UNLABELLED: The purpose of this study was to investigate the incidence, outcome and prevention of thrombo-embolism in children with dilated cardiomyopathy. From 130 patients with dilated cardiomyopathy, 17 (14%) showed evidence of thrombo-embolism. Seven had initial cardiac thrombus, 7 exhibited initial embolus and in 3 thrombo-embolism was only diagnosed at autopsy. All 17 patients showed seriously impaired systolic function of the left ventricle with fractional shortening (FS) of 10 +/- 3%, range 5%-17%, as compared to those without thrombo-embolism with FS of 17% +/- 6%, range 5%-26% (P < 0

Thyrotoxicosis may precipitate atrial fibrillation, myocardial ischemia or heart failure if underlying heart disease is present. However, reversible dilated cardiomyopathy is rare. We report a case of a 51-year-old man with thyrotoxicosis and dilated cardiomyopathy that was reversed with antithyroid treatment.

Diagnostic criteria for dilated cardiomyopathy and those for its differential diagnosis with coronarogenic and non-coronarogenic (nonrheumatic myocarditis and other patterns of cardiomyopathy) as well as infiltrative myocardial lesions and some acquired and congenital heart diseases, pericarditis and cardiac tumors (myxomas) were presented. Emphasis was given to the analysis of the informative value of the current instrumental, mostly noninvasive, techniques.

The implication of virus infection in the pathogenesis of dilated cardiomyopathy has been strengthened by a number of studies demonstrating a progression from myocarditis to this condition. In this context a histological diagnosis from endomyocardial biopsy is mandatory. Serological studies have provided only circumstantial evidence. The development and clinical application of enterovirus group-specific hybridization probes and the polymerase chain reaction has allowed the detection of enteroviral RNA sequences in endomyocardial biopsy samples from patients in all stages of the disease. The pe

Previous studies have suggested that some cases of idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy (IDC) are due to persistent viral infection following an episode of viral myocarditis. Viral RNA sequences have recently been detected in material from patients with IDC using molecular biological techniques. We tested 40 samples from recipients' hearts explanted at cardiac transplantation for the presence of enteroviral RNA sequences, using a Northern blotting technique. Material from 19 cases of IDC and 21 cases of non-cardiomyopathic cardiac failure was examined together with Coxsackie-virus-infected neonat

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a leading cause of nonischemic heart failure. Genetic causes are identifiable in 25% to 30% of patients. This review describes the pathophysiology underlying genetic DCM, the genes most strongly associated with DCM, and both standard and novel therapies for treating genetic DCM.

BACKGROUND: Variants in the LMNA gene (which encodes intermediate filaments lamin A and lamin C) result in a variety of phenotypes that include overlapping features, such as progeroid syndromes, muscular dystrophies, peripheral neuropathies, lipodystrophies, and cardiac disease (including dilated cardiomyopathy and conduction disorders).
CASE SUMMARY: We describe a case of primary biventricular, nonischemic dilated cardiomyopathy and no myopathic symptoms with a homozygous LMNA c.991C>T (p.Arg331Trp) likely pathogenic variant. The patient, a 39-year-old woman, presented with symptoms of dilat

Dilated cardiomyopathy is defined by the presence of left ventricular dilatation and contractile dysfunction in the absence of abnormal loading conditions and severe coronary artery disease. Once dilated cardiomyopathy is discovered, a careful and detailed history with laboratory tests may reveal a potential toxic cause. In this article, we present the case of a patient with suspected toxic dilated cardiomyopathy, and then discuss the common causes and treatment of toxic dilated cardiomyopathy.

SARS-CoV-2 is an emerging cause of viral myocarditis that generates multiple complications, such as dilated cardiomyopathy. We describe a young, obese male patient with severe myocardial involvement by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, who presented with chest pain, elevated cardiac enzymes, non-specific electrocardiographic findings, echocardiogram with evidence of dilated heart disease with reduced ejection fraction, and subsequent verification using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The results of the cardiac MRI were typical of viral myocarditis. The patient did not respond to a short course of system

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Genetic studies have identified an increasing number of culprit disease genes in patients with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). While these studies were originally conducted in patients with primary DCM, recent research has identified culprit mutations among patients who develop DCM in response to an environmental exposure. This review will summarize the genetic architecture of DCM secondary to alcohol, anthracyclines, and pregnancy, as well as the potential modifying role of exercise.
RECENT FINDINGS: Mutations in DCM-associated genes are identified in 10-20% of patients cate

Cardiomyopathies represent a wide and heterogeneous group of diseases wherein a genetic cause has been consistently identified.Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is characterized by ventricular dilation and progressive systolic dysfunction, and it is the most common form of cardiomyopathy.Causative genetic mutations have been identified in more than 40 genes encoding proteins belonging to different cellular structures and pathways.A great diversity of pathways has been implied in the pathogenesis of DCM, depending on the affected genes and on the dislodged intracellular structures or mechanisms. This

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) represents a particular aetiology of systolic heart failure that frequently has a genetic background and usually affects young patients with few co-morbidities. The prognosis of DCM has improved substantially during the last decades due to more accurate aetiological characterization, the red-flag integrated approach to the disease, early diagnosis through systematic familial screening, and the concept of DCM as a dynamic disease requiring constant optimization of medical and non-pharmacological evidence-based treatments. However, some important issues in clinical m

Dilated cardiomyopathy is a rare cardiac disease characterized by left ventricular dilatation and systolic dysfunction leading to heart failure and sudden cardiac death. Currently, despite several conditions have been reported as aetiologies of the disease, a large number of cases remain classified as idiopathic. Recent studies determine that nearly 60% of cases are inherited, therefore due to a genetic cause. Progressive technological advances in genetic analysis have identified over 60 genes associated with this entity, being TTN the main gene, so far. All these genes encode a wide variety o
