated ducts, and myoepithelial cells which contacted the cells and intercalated ducts (IDs). The cytoplasmic organizations of acinar cells represented the features of serous secreting cells. Ultrastructurally, the acinar cells contained granules of low and moderately electron densities wi

From Wheelchair to Cane: Elective Transtibial Amputations in a Patient with Spina Bifida.

Spina bifida is associated with foot deformities, which may lead to foot ulcers, osteomyelitis, and limb amputation. Calcanectomy and Symes amputations have been reported successful in spina bifida. There is lack of evidence for transtibial amputations. This case describes a 27-yr-old woman with L4 level spina bifida who underwent bilateral transtibial amputations. She ambulated with bilateral ankle foot orthoses and canes until age 22. At age 22, she had bilateral foot reconstructive surgeries complicated by nonunion, ulcerations, and osteomyelitis. She was using a wheelchair by age 25. She h…

A detachable electronic device for use with a long white cane to assist with mobility.

Vision-impaired individuals often use a long white cane to assist them with gathering information about their surroundings. However, these aids are generally not used to detect obstacles above knee height. The purpose of this study is to determine whether a low-cost, custom-built electronic device clipped onto a traditional cane can provide adequate vibratory warning to the user of obstacles above knee height. Sixteen normally sighted blindfolded individuals participated in two mobility courses which they navigated using a normal white cane and a white cane with the electronic device attached.

The morphology and morphometry of the epididymis in the greater cane rat (Thryonomys swinderianus Temmincks).

The structure and morphometry of the epididymis in the greater cane rat were studied in this work. In assessing the morphology and characterising the morphometric values, a total of 15 adult male greater cane rats, bred and raised in captivity, were used. All the animals had brownish perineal staining, which was taken as index of sexual maturity in male cane rats, and they were maintained on elephant grass stems with water given ad libitum. From this work, the epididymis of the greater cane rat was observed to have a mean weight of 0.0365 ± 0.091 g, forming about 0.016% of the total body weigh

Tranquillization of cane rats (Thryonomys swinderianus) with a depot neuroleptic (pipothiazine palmitate).

Stress-induced self-trauma is a major cause of mortality among captive cane rats (Thryonomys swinderianus). Six subadult female cane rats were injected with a long-acting neuroleptic drug (pipothiazine palmitate 25 mg/kg), and an equal number were injected with isotonic saline. Their behaviour and reactions to stimuli were recorded daily. After 5 weeks, treated animals continued to display significantly less stress-related behaviour than the control group. In addition, two abbreviated studies were conducted. Eleven subadult males were treated identically to the females. Their behaviour was rec

Morbidity due to Schistosoma mansoni among sugar-cane cutters in Zimbabwe.

Quantitative determination of Schistosoma mansoni infection was carried out on 1995 cane cutters of the Hippo Valley and Triangle Sugar Estates. A total of 315 cutters were chosen for the study on the basis of S. mansoni infection and lack of anti-schistosomal chemotherapy during the previous three years. Stool consistency and blood and mucus in stool were determined for all the infected cutters. Overt and occult blood in stool was detected in a significantly high number of infected people compared to the control subjects (chi 2 p less than 0.001). However, the blood loss was found to have no

Efficient CRISPR-Cas9-Mediated Genome Editing of the Cane Toad (Rhinella marina).

Invasive species inflict major ecological, economic, and cultural harm worldwide, highlighting the urgent need for innovative control strategies. Genome editing offers exciting possibilities for targeted control methods for invasive species. Here, we demonstrate CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing in the cane toad (Rhinella marina), one of Australia's most notorious invasive species, by targeting the tyrosinase gene to produce albino phenotypes as visual markers for assessing editing efficiency. Microinjection of Cas9 protein and guide RNAs into one-cell zygotes resulted in 87.6% of mosaic larvae displ
