Fabry Disease is an X-linked lysosomal storage disorder leading to the accumulation of glycosphingolipids, mainly globotriaosylceramides in all tissues and solid organs of the body. The disease was described by Johannes Fabry and William Anderson coevally in 1898. Beside the involvement of the central nervous system, peripheral nerves, kidneys, skin and endovascular endothelium, the heart plays a major role in the disease. Left ventricular hypertrophy is one hallmark initially presenting with preserved ventricular function. However, with progression of the disease patients die due to heart fai

Alternative splicing (AS) is a fundamental RNA processing mechanism, which generates different RNA transcripts and consequently different protein isoforms from a single gene. This increases the diversity of proteins within an organism and can fine-tune biological processes. This review examines how cardiac-enriched RNA-binding proteins establish heart-specific splicing programs governing aspects of cardiac development, function, and disease. Developmentally, coordinated sarcomeric isoform switches underpin the foetal-to-adult transition and further isoform rewiring in ion channel and kinase ge

The analysis of court decisions on medical malpractice can provide a detailed picture of patient mortality and morbidity and the causes that led to medical malpractice. The purpose of our research is to analyze, through published court decisions, cases of alleged medical errors by cardiologists in Greece. This is a retrospective study. Court decisions on medical malpractice by specialists and residents in cardiology from 1990 to 2024 were searched in Greek legal banks. The causes of manslaughter and bodily harm by negligence and the criteria for attributing liability were recorded. Forty-six c

In the late autumn of 2019, a new potentially lethal human coronavirus designated severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) emerged in Wuhan, China. The pandemic spread of this zoonotic virus has created a global health emergency and an unprecedented socioeconomic crisis. The severity of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), the illness caused by SARS-CoV‑2, is highly variable. Most patients (~85%) develop no or mild symptoms, while others become seriously ill, some succumbing to disease-related complications. In this review, the SARS-CoV‑2 life cycle, its transmission and th

This study aimed to determine current practices regarding prophylaxis against infective endocarditis among pediatric cardiologists in the United States 5 years after publication of the most recent American Heart Association (AHA) recommendations. A descriptive, analytical, cross-sectional study was conducted from June 2012 to November 2012 in the format of an anonymous self-administered e-mailed questionnaire among pediatric cardiologists across the United States. The questionnaire inquired about demographic information of cardiologists and their current practices of prescribing preprocedure a

OBJECTIVES: To determine the sensitivity and specificity of the clinical assessment of murmurs in neonates, as performed by pediatric cardiologists, and to identify clinical features that predict the presence of congenital heart disease (CHD) in this population.
STUDY DESIGN: Neonates (n = 201) referred for outpatient evaluation of a heart murmur were enrolled consecutively. After a clinical evaluation, the cardiologist documented whether the murmur was "likely innocent" or "likely pathologic." The cardiologist repeated his/her assessment after an electrocardiogram. Echocardiography served as

Anderson-Fabry disease (AFD) is a lysosomal storage disorder characterized by glycolipid accumulation in cardiac cells, associated with a peculiar form of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). Up to 1% of patients with a diagnosis of HCM indeed have AFD. With the availability of targeted therapies for sarcomeric HCM and its genocopies, a timely differential diagnosis is essential. Specifically, the therapeutic landscape for AFD is rapidly evolving and offers increasingly effective, disease-modifying treatment options. However, diagnosing AFD may be difficult, particularly in the non-classic pheno

A young girl received a diagnosis of septic arthritis of the knee unresponsive to standard medical and surgical treatment. We report the patient's clinical journey with clinical commentary throughout, underlying the importance of differential diagnosis that may open several scenarios and a different final diagnosis accordingly. Finally, we will discuss the treatment and management of the patient's final diagnosis.

Increased life expectancy due to improved cancer prognosis, shared determinants (e.g., tobacco use), and cardiovascular toxicities related to cancer therapies, including the adverse cardiometabolic effects of androgen deprivation therapy for prostate cancer, make cardiovascular disease an frequent and important co-morbidity in patients with a genitourinary malignancy. Complex cardiovascular disease can pose significant challenges in the management of these patients given the uncertainties related to the best approach to reconcile ischemic and bleeding risks, and the role of invasive cardiovasc

This review discusses the rare but potentially life-threatening cardiovascular side-effects of myocarditis and dilated cardiomyopathy associated with the use of Clozapine. The clinical presentation of these conditions is non-specific, making it difficult to both risk-stratify and identify patients who develop these consequences. This review aims to examine the proposed aetiologies, diagnostic approaches and subsequent management strategies of cardiotoxicity associated with clozapine use; offering guidance to psychiatrists and general physicians. Current evidence highlights the importance of ac

Functional mitral regurgitation (FMR) is common in patients with heart failure and portends a poor prognosis. The etiology is secondary to nonischemic or ischemic (postmyocardial infarction) adverse remodeling. Treatment includes guideline-directed medical therapy, cardiac resynchronization therapy, and in some cases, surgical repair or replacement. Transcatheter mitral valve (MV) repair with the MitraClip device is approved in patients with degenerative MR and is currently under investigation for use in FMR, as are several transcatheter MV replacement devices. This review discusses the basis

Fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD) is an arteriopathy of unknown etiology which has traditionally been associated with secondary hypertension; however, it has garnered increased attention in the cardiology field in the recent years because of its potential association with spontaneous coronary artery dissection. Cardiologists should be aware that FMD is a polyvascular disease which can affect any arterial bed and can result in morbid conditions such as chronic headaches, pulsatile tinnitus, stroke from cervical artery dissection, and renal infarction from renal artery dissection and has also been a

Interactions between the heart and the kidneys are increasingly acknowledged among both cardiologists and nephrologists. The term cardiorenal syndrome now applies to the bidirectional nature of how disease in one organ system affects the function of the other organ system. Cardiovascular disease is a major threat to patients with chronic kidney disease, while renal dysfunction is prevalent in patients with cardiac disease and is a significant predictor of prognosis in cardiac patients. Still, renal patients with cardiac disease have largely been excluded from the clinical trials that have been

The pacemaker current contributes to endow some types of specialized cells (either cardiomyocytes, neurons, or smooth muscle cells) with an intrinsic rhythmic activity. In cardiac cells, this current has been named If for "funny current" by DiFrancesco, who first described it more than 20 years ago. The terminology points to the most peculiar If feature: pacemaker channels activate upon membrane hyperpolarization rather than depolarization, opposite to most voltage-gated channels. Recently, electrophysiological and molecular data demonstrated that f-channels are also present in ventricular car

Up to one fifth of patients with cardiovascular disease, including those who have experienced a myocardial infarction, may have concomitant major depression. Studies have suggested that the relative risk of major depression with cardiovascular disease ranges from 1.5 to 4.5. Further information is required to establish a dose-response relationship between depression and coronary artery disease (CAD); however, such a relationship has been shown between anxiety and CAD. Development of a conceptual model of the pathophysiologic actions of stress in CAD will assist in the understanding of this rel
